The Wave of '90s Anime Being Revisited Today

[ad_top1 class="mb40"]
Tsubasa-RESERVoir-CHRoNiCLE DVD Remakes and continuations of old shows are not unheard of in the anime industry. Try mentioning Shigeru Mizuki's manga GeGeGe no Kitarou in a room full of old-school manga lovers; you'll probably get as many reactions as there are anime adaptations. Mizuki's manga from the '60s was adapted for animation in 1968, 1971, 1985, 1996, and 2007 – and that doesn't include the various films based on those different adaptations, as well as adaptations in other media. [ad_top2 class="mt40"] Of course, there have been many other titles that have continually resurfaced over time, such as Cyborg 009 – which has seen remakes in addition to continuations set in the same canon as earlier adaptations. In some ways, remaking and revisiting older anime titles are two methods through which to reach new audiences via previously established works, and they're not uncommon practices in the anime industry. So it shouldn't come as a surprise that many anime titles from the 1990s are being remade or continued nowadays, but at the same time, the '90s are just...well, different. gegege_no_kitarou_01gegege_no_kitarou_02

"GeGeGe no Kitarou" Then and Now

It's hard to say exactly when the '90s returned in the anime world, likely because it happened so soon after the '90s ended. If I had to mark a specific turning point that led to this wave of familiar faces, I would isolate the CLAMP series Tsubasa: Reservoir Chronicle and its sister series xxxHolic as forerunners. In their desire to connect their various titles in a crossover epic, CLAMP reintroduced fan-favorite leads from Cardcaptor Sakura and many other titles from their body of work. Knowing that the world of Cardcaptor Sakura plays a role in the rest of CLAMP's works and seeing the return of characters like Sakura – even alternate versions of her – sparked a fire in the anime community: we were thirsty for the '90s again. tsubasa_Reservoir_Chronicle_01 If you're only interested in full-blown series remakes of old favorites, then rest assured that the '90s are indeed coming back. Take Sailor Moon Crystal, which was announced back in 2012 and finally started airing last summer. The online series acts as the Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood to Fullmetal Alchemist, which basically means that it's a second anime that's closer to the original manga. Some fans, of course, are disappointed that Sailor Moon Crystal isn't continuing from where the first anime left off. If that's what you're looking for, then perhaps the upcoming Digimon Adventure tri. is more your style. Although we still don't know many details, the upcoming sequel to Digimon Adventure promises the return of many fan-favorite characters later this spring. Meanwhile, the famous anime Dragon Ball Z hasn't been remade, but a new short special was announced back in 2008. A year later, Dragon Ball Kai – the revised version of Dragon Ball Z – was announced as part of the show's 20th anniversary celebration. Now in 2015, we've had various OVAs released alongside video games in addition to a new feature film (and a new one still to come). Speaking of new feature films: the Rebuild of Evangelion series, announced in the mid-2000s, aims to retell the highly regarded Neon Genesis Evangelion TV series across four films, and we're still waiting for information on the final movie. Even Yu-Gi-Oh! is slated to have its own anniversary feature film featuring the return of beloved characters from the first series.

Why the 1990s?

But what – if anything – makes these shows from the '90s so different? The unfortunate answer is that there's nothing different or special about the shows themselves (though certain '90s shows like Sailor Moon and Evangelion established tropes that would define genres for years to come). There have been excellent anime titles from both before and after the '90s, and no one can make the argument that every '90s anime was amazing. Simply put, the '90s benefited from timing. Although it was exported before then, it was during the 1990s that anime really took off in the western world – primarily in places like the United States, Canada, and Latin American countries, but the diaspora of anime also included Australia, the U.K., European countries, and other locations. As technology grew, so did anime distribution, culminating in the simulcast world we live in today. And that world finds its roots in the '90s. sailor-moon For many of us anime fans currently in our 20s, our first exposure to anime can probably be traced back to Dragon Ball Z or Sailor Moon. These shows paved the way for anime-centric children's programming blocks like those found on Fox Kids and Toonami. The "monster" craze – Pokémon, Digimon, and arguably Monster Rancher – seized control of the Saturday morning runs, while shows like Gundam Wing, Tenchi Muyo!, and Cowboy Bebop aired in primetime. Keep in mind that these examples are only a small sample of the many '90s shows that influenced an entire generation of anime fans. Eventually, thanks to the positive reception and high merchandise sales of those shows, titles including InuYasha, FLCL, and Fullmetal Alchemist started airing in the mid-2000s, and the anime craze hasn't died down since. The craze started, however, with a select few programs in the 1990s, and it's no surprise that these influential titles are the ones that are resurfacing today for the modern anime audience.

The Role of Nostalgia

What it boils down to is nostalgia. The 1990s have become "vintage" in the eyes of many; combine that with the modern trend of integrating nerd culture into mainstream pop culture (essentially, geek is chic) and you'll see that the vintage shows from our youth have taken on a renewed significance. Additionally, anime has become slightly cheaper to produce thanks to changes in the way anime is drawn (purely digital methods as opposed to strictly hand-drawn techniques), and coincidentally, many people who grew up watching anime in the 1990s are now young adults who are possibly willing to pay for the absurd amount of merchandise that anime usually entails. It's possible that animation studios are merely pandering to the nostalgia of old fans for a quick buck, but I think the reason is a bit deeper. Evangelion People are nostalgic for these old shows for a reason, and it's possible that it's because anime was simply better back then. It's an old adage that people will always reminisce about the "good old days" in any context, but speaking from my own experiences, something definitely changed from the mid-to-late 1990s through the early 2000s. Although there were many titles I enjoyed from that era – and many modern titles that I enjoy – I could detect a shift in quality, a change in storytelling and animation styles that signified a new direction. And I simply preferred what came before. It would seem, then, that many other people feel similarly. Anime fans are fed up with the status quo, and the complaints are everywhere: everything is too moe, too shounen, too shoujo, too filled with unnecessary violence carried out by some standard pink-haired girl with an enormous gun. In many ways, we want a return to form, which includes anatomy and character design. It's very surreal seeing '90s-style character designs rendered with all of the bells and whistles of today's animation techniques – the Rebuild of Evangelion film series is particularly good at taking familiar designs and style choices and blending them with fantastic digital imagery. The familiar and the modern simply look amazing together on the screen.
The current wave of '90s anime being revisited in the modern era isn't slowing down. Anime fans have a number of different titles – both shows and films alike – to look forward to. But what's next? There are rumors that Cardcaptor Sakura might be remade someday soon, and its current merchandising campaign isn't doing anything to quell that rumor, but like Revolutionary Girl Utena, I don't think that Cardcaptor Sakura needs a remake; rather, I hope we'll see a revised adaptation of The Vision of Escaflowne, but that might be a bit too much to hope for. It will be interesting to see, ten years from now, if there will be nostalgia for anime from the early 2000s. Until then, I will enjoy every second of my childhood's ubiquitous resurrection. [sourceLink url="http://www.pixiv.net/member_illust.php?mode=medium&illust_id=44834670" a_text="Usagi Tsukino Fan Art"]

Who didn't wish to switch lives with their favorite anime heroine at least once in their lifetime? Having superpowers or being constantly surrounded by good-looking boys - daily life in anime just seems much more exciting than reality. Well, you are not alone with this wish. We have put together a list of our personal heroines that we would like to switch lives with for a day. Enjoy!

[ad_top2 class="mt40"]

10.Usagi Tsukino from Sailor Moon

[imageCharacterWithAnime character='Sailor Moon Usagi Tsukino' anime='sailormoon-dvd']

Let's be honest, which little girl didn't want to be Sailor Moon once she grew up. The story around teenage girl Tsukino who can transform into Sailor Moon in order to fight crime together with her friends has captured the hearts of girls all over the world. Sailor Moon's life is filled with adventures and unusual encounters. She lives a life divided into being a normal high school student during the day and fighting evil at night. Being part of a group called the Sailor Soldiers is another major plus in my eyes. And who didn't have a crush on Tuxedo Mask?

9. Hikari Hanazono from Special A

[imageCharacterWithAnime character='Special A Hikari Hanazono' anime='specialA DVD']

Next, I present to you Hikari Hanazono from the romance comedy anime Special A. It shows the life of Hikari, a top student at Hakusenkan. Even though she always gives 110% both in her studies and her private life, she still comes second to her personal rival, Kei Takashima. Little does she know that Kei actually holds feelings for her. Living as Hikari for a day, I would finally know how it feels like to be one of the top students of my class. Hikari is a girl committed to her studies and you cannot help but root for her in her competitions against Kei. The friends at her side are truly unique as well. Having a life filled with competition, passion and motivation certainly sounds like fun.

8. Amu Hinamori from Shugo Chara

[imageCharacterWithAnime character='shugo-chara-amu-hinamori' anime='shugo chara DVD']

This girl is one of my personal favorites: Amu from the Shugo Chara series. The idea of the anime is similar to Sailor Moon; heroine Amu gets her own Shugo Charas that help her transform into different characters. With this new power she fights against evil in order to protect the unborn dreams of children. Again, we have a strong heroine with pretty amazing superpowers. The different costumes might look a little bit cheesy or over the top at first, but you will get used to them. Most importantly, her life is more adventurous and fascinating than the ones of normal teenagers and I wouldn't mind taking her place for a day.

7. Lydia Carlton from Earl and Fairy

[imageCharacterWithAnime character='Earl and Fairy Lydia Carlton' anime='Earl and Fairy DVD']

Lydia Carlton lives in a world where humans and fairies coexist. As one of the last fairy doctors she acts as a bridge between the two worlds. Yet, it is not until the mysterious Edgar appears and takes her on an adventure that her life gets turned upside down. Personally, I envy her most for the world she lives in. She's surrounded by fairies, kelpies and other mythical creatures. I cannot help myself but be reminded of the fairytales of my childhood. Being able to live alongside fairies and talking cats - being Lydia Carlton for a day surely sounds exciting.

6. Kyouko Mogami from Skip Beat!

[imageCharacterWithAnime character=' Skip Beat! Kyouko Mogami' anime='skip beat DVD']

Skip Beat! is one of those anime that entertain you from beginning until the end even if you're not especially interested in the topic itself. Kyouko Mogami is a happy-go-lucky girl that will make you smile in each and every episode with her struggles to fulfill her new dream of becoming an actress. The most admirable characteristic of Kyouko is her strength. Of course, she had to face hardships in her life, but in the end everything turns out better than expected. I cannot help it but envy her for finding something that she feels passionate about.

5. Haruka Nanami from Uta no Prince-sama

[imageCharacterWithAnime character='Uta no Prince-sama Haruka Nanami' anime='uta-no-prince-sama-DVD']

The music fans of you should already be familiar with Uta no Prince-sama. The story revolves around heroine Haruka Nanami who enrolls in Saotome Academy, a school for composers and future idols. Haruka strives to become a composer herself and while doing so starts working together with a group of guys trying to become superstars. Why I'd want to be Haruka? One just has to look at the faces of the guys around her to get the answer. Haruka is a sweet and innocent girl so of course she doesn't realize it, but she's surrounded by gorgeous-looking superstars. Moreover, she gets to attend a school especially designed for studying music. I don't know about you but at least I wouldn't mind going there instead of a normal high school.

4.Haruhi Fujioka from Ouran High School Host Club

[imageCharacterWithAnime character='HaruOuran High School Host Club hi Fujioka' anime='Ouran High School-DVD']

Speaking of schools I'd like to attend, next up is Haruhi Fujioka from Ouran High School Host Club. The heroine of this anime has to join the student's Host Club at the Ouran High School in order to repay for a valuable vase she broke by accident. I'm sure that a lot of you out there fantasize about being the center of a Reverse Harem anime. For me, this was definitely the case while watching Ouran High School Host Club. The guys of this constellation are interesting characters and great friends. Unlike some other anime, none of the boys are threatening or dangerous. Their feelings for Haruhi are pure and sincere and every girl can dream to find guys like that.

3. Tsukushi Makino from Hana Yori Dango

[imageCharacterWithAnime character='Hana Yori Dango Tsukushi Makino' anime='hanayori dango DVD']

Next up is an anime that might be too old for some of you, but is one of the classics of Shoujo anime. The story of Tsukushi Makino is most likely better known through the various adaptations into Asian drama series. Coming from a poor family, Tsukushi is glad to be accepted into Eitoku Academy, a school usually reserved for the rich and famous. Her life would be simple if it weren't for the Flower Four (or F4 for short), a group of boys that run the school. As accepted from a Shoujo and romance anime, feelings start developing between the guys and Tsukushi. Suddenly she's pushed into the world of the rich and famous. Being able to choose between two equally rich yet sincere men is something that I'd be ready to experience any day.

2. Nanami Momozono from Kamisama Hajimemashita

[imageCharacterWithAnime character='Kamisama Hajimemashita Nanami Momozono' anime='kamisama-hajimemashita-DVD']

Nanami finds herself at a low point of her life: Her father runs away from his gambling debts and she is left behind without a family or house to return to. Rescue comes in the form of Mikage who offers her to live at his home. Little does she know that his home is in fact the local shrine and that she just agreed to be its next residing god. Not only does Nanami have good-looking Tomoe by her side, but she also gets turned into a goddess. What I think is truly admirable is the fact that this doesn't grant Nanami any superpowers. Instead, she manages to resolve issues with her own strength and tackles one problem after the other with her cheerful attitude.

1. Misaki Ayuzawa from Kaichou wa Maid-sama

[imageCharacterWithAnime character='Kaichou wa Maid-sama Misaki Ayuzawa' anime='kaichou ha maid sama DVD']

Misaki Ayuzawa is one of the first girls being admitted into Seika High, a former all-boys school. In order to survive in this environment, she had to create the appearance of a tough and boy-hating student. But she has a well-kept secret: In her free time she works at a Maid Café and thus has to serve mostly male customers in a Maid costume. Explaining why most of us would want to be Misaki for one day is easy: Takumi Usui. Those shiny eyes, his smile, his honesty - who wouldn't want to be next to him even if it was only for a day. Even though Misaki is able to fight for herself she still has someone like Usui to look out for her. Besides, Misaki's life never gets boring and at least I wouldn't mind getting into troubles with Usui by my side.

As Sailor Moon established an international identity for Japanese animation during the prime of its broadcast in the mid-1990s, many “clones” using magical schoolgirls boomed in its native Japan. Despite the name changes in the English version, a number of fans such as myself still felt that its original Japanese identity still resonated. In addition to mentioning the series still takes place in Tokyo, Rei (or Raye) was our introduction to Shinto and the miko, or shrine maiden, Japanese school uniforms (the sailor for girls and gakuran for boys), and Tokyo Tower. It taught us many of anime’s tropes such as the sweat drop to indicate stupidity and nervousness and much more. Though most of the “clones” did not have the same worldwide success, each found its own respective niche audiences and offers its own distinguishing qualities to give viewers more about Japanese schoolgirl life. While Sailor Moon used outer space mythology and a super hero version to the then more traditional sailor schoolgirl uniform, other magical girl/shojo shows used other gimmicks to trail off the popularity of Sailor Moon and still be distinct.

1. Cardcaptor Sakura (Cardcaptors)

cardcapter sakura dvd
[Information episodes=" 70 " aired=" April 1998 – March 2000 "]

After releasing the Clow Cards from its original sealed book, ten-year-old Kinomoto Sakura takes the responsibility of resealing the cards by learning the appropriate skills necessary to do so under the guidance of Cerberus(Kero), the guardian of the Clow Cards. Helping her is Li Shaoran, a boy from Hong Kong who wants the cards and has an initial rocky relationship with Sakura, and Tomoyo, her best friend/cousin/gadget supplier/costume designer/documenter. Since the series came out after the end of “Sailor Moon,” its expectations of being a knock off as opposed to other shojo series that came out in the mid-90s were much more relaxed. Sakura does not do transformations and she wears a different costume for each fight all made by Tomoyo. However, it shares themes about love and friendship through both its main and secondary cast. Plus, the relation between Li and Sakura is naturally an elementary version of Usagi and Mamoru in which it starts off as uneasy, but are there for each other when it counts, and eventually profess their love. The first theme song “Catch You, Catch Me” has a pretty catchy hook and suits the atmosphere of the series accurately well. The best addition for Sailor Moon fans is the voice of Sailor Mercury, Hisakawa Aya, as the voice of Kero-chan, who plays the “Luna” role.

2. Wedding Peach

wedding peach dvd
[Information episodes=" 51 " aired="April 1995 – March 1996 "]

The trio of Momoko, Yuri and Hinagiku are normal junior high girls hoping to get their hands on the captain of the soccer team and enjoy a normal teenage life. However, fate and an inter-dimensional threat from the Devil World invade earth and want to spread hate. From the Angel World, a pretty man named Liome chooses the schoolgirls as the Love Angels. Momoko is the titled Wedding Peach, Yuri is Wedding Lily, and Hinagiku is Wedding Daisy, all direct translations of their names. Together they erase the hate and spread the love. Tadano Kazuko, one of the designers from “Sailor Moon” designed the characters of “Wedding Peach”. The shape of the faces, eyes and the marks beneath the eyes, should be a strong indicator of these notable similarities. Like Usagi, Momoko can get aggressive when teased and both of their fathers are photojournalists. The progression and origin of the Love Angels are almost the same as the Sailor Guardians and its general episode formula will be familiar to “Sailor Moon” viewers. Though the main cast is introduced from the very start, each girl becomes a Love Angel in a one by one pace but a little faster with a twist which you have to see for yourself. One of the best additions is Kotono Mitsuishi, Sailor Moon’s voice actress playing a villainous role. If you are a seiyuu or a Japanese voice actor buff such as myself, this will make the series enjoyable because they all give great performances to their characters.

3. Magic Knight Rayearth

Magic Knight Rayearth dvd
[Information episodes=" 49 " aired=" October 1994 – November 1995"]

Hikaru, Umi and Fuu (names representing their magical abilities) all go to Tokyo Tower with their schools on a field trip and are suddenly summoned by Princess Emeraude to the distant world of Cephiro to save it. With no other way of returning home, the three young ladies become the Magic Knights and are given armor, weapons and elemental magical abilities to combat the evil forces of Zagato. Viewers could be familiar with Tokyo Tower as it was also used in a good number of “Sailor Moon” episodes (in addition to other works by the creators of “Magic Knight Rayearth,” CLAMP). As in “Sailor Moon” when the Sailor Guardians first became a team, the Magic Knights were not familiar with each other but had to work together for the greater good. Each character has the personalities of being tomboyish, elegant, and shy. I cannot deny it is rather cliché but they perfectly balance each other out for the story as well as work as each other’s equal foil and support. As opposed to sailor school uniforms, the Magic Knights wear the blazer-style uniform and is also part of their identity and armor for a certain period. It is fun and touching to see how far the relationships between the three girls blossom by the end of season 1. In terms of the power ups, I am sure viewers (and possibly old school RPG fans) can appreciate the pace and feel. I also strongly recommend it for its very spirited soundtrack and CLAMP’s older character design style before “Code Geass.”

4. Nurse Angel Ririka SOS

Nurse Angel Ririka SOS dvd
[Information episodes=" 35 " aired="July 1995 – March 1996 "]

On Moriya Ririka’s tenth birthday, Kanou, the new handsome boy at school, gives her a present and has earned the jealous rage of all the girls. But before she can further celebrate, the earth is being invaded by the forces of Dark Joker. Kanou then instructs Ririka to use her gift, the Angel Cap, to turn into Nurse Angel and “cure” (as in defeat) her foes while trying to keep her identity secret from her classmates, family and her best friend, Seiya. Let's start off by mentioning that some of the catch phrases of representing “love and justice” should instantly be familiar. In addition, it has very over the top attack names such as “Angel Aide Bomb Beam” and is also abusive in the recycled animation department with glitter nude transformations and delivering the final attack. Despite that, the story has a very unique direction as it progresses and it is really fun to see a certain character have more use and development which you have to see to believe. I think the series wanted to have something of an environmental theme like “Captain Planet” but not as directly educational about the issue. The ending theme is very cute and catchy and a must listen. Last, Akimoto Yasushi, one of the co-creators of this series would go onto establishing Japan’s biggest idol group of the 2010s, AKB48.

5. Akazukin Chacha (Little Red Riding Hood Chacha)

akazukin cha cha dvd
[Information episodes=" 74" aired=" January 1994 – June 1995 "]

When you take a mix of Japanese and western fairy tales and making magic school cool before “Harry Potter,” you get “Akazukin Chacha.” Despite her appearance being based on Little Red Riding Hood, Chacha was raised by Seravi (who actually has a funny but cool back story) to become a witch. Despite living peacefully in the countryside, the kingdom is ruled by the evil king, Daimaoh. Serevi then gives Chacha and her friends Riiya and Shiine amulets that represent love, courage and hope to turn her into the magical princess to reclaim the kingdom. Once again, we have a main character who is somewhat of a klutz but not in the same way as Usagi. Chacha’s clumsiness comes from word plays that make sense in Japanese when attempting magic spells. For example, when she tries to summon clouds by the word “kumo,” she summons spiders which is also “kumo” in Japanese. Or whe she wants to summon “hana,” or “flowers,” she summons noses which is also “hana” in Japanese. Both series’ share very similar plot twists with the main characters and tell stories of hope and friendship, but presented in its own unique manner fresh to its audiences. A must see for those who love fairy tales.

6. Fushigi Yuugi (The Mysterious Play)

fushigi yuugi dvd
[Information episodes=" 52 " aired=" April 1995 – March 1996"]

“Fushigi Yuugi,” or “The Mysterious Play,” tells the story of Yuuki Miaka and Hongo Yui. During a visit to the library, Miaka and Yui find a magical book and are transported into its story of ancient China. Miaka and Yui once best of friends, become bitter enemies as they become priestesses to separate kingdoms they represent. Between both sides, they are aided by seven warriors marked by kanji characters on their bodies in order to summon the God of their kingdoms and have any wish granted to them. Like Usagi, Miaka is an underachieving and klutzy junior high girl. She just wants to be a normal girl but destiny has led her to do something bigger. She also instantly falls in love with her savior, Tamahome, the anime heartthrob of the 1990s. The love story between Miaka and Tamahome is a driving force of the series as well as Miaka’s relationships with her new friends. Each character offers something distinct and the series will make you care about them and ultimately, make you cry. Plus, Kae Araki, the voice actress of Miaka, also played Sailor Chibi Moon and briefly played Sailor Moon during the finale of season 1 while Kotono Mitsuishi was sick. The first episode even pays homage to her catch phrase of “In the name of the moon (but instead the sun), I will punish you.” Another big name from “Sailor Moon” is probably one of the best male seiyuus of all time, Midorikawa Hikaru as the voice of Tamahome. He played Ali in the first story arc of “Sailor Moon R” and was also Fiore in the movie. If you’re more of a dub person, then you will get a kick out of David Hayter, the voice of Solid Snake himself as the voice of Tamahome.

sailor moon wallpapaer3

Most readers familiar with these titles can agree without dispute that on a foundational definition, they all took influence from “Sailor Moon” though viewers can understandably conclude them as “rip-offs” but all deserve a chance. Of course the differences go beyond just the gimmicks. I believe as long as a series develops its characters and stories to excellent and unpredictable directions (as “Nurse Angel Ririka SOS” and “Magic Knight Rayearth” do a great job of in my personal opinion) and presents its themes and morals in a relatable manner (despite sharing all of them), there is plenty of room to give them a try and enjoy them. “Fushigi Yuugi” and “Cardcaptor Sakura” were great pieces of character and relationship exploration which made viewers care about them. “Akazukin Chacha” has its humor based around Japanese words that sound the same but mean something different. Then finally, add in recycled animations of transformations and finishing attacks for almost every episode into this list and you got the best similarity ever (though “Saint Seiya” and “Hokuto no Ken” were abusive of this long before these other listed titles premiered but that is another topic for another time). Now with the new “Crystal” series on the net, will this inspire more studios to take this route to achieve international success? Only inside the fan reactions we will get the message.

lovely complex dvd

Love Com, or simply known as Lovely Complex, explores the turbulent roller coaster of teenage romance with the same silly slapstick humor that fans of romantic comedy anime will immediately be familiar with. While at times tearfully dramatic, a big selling point of Love Com is the hilarity that ensues between the comedic protagonists, Risa Koizumi and Atsushi Otani who both have serious height complexes that interferes with their confidence finding love. But despite this disparity and the almost amusingly constant exchange of personal insults, Risa finds herself falling for the incredibly dense Otani. Soon, drama and even more comedy unfolds as the series progresses, making for a fun and warm romantic comedy anime. Although difficult to find a show that is exactly like Lovely Complex, here are six anime that have similar romantic themes and comedic characters.

Misaki Miyazawa is the first ever female student council president at Seika High, a formerly all-boys school. She is disliked for her strict authority that she wields fiercely over the majority of male students. But despite her serious demeanor, she holds an embarrassing secret. Due to family circumstances, she works as a waitress at a maid cafe where she is accidentally spotted by Takumi Usui, the most popular boy at her high school. Fortunately for Misaki, Usui mutually agrees to not let anyone know about Misaki’s part time job. Over time, they both begin to understand one another much better despite the adverse situations they go through. Eventually Misaki’s personality and character eventually wins Usui over who has rejected every girl that has confessed to him since, but Misaki is unsure of whether or not she can properly accept his feelings. As in Lovely Complex, Kaichou wa Maid-sama also explores how characters deal with one-sided feelings which produces funny and sweet outcomes that are highly enjoyable. With a heartwarmingly romantic storyline and well-developed characters, Maid-sama is definitely an anime that romantic comedy enthusiasts should watch!

Kokoro Connect follows the story of Taichi Yagashi, Iori Nagase, Himeko Inaba, Yui Kiriyama and Yoshifumi Aoki who mysteriously end up switching bodies with each other. Despite the supernatural turn of events, the group of friends do their best to conduct themselves normally in school. Coming to grips with no longer being able to control their bodies, the group of friends struggle to understand themselves and each other, revealing to them the opportunity to explore their personality and love relationships. Despite the lack of constant comedy and a focus on a group of protagonists, Lovely Complex fans will definitely find the complicated feelings of high school love that is portrayed in this anime recognizable. With a brilliant balance of intriguing stories, amazing character development, and laughs, Kokoro Connect is a must watch for romantic comedy fans.

3. Nisekoi (Nisekoi: False Love)

Nisekoi-
[Information episodes=" 20 " aired=" January 2014 – May 2014 "]

All Raku Ichijou wants to do is to have a normal and calm high school life, but as the son of the local yakuza boss his, it is far from ordinary. On his way to school he is greeted with a knee to the face by none other than the aggressive Chitoge Kirasaki, who turns out to be the daughter of a rival gang! Needless to say, they do get off on the wrong foot and develop a dislike for each other, but they are hilariously forced to have a fake relationship when their fathers tell them to be a couple to resolve a territory dispute. This complicates matters for Raku since he already has a crush on the kind Kosaki Onodera who similarly has romantic feelings for him, but cannot adequately express them. The situation is further corrupted when a girl from his past, Marika Tachibana, appears and claims to be Raku’s fiancee, hilariously complicating the dynamic between the peculiar love triangle. Soon enough, even Chitoge finds herself struggling to comprehend if what she feels for Raku is real love or a meaningless manifestation of their false love. Although typically recognized as a harem anime, Nisekoi has romantic and comedy elements that fans of Lovely Complex will enjoy, delivering with it a wholesome anime feel despite the genre. In particular, the vivid characterization of the characters is what makes Nisekoi so unlike other harem animes. The meaningful and charming dynamics between the personality driven Raku and the main female characters creates a cute romance that Lovely Complex fans can easily enjoy. For example, Chitoge’s struggles to understand what she feels for Raku are particularly reminiscent of Risa’s endeavor to grasp her own feelings for Otani. In tandem with hilarious comedy, the romantic feelings portrayed in Shaft’s creatively artistic animation will surely attract Lovely Complex and romantic comedy fans.

acchi kocchi dvd
[Information episodes=" 12 " aired=" April 2012 – June 2012 "]

Acchi Kocchi follows the cute story of Tsumiki Miniwa who tries to understand the feelings of her charming and dense crush, Io Otonashi. He often displays heart melting affection and kindness towards her, but never seems to follow through to the next step which always ends up confusing Tsumiki. It does not help her that she is easily flustered whenever he is around her. Her carefree group of school friends are of little help as well, playfully teasing Tsumiki about her feelings at every change they get. With no one else reliable to turn to, Tsumiki finds herself in an embarrassing dilemma that plays out in this charming slice of life. Even without serious drama or intense feelings that are common in similar animes, Acchi Kocchi makes for a very relaxing and casual romantic comedy. Essentially a slice of life with only a small touch of romance, it delivers a cute story that Lovely Complex fans will find familiar. Like Risa’s struggle to express her true feelings to Otani, Tsumiki’s almost constant flustering comes across as cute and funny at the same time. But apart from the similarity, the overall heartfelt feelings of love that Acchi Kocchi portrays makes it an easy to enjoy anime.

For refusing to give up a stray cat, Sorata Kanda is forced to move into Sakura Dormitory where Suiko’s eccentric and trouble-making students are forced to live. But just as he was growing accustomed to the craziness in the dorm, he is burdened with having to help world famous painter Mashiro Shiina who cannot be left alone to take care of herself. Despite everything, however, life still manages to throw fun and comedy towards Sorata and his unusual group of friends. Over the course of the year, all the residents of Sakura Dorm also work hard to pursue their respective interests, but not without heartache and difficulty along the way. Their projects are further complicated when unrequited feelings occur, shaking the foundations of the mutual relationships that the dorm is built upon. If the regularly occurring comedy is not enough to convince Lovely Complex fans to watch Sakurasou no Pet na Kanojo, then the cute romantic story taking place in the background will. Although Sorata and Mashiro’s relationship is not as comedically outlandish as Risa and Otani’s, the pure and warm feelings that develop between the two are thoroughly enjoyable.

Leaving behind his shamefully dramatic persona as the “Dark Flame Master,” Yuuta Togashi is determined to start his life afresh in high school. Almost immediately, however, he stumbles upon Rikka Takanashi who continues to harbor fantastical middle school delusions. Moreover, Rikka somehow knows about Yuuta’s past and admires him much to Yuuta’s own embarrassment. They unexpectedly end up gathering up a circle of friends centered around Rikka’s delusions despite the negative sentiments he still harbors about his past. However, the two of them slowly become romantically closer, but not without going on a difficult and tumultuous journey of high school love. The relationship between Yuuta and Rikka does not start out as romantically theme like romantic comedies, but like Love Complex, both of the protagonists take an emotional trip to discover their true feelings. With its clever humor, cute drama, and relatable storyline, all portrayed with fantastic animation, Chuunibyou is definitely an anime worth spending time to watch.

For those unfamiliar with or just starting to watch the show, Yumeiro Patissiere, an anime adaptation of the popular shoujo manga with the same name, follows the journey of 14-year-old Ichigo Amano as she trains to become a patissiere (a female pastry chief). Though slightly older, BONJOUR Sweet Love Patisserie’s main character, Sayuri Haruno, resembles Ichigo due to her good-natured personality in the face of adversity and her possession of a reverse harem. Each BONJOUR Sweet Love Patisserie episode is roughly five minutes long since it is an original net animation (ONA). Despite the brevity of each episode, BONJOUR Sweet Love Patisserie is jam packed with romance and sweets. Gauken Alice, a comedy shoujo anime with plentiful dashes of magic, focuses on Mikan as she enrolls in the elite Alice Academy, a school for people with unique abilities, as she searches for best friend Hotaru Imai. Much less about desserts than it is about Japanese cooking, Koufuku Graffitti is a slice-of-life anime for those who likes cute girls and delicious food. With regards to the show’s attention to food, Koufuku Graffitti is very much like Yumeiro Patissiere, a show that hired a professional patisserie to advise the animation staff on the depictions of the pastries. However, it should be noted that this series is geared for a slightly older audience had has some elements of fan service. Koufuku Graffiti is about the everyday life of Ryo Machiko, a second-year middle school student living by herself following the death of her grandmother, and her second cousin Kirin Morino, Kirin stays with Machiko in Tokyo on the weekends for school. Although it is a series that could be called the female version of shounen anime series Beelzeebud, Chibi☆Devi! portrays a hard working female protagonist much like Yumeiro Patissiere. Additionally, this comedy shoujo anime echoes notes of innocence and freshness despite its representation of young girls in grown up situations like Yumeiro Patissiere does. With each episode roughly five minutes long, Chibi☆Devi! will give you a compact punch of simple and sweet pleasure. Chibi☆Devi! is about 14 year old Sawada Honoka, a shy girl who one day finds a devil baby named Mao in her room. Much in line with the previous anime recommended based on their depictions of hardworking, cute female protagonists like Ichigo, Working!! portrays a wide variety of characters trying their best. For those particularly interested in characters like Ichigo, Popura Taneshima, the short but industrious high school student part-timer, might be up your alley. It should be noted that like Koufuku Gormet, this show is for slightly older audiences and may have a more mature sense of humor than Yumeiro Patissiere. Working!!, an anime based off the 4-panel comic strip with the same name, centers about the working environment of a certain family restaurant called Wagnaria located in Hokkaido. A popular anime series, the third season is set to air in Summer 2015.

6. Antique Bakery

antique bakery dvd
[Information episodes=" 12 " aired=" July 2008– September 2008 "]

Last but not least, Antique Bakery is for those attracted to Yumeiro Patissiere because of the sweets and themes of baking and cooking. Set in a popular bakery oriented to female customers, Antique Bakery perhaps shows the future of the male students attending the pastry school depicted Yumeiro Patissiere. As a small note of warning, Antique Bakery has hints of shounen’ai and is an adaptation of the manga under the same name by Fumi Yoshinaga, famed mangaka who made her debut in the Boys Love genre. Antique Bakery concentrates on the everyday lives of four men, Keisuke Tachibana, Yusuke Ono, Eiji Kanda, and Chikage Kobayashi, working at a small bakery owned by Tachibana, a man who cannot stand eating sweets. Though the anime may seem dull on the outset, beneath the façade is a drama of emotions, unrequited love, and kidnapping ingeniously packaged within the genre of silice-of-life and comedy.

Ore Monogatari!! Preview (No Spoilers)

Takeo Gouda is a Japanese high school student. Unfortunately, he looks nothing like one. He’s tall, he’s muscular, he has masculine features like big lips, and very large hands. Some people would mistake him for someone in their late twenties. Takeo has had crushes on many girls in the past, but no one has ever returned his feelings so he stays single. His best friend Makoto Sunakawa is probably the epitome of a ladies man. Slim slender figure, pretty face, good looking hair, good style, and an attitude that’s very blasé about everything. One day Takeo meets Rinko Yamato who Takeo is sure is in love with his best friend Makoto as has every other girl in his past. He takes it upon himself to support his best friend and fix the two up. But is that really what’s happening here? Who’s lying to who? Who’s really into love with who? Everyone deserves a chance at love.

Who does Ore Monogatari!! cater to?

Ore Monogatari!! takes the concept of a shoujo manga and turns it onto its head. Usually it’s the girl who’s in love with some male character who doesn’t know she exists, or he finds her annoying, etc, etc. Moving past that though, Ore Monogatari!! puts a male character in the lead and slaps some comedic characteristics on him. To be honest, I really thought this was going to be a stereotypical, girly show as I’m not a huge shoujo anime watcher, save for masterpieces like Kimi ni Todoke. However, this show inverts a constant storyline, makes it almost believable, and you even get characters like Takeo that are quite relatable. Plus, manly feels everywhere! You can’t tell your friends about it, but you can certainly enjoy it while watching this show. I wasn’t always the perfect vision of masculinity way that I am now, so I can relate to being the outcast, and liking people who didn’t like me back. Just like Takeo.

What's so appealing about this piece of work.

First of all, there is definitely the relatability that I mentioned above. Another great part though of Ore Monogatari!!, is how while it is a shoujo manga, it’s not. It’s rather paradoxical. The guy is the center instead of the girl. He does manly things like eat a lot, go to judo matches, save people from burning buildings, ETC. Ore Monogatari!! is enjoyable because it doesn’t choke you with romance. Sure there is some, but there is plenty of other stories to go around so that it doesn’t seem diluted. Plus, there is comedy! Usually, shoujo manga doesn’t rely on it too much. Due to Takeo being unable to read a situation, or just plain brash, he does some funny things. For example: with a roll of saran wrap in episode six. The other great part about this series is that the couple actually get to know each other. It’s not a girl running around in the end finally confessing based on assumptions of how a guy is and will act, but the couple do grow together which makes for some funny misunderstandings. P.S. Makoto’s sister is probably the best so far. I love her!

Ore Monogatari!! Main Characters List

Takeo Gouda

ore monogatari Takeo Gouda

Voice Actor :Takuya Eguchi

Takeo is the main character of the series. He’s a large, hulking male with very masculine features and characteristics. No one ever likes him when he confesses his feelings and girls have often told him that he’s frightening when he does. Takeo is, however, very popular with the guys due to his tall height and strength. He’s a very kind and down to earth guy, who is actually a bit oblivious when it comes to his own feelings, and those around him. He is very kind and gentle, and is always willing to help those around him. Also, he has really bad rbf, aka “resting bitch face.” He constantly has a menacing face or scowl even though that’s not how he’s actually feeling. Which can lead to some funny situations. He and Makoto have been best friends for years. He met Rinko when he saved her from a pervert who was trying to grope her on a train.

Makoto Sunakawa

ore monogatari Makoto Sunakawa

Voice Actor :Nobunaga Shimazaki

Makoto is the best friend of Takeo. They have been friends since childhood. Makoto tends to act a bit aloof in the sense that he is disinterested in everything. This includes all the girls around him who almost throw themselves at him. Makoto often doles out advice to Takeo and he is a good student. He is loyal to a fault with Takeo and he often turns down the girls who come and confess to him, because of the rude comments that they make about Takeo.

Rinko Yamato

ore monogatari Rinko Yamato

Voice Actor : Megumi Han

Rinko is the girl who is saved on the train by Takeo when he sees the pervert going in for a move. She is very different from other girls and doesn’t tell Takeo that he’s terrifying and instead compliments him on his strength and bravery. She’s an avid cook and bakes cookies for him as a way to say thanks. She attends a different school from the boys and goes to an all-girls school. She is the only girl in Takeo’s life that Makoto has ever referred to as a nice person. This probably has to do with the fact that instead of making a scene when she is saved, she simply thanks him and praises him.

Ore Monogatari!! Review

Ore Monogatari!! Let’s get into it. *cues music* Note: This part has been written while the show was airing and it will be updated when it finishes airing so we can talk about all the juicy tidbits. This show is too good. I want to go out and punch walls and fight people after watching it. Maybe I’ll even go set something on fire to feel manly. Why does this show make me feel this way? It is because Ore Monogatari!! is just so good at hitting you in all the feels. You get the feels that you were not expecting to feel, but it wants you to feel. That’s what the theme of this review is, FEELS. There are so many moments where you want to bro-out with Takeo due to his personality. He’s just a regular guy, but Takeo is a standup guy. He really cares for Rinko and the contrast of him holding her hand and getting embarrassed is the greatest thing ever. He has to ask Motoko questions about how to do something for fear of upsetting Rinko. The best part is with the saran wrap where Takeo holds Matoko against the wall so he can practice kissing at Motoko’s expense. I almost started crying I was laughing so hard. Takeo’s other great quality that we have seen so far is his selfless devotion to others. When the woman’s baby falls in the river, Takeo dives right on it without even thinking twice. He also saves Rinko and Matoko in the beginning of the series from a falling steel beam.

oremonogatari fan art[sourceLink url="http://www.pixiv.net/member_illust.php?mode=medium&illust_id=50265501" a_text="Oremonogatari!! Fan Art"]

Another plot progression that I really like is how everyone thinks, starting with Matoko’s sister (who I really, REALLY hope comes back for more), for a period of time, that Rinko has some dark secret from Takeo. It’s even more entertaining because “the secret” makes the viewers think that Rinko is some kind of slut, or she’s using Takeo for something… Right? Wrong! She just wants to hold hands with him, and maybe even kiss. FEELS. They get you every time. Her confession is awesome. Another part that’s great is how people are terrified of Takeo but they are instantly in love with Makoto. When Rinko drags her five friends out to go on some group date and Takeo brings five guys, the girls are floored. Rinko is cute and they can’t see why she’s into Takeo. They really like Makoto though! Thankfully, as a twist of fate, even after they trash-talk him, he saves them from a burning building. He even tells Makoto’s sister that she is beautiful like an orchid when everyone else is bullying her. FEELS. This is what leads her to have a crush on Takeo from that day.

Ore Monogatari Review Highlight 3[sourceLink url="http://www.pixiv.net/member_illust.php?mode=medium&illust_id=50265501" a_text="Oremonogatari!! Fan Art"]

A fantastic aspect of this series is the running theme of not being shallow. Most people in this series are quite judgmental at the sight of Takeo, or him with Rinko together as a couple. The interesting thing to note about everyone in this series is that once they move past their shallow position, with the exception of Rinko who never judges Takeo to begin with, everyone begins to love Takeo and respect him for his stellar personality. The art style is pretty good too in this show as it tends to have more soft tones for Rinko and harsher more block styles for Takeo. This is probably to illustrate the contract between the two characters. HOWEVER, it doesn’t explain why Makoto has such soft art styles like Rinko when he’s a guy too. The only major question I have at this time is where is the series going to go? The couple has met, confessed this feelings for each other, and started dating. The show is slated for 24 episodes. Are some more major characters going to be rolled out? Or is Makoto going to be in need of a matchmaker a la Takeo and Rinko? It’s just getting good and we can’t say for sure yet, so I’ll have to keep watching and hope you will too!

1. Role Reversal

Ore Monogatari Review Highlight 1

I said it before and I’ll say it again. This show takes the traditional roles filled by characters and flips it on its head which is fantastic! There aren’t any whiny, needy characters starved for attention from someone who doesn’t even notice them. Instead you have a guy, who’s actually a good guy, getting paired with an adorable girl and they mesh together (at least so far) quite well. It’s rare and refreshing. While it still is heteronormative in its approach for the most part (aka a strong male character and a peppy, yet tiny female character), it’s still wonderfully executed.

2. The art style/contrast

Ore Monogatari Review Highlight 2

Ore Monogatari!! does a fantastic job of shows deep contrasts. Japan, especially in Shoujo manga, looooooooooooooooves to portray guys as very skinny with semi long or longish hair. However, that doesn’t hold true in this manga. You have Takeo who is this giant, bulking male with an over accentuated frame, height and facial features. On the other hand, you have a very fragile and delicate Rinko who almost looks like she isn’t the same age as Takeo. Some of the most obvious examples of this are the elevator scene, when Takeo tries to hold Rinko’s hand and when they try taking a photo together. The art style does a great job of showing this.

3. The relationship of Takeo and Rinko

ore monogatari highlight3

I have harped on this one nonstop. Usually, shoujo manga is notorious for basically putting a shy/non-standout female character in love with some guy who has barely spoken two words to her, but those two words were enough for her to fall in love with him. Not that it is a bad thing mind you. However, Ore Monogatari!! Actually has the characters start dating rather quickly which is great because you get to watch them go through the phases of dating. Awkwardness is always funny. Uncertainty is another great one. These mesh together with others to give you these two people trying to love and live and get to know each other. If their relationship doesn’t hit you in all the feels, you need a new set of feels because it is ridiculously cute and I love every minute of their interactions.

All in all, I’m already ready to give this show a 10/10. Art style is great. FEELS. The characters are nice and developed. Punches to the FEELS. It’s challenges the traditional roles of a shoujo manga and changes things up. FEELS. A fantastic underlying subplot is the, “don’t judge a book by its cover” theme. This is a show that shocks you when it’s over because it just felt as if the episode started. This show reminds me of how much I loved Kimi ni Todoke, and if you have not seen Kimi ni Todoke yet, then please go see it asap. I heavily recommend it. I’m not one usually for shoujo shows, but that one and Ore Monogatari!! are amazing! Don’t miss out on this fantastic show! Is it the best of the season? For love stories, yes!!

Ore monogatari finale Closing paragraph

I’m so sad. I’m so sad that this show ended!!! Ore Monogatari has to be the best love story of the year. It’s even got a live action movie that will be coming out in theaters in Japan on October 31st! So if you’re in Japan, you have to go see it! That being said, Ore Monogatari was a great ride through and through. Let’s talk about some key points that happened throughout the show since we last talked. Takeo gets a “disciple” named Mariya while practicing for sports day. Takeo encourages her to run faster and she does, taking off. Soon though, that motivation turns into affection and she is found out by Makoto. He talks her out of it as Rinko and Takeo are a happy couple. Mariya stays in the picture though after she confesses and Takeo treats her as a friend while reaffirming that he only loves Rinko. Then when Christmas rolls around Osamu awkwardly confesses to one of Rinko’s friends, Nanako which ends up with them in a couple. The really funny part though is how Nanko does a 180 when it comes to dealing with Osamu. I was really happy to see Makoto’s older sister-with-no-filter, Ai, come back as well. Her own feelings for Takeo resurge and a guy who likes Ai is convinced that she just needs to talk it out. While being hilarious, Ai manages to deal with her feelings for Takeo as well.

[sourceLink url="https://twitter.com/poppuqn/status/585021968606306304" a_text="Ore Monogatari Fan Art"]

Finally, towards the end, Rinko takes a part time job at a cake shop. She meets a guy there named Kouki who can make really good cakes and desserts. She encourages him and Kouki then makes some amazingly delicious items that sell out. She points out that Takeo is her boyfriend and Kouki demands that Takeo break up with Rinko because he is a better fit for her than Takeo is. Eventually Rinko spurs on Kouki to win a cooking contest and he confesses his feelings for Rinko. Once he does, Rinko turns him down. She sweetly tells him that he won based on his hard work and not her feelings. Takeo gets the courage to start calling Rinko by her first name and their relationship takes a step further. (D’AWWWWW) This show is great not only for the way it gets to you, but the powerful message that it sends. Multiple times throughout the show, Takeo says over and over that girls are not interested in him. While yes, he has been turned down in the past, this show repeatedly shows that he is actually surrounded by people that are interested in him. It was a matter of not getting beat down by the rejections of others and looking around. This is especially important to us the viewers because in life, many times we are turned down or beat down. However, it is a matter of looking up or looking around and not looking down. This is what allows us to grow. This is what allows us to be better people, and this is what allows us to become happy. It’s not about what’s under us, it’s about what’s ahead or above us! I loved this series and I still maintain that this is the role reversal of a Kimi ni Todoke. I hope that you can see the movie as I will be going to see it and writing a review about it. Keep your eyes peeled for that in the future!

Anime Genres for Women

We have already introduced the Top 5 anime genre for men to you - now it’s time to address all the female fans out there. In this article we feature some genres that women in particular should be able to enjoy. Our choices are based both on the main leads and the major themes of the shows we will present to you. They range from more joyful and light-hearted stories to deep and moving shows, so there should be something for everyone to enjoy. Even if you are not a woman, stick through until the end since these shows and genres are universal masterpieces. Enjoy!

[ad_top2 class="mt40"]

1. Shoujo

Let me start with one of the more obvious choices, Shoujo anime. “Shoujo” literally translates to “young girl” so the name already tells you for whom shows of these genres are mainly produced. It’s not only the topics and storylines of Shoujo anime that make them so popular among women. Often, the story is told from the viewpoint of girls so it’s easy for female viewers to relate to them. Topics that are dealt with range from love, friendship or drama to magic and Co. These shows get many young girls started as life-long anime fans so let me highlight two of the most successful Shoujo anime.

Kaichou wa Maid-sama!

kaichouwamaidsama
[Information episodes=" 26 " aired=" April 2010 - September 2010 "]

Kaichou wa Maid-sama is almost infamous when it comes to Shoujo or Romance anime. Thousands of girls out there have watched the relationship between Usui and Misaki slowly develop as the two of them tackle their daily problems together. This show does not only offer a cute love story but also a strong female lead that works as a role model to many girls. Misaki does not wait for a prince in shiny armor to come and save her but rather takes means into her own hands. Who would have guessed that the strong and independent student works at a maid cafe in her free time and serves guests in a fitting uniform? Kaichou wa Maid-sama is funny and entertaining at the same time and definitely a must-watch for all the girls out there.

Lovely Complex

lovely complex dvd
[Information episodes=" 24 " aired=" April 2007 - September 2007"]

Lovely Complex is a similar timeless classic with a great sense of humor. It tells the uncommon love story of an extraordinarily tall girl and an extraordinarily small guy. Between their constant teasing and harmless fights they start developing feelings for each other despite their obvious differences in appearance. Lovely Complex is definitely not only aimed towards women or young girls. The jokes are universal and can be enjoyed by almost anyone who likes the a little bit over-the-top kind of humor of many anime shows. Most importantly, Lovely Complex shows some amazing characters and especially the main leads will make their way into your heart. Check it out if you can.

2. Josei

These shows could be described as the grown-up versions of Shoujo shows and are aimed towards more mature women in their late teens or early adulthood. With this level of maturity comes a whole new set of major themes like love, passion, struggles for success and the difficulties of womanhood. Josei stories are at least as popular as their Shoujo counterparts and many women effortlessly transition from one genre to the other. These shows take you on adventures through adulthood and all the new struggles that come with it. A big recommendation for those of you who are in the same phase of life right now.

Chihayafuru

chihayafuru dvd
[Information episodes=" 25 " aired=" October 2011 - March 2012 "]

Chihayafuru does a great job at depicting a girl living out her passion and striving to improve herself constantly. Not only that, but Chihayafuru introduces you to the rather unknown card game Karuta which is an important part of Japanese culture. Protagonist Chihaya Ayase started her journey towards becoming a professional Karuta player from a young age. Now, after enrolling in high school, she wants to share her passion with her classmates and create a Karuta club. Chihayafuru is a great feel-good anime that grabs your attention from the very first episode and shows you the journey of Chihaya and her friends.

Nodame Cantabile

Nodame Cantabile DVD
[Information episodes=" 23 " aired=" January 2007 - June 2007 "]

Nodame Cantabile is a timeless classic and a must-watch for fans of classical music. The story is set in a college environment and follows the rather unique relationship between Shinichi Chiaki and Noda Megumi. This show is at least as hilarious as it is engrossing. It gives you an insight into the world of professional musicians and what it means to completely immerse yourself into the world of music. Nodame Cantabile especially highlights the personal struggles each character has to overcome. Together as a team and with the help of their love for music Chiaki and Nodame manage to surpass their limits and continue on their journey towards becoming praised musicians.

3. Romance

Ah, the good old romance shows. A fateful encounter, a tragic love story and two heartbroken lovers - romances like that have entertained women (and men) for centuries. So why not check out some of the most successful romance anime of our times? The plots of these shows are all fairly similar, but still unique in their own way. Each couple has its own dynamics and each relationship unfolds differently. So give multiple shows a try, you never know what kind of story might await you.

Nana

nana dvd
[Information episodes=" 47" aired=" April 2006 - March 2007 "]

Nana is one of the most highly recommended shows when it comes to anime aimed towards women. Maybe it’s the fact that this show highlights the lives of two women, both named Nana, who couldn’t be more different that makes this show so interesting. It really tries to depict their daily struggles and what it means to be a woman in these days. In the center of the show stands the friendship between the two women that decide to move in together. One Nana is an aspiring rock star while the other one is a more feminine and shy kind of girl. Still, despite their differences in character they manage to get along and grow closer to each other than they would’ve ever expected.

Skip Beat

skip beat DVD
[Information episodes=" 25 " aired=" October 2008 - March 2009 "]

Skip Beat is a heart-warming story that still has as many fans today as it had when it first aired. Again, we have a strong female lead whose passion and strength should be an example to all of us. After getting her heart broken by long-time boyfriend and uprising idol Shou, Kyouko decides to take her happiness into her own hands. She steps into the world of entertainment and plans on becoming the next big thing in order to get revenge on Shou. Easier said than done, as Kyouko soon has to realize. Skip Beat is an up-lifting and humorous show that will leave you behind wishing for more episodes.

4. Drama

Drama shows shine with their ability to portray characters going through hardships only to come out stronger than they were before. They don’t only try to tell a story or introduce some interesting characters to you, but rather convey a message that is bigger than the show itself. Drama shows can be deep and moving while still remaining entertaining and fun to watch. This genre is challenging like no other and good drama shows will almost certainly be a huge success. If you are ready for some brain teasers and moving stories then check out these drama recommendations.

Mahou Shoujo Madoka Magica (Puella Magi Madoka Magica)

Mahou Shoujo Madokau2605Magica
[Information episodes=" 12 " aired=" January 2011 - April 2011 "]

This show might look unlikely to be moving or even remotely thought provoking, but trust me, Madoka Magica will surprise you. It’s a show as deep and emotional as no other and the end will touch you no matter what. The story is revolving around a group of magical girls that fight to protect the people around them. But unlike most other shows we do not have a harmless adventure or nice story about friendship and companionship. No, Madoka Magica shows the dark side of being a magical girl and how heroine Madoka gets trapped inside a world full of regrets and unfulfilled wishes. Bear with Madoka Magica until the last episode and you will be rewarded with a grand final battle.

Usagi Drop (Bunny Drop)

This anime shows both the tough and the joyful sides of everyday life and how one man tries to find a good balance between them. After his grandfather dies, Daikichi has to find out that the old man had an illicit child with another woman. Rejected by other family members, Daikichi is the only one ready to adopt the little girl called Rin. 5. Slice of Life

Last but not least we have Slice of Life anime. As you might expect, these shows are set in everyday life and want to tell extraordinary stories in an ordinary environment. These shows are especially great if you are not a fan of supernatural stories set in a far-away universe, but rather like to watch something that’s easy to relate to. Often, these shows do not have a clear or straight-forward plot but rather want to carry the viewers away into the daily lives of the main characters. Of course, many of these shows are also interesting for men, but especially the ones with female leads are relatable for all the girls out there.

Barakamon

barakamon dvd
[Information episodes=" 12 " aired=" July 2014 - September 2014 "]

Barakamon was a highly anticipated show of the Summer 2014 season. With its lovable main cast it captured the hearts of its viewers in no time. If you are out for a fun and charming show then Barakamon might be the one for you. Young calligrapher Handa Seishu gets sent away to a remote island after punching a successful artist for criticizing his work. There, the young man has to get used to life on the countryside as well as to the eccentric people living there. Soon, he realizes under how much pressure he has put himself in Tokyo and that there are more things out there than just competitions and success. A heart-warming story and the feel-good show of last summer.

Suki-tte Ii na yo. (Say “I Love You”)

suki tte iinayo dvd
[Information episodes=" 13 " aired=" October 2012 - December 2012 "]

The last anime recommendation on this list is Suki-tte Ii na yo which brings you back to high school and shows you the troubles of finding your first love. Not only does heroine Mei Tachibana struggle finding a boyfriend, but making friends in general is a challenge for her. That’s why she grows up isolated and decides to give up on relationships with other people. It’s not until handsome and popular Yamato Kurosawa steps into her life that she decides to move out of her comfort zone. Suki-tte Ii na yo shows not only the importance of trust and friendship but also the daily struggles of female students. Definitely worth a watch.

Have you ever acted contrary to what you intended? That is the case with Hinamori Amu, who acts completely cool and aloof, yet inside, she’s terribly shy and meek in the anime Shugo Chara! which aired between October 2007 and September 2008 with a total of 51 episodes. Yet, upon making a wish, she wakes up to find 3 colorful eggs belonging to 3 guardian characters whose mission it is to bring out Amu’s inner self! With her guardian characters, she finds herself joining the student council on a special mission to find the X character eggs, but along the way, she finds out about the true selves of her fellow council members as well as herself. This anime brings you in with its cuteness, yet it’s the complex background stores of each character that make you fall in love with every one of the characters. Need something lighthearted? You’ve got your anime! Now, let’s explore other similar anime!

1. Bishoujo Senshi Sailor Moon: Crystal (Pretty Guardian Sailor Moon: Crystal)

sailor moon crystal dvd
[sourceLink asin="B00LJKNM50" asin_jp="" text="" url="" ]
[Information episodes=" 26 " aired=" July 2015 - Ongoing "]

Now there’s no denying this anime classic. It follows Tsukino Usagi, a childish teenage who is quick to complain and cry, who comes across a special cat with an incredible ability to talk. Usagi finds herself suddenly able to transform into a Sailor Soldier and the fate of the world is in her hands as she seeks out the Illusionary Silver Crystal with her fellow Sailor Soldiers. The similarities are not to be missed between Sailor Moon and Shugo Chara! Both anime feature a magical girl theme, but they also have much deeper stories than we could ever predict. Although both anime start off lighthearted as we are introduced to the plotline, we soon find that there is more to the Sailor Soldiers than just fighting evil doers. Character development is quite evident as we watch each one of the characters grow to be well rounded individuals. Do you want to know how our crybaby turns out? The only way to find out is to watch this anime. It’s currently ongoing so don’t miss out.

[Information episodes=" 44 " aired=" February 1999 – January 2000 "]

Now this 90s anime is not to be missed! If you cannot get enough of magical girls and fighting demons, this anime will not be a disappointment. This may be a more mature magical girl anime compared to Shugo Chara!, but there are plenty of scenes that will just make you laugh. The development of the plot alone will get your heart to go doki doki! This anime stars Kusakabe Maron, a regular teenage girl, or is she? She’s actually the reincarnation of Jeanne d’Arc who she transforms into at night to steal the demons that are sealed away inside famous works of art. As we follow Maron through her unusual adolescence, we realize that though Jeanne d’Arc has been gone for many centuries now, her future is entangled with Maron’s future and perhaps, there’s more to her life than just battling demons. Beware, this thief has quite the adventure ahead of her.

Gakuen Alice follows Sakura Mikan, a little girl whose best friend is Imai Hotaru. [sourceLink asin="B00B2TUM7O" asin_jp="" text="" url="" ]
[Information episodes=" 12 " aired=" January 2012 – March 2012 "]

One of the reasons this anime is so similar to Shugo Chara! is due to the character similarities between Shirakiin Ririchiyo and Hinamori Amu. They both act cool and aloof, yet deep inside, they do not mean that at all. It is an uncontrollable part of their personalities. Then there’s Miketsukami Soushi and Tsukiyoki Ikuto who are both quite the mysterious characters that leave the watchers constantly wondering. Inu x Boku SS is also a magical girl anime, though technically, every character has something magical about him or her, revolving around your basic school life. Inu x Boku SS begins with Shirakiin Ririchiyo arriving at her new school dorm where she believes she can finally move out and live on her own. In reality, she found herself in a dorm where all of the students are accompanied by a member of a very special secret service. Ririchiyo soon finds herself accompanied by Soushi, a very mysterious Secret Service agent who appears to know her. Not only that, but this dorm houses a very confidential secret: they are all spiritually beings from important families. Now, much like the other anime in this list, this is a magical girl anime and the protagonist is very young. The main protagonist, Karin, does spend a lot of the anime discovering who she really is, but in a much different way than Amu did. Watch to find out! Kamichama Karin is the story of Hanazono Karin, a 13 year old girl, whose parents recently passed so she is forced to live with relatives. She comes across the Kujyou Kazune one day, which leads to a series of strange events resulting in her transforming into a little goddess! The main character of this anime, Kaede, is quite shy like Amu. She cannot speak her feelings at all, but this little fantasy anime is bent on changing that. With the use of magic, Kaede is going to have to get out of her shell. Amu purchases a cup at a mysterious shop. At the bottom of the cup there is a note to drink cocoa while reciting a message aloud for a muglox to appear to grant any wish. Upon making her wish, Mirumo appears! Who does Nurse Angel Ririka SOS cater to?

Back in the mid-90s when the magical girl genre was booming thanks to “Sailor Moon,” “Nurse Angel” is seen as one of its clones but with a different gimmick. I say for anybody who wants to see how “Sailor Moon” influenced a genre, this will be one of those anime to check out. Since the character is younger, it does feel more innocent and at the same time, brings a different baggage of emotions in the context that the fate of the world is in the hands of a girl so young.

What's so appealing about this piece of work.

Beyond a distinction in gimmick to the magical girl formula, I feel the viewer gets to see how a little girl such as Ririka is usually independent in her battle against the forces of Dark Joker despite relying on one friend though he may not be as powerful as her. I find Ririka to be an excellent role model for children, and I find the overall theme presents a wonderful message about protecting the environment.

Nurse Angel Ririka SOS Opening

Nurse Angel Ririka SOS Main Characters List

Moriya Ririka

ririka sos Ririka

Voice Actor :Aso Kaori

The main heroine of our story, Ririka is just a normal elementary school girl until she encounters Kanou, the new boy at school and gives her the Angel Cap. With the Angel Cap, she becomes Nurse Angel. She is also in love with Kanou. Due to receiving a present from Kanou, she earns the jealousy of all the girls at school. She is spunky and tends to spend time with her best friends, Seiya, Karin and Anna.

Uzaki Seiya

Kanou Nozomu/Kanon

ririka sos kanou

[ad_middle class="mt40"] [signSpoiler]

Nurse Angel Ririka SOS Review

The series is formulaic in which you see Ririka trying to live life as a 10 year old girl, some monster or minion shows up, and you have the recycled footage of her transformation and her finishing move. But there were certain things from this series that really took me by surprise which kept me hooked. Of course, those factors that will be covered in the three events section. I really like what this series does to make itself not seem like a “Sailor Moon” rip off beyond a simple change in concept in regards to costumes. I really like how the series uses its characters as it progresses and I will admit these certain plot twists threw me off in a good way. The climax did take me by surprise and it really made me care for Ririka, her friends and family. The episodes will also highlight some of her family members and friends, which I thought adds more emotion to how it ends. I know I am indicating a spoiler here, but I am glad the series did not abuse Kanou’s usage and it allows Ririka to grow. The villains work in context to a children’s series but, I think older viewers will have difficulty taking villains, who just want to pollute and corrupt the world just for the sake of it, very seriously. I managed to enjoy this series mostly because of Ririka and her friendship with Seiya. The art is very simple and generic but you can tell the characters apart. I am also glad it does nothing to sexualize the characters in comparison, to lets say some moe or loli titles. If you want to do easy fan art or learn how to draw Japanese style animation, I say this is a good reference point to learn the basics. I feel that the costume and the transformation sequences were done appropriately and in taste. And yes, it abuses the hell out of recycled footage.

Nurse Angel Ririka SOS

My only big issue was that Kanou was drawn way too mature for a 12 year old and looks more like he could be in high school. From the way he looks and the way he dresses, granted the series will show you more about him, and I think trying to blend in, he stands out way too much. As for Dewey, one of the villains, for a time, I couldn’t distinct if he was a man or woman until much later on. And add to the fact that the voice did not help. The opening and ending songs are really nice and catchy, and are all sung by Ririka’s seiyuu, Aso Kaori. The hook of the opening song, in which a mysterious woman is pleading for Ririka’s help, really brings you more into the show as opposed to the song by bringing them together. The opening song has a distinct intensity and a very sad tone. The ending theme is really upbeat and catchy about Ririka, though the lyrics do steal some of Sailor Moon’s catch phrases. However, I think the second opening and ending theme should have been switched in a way in which the ending theme should have been the opening and the opening theme should have been the ending. The background music itself is very elegant and there is a nice piano track in which it can both intensify desperate and hopeful atmospheres. Aso Kaori as Ririka, does a great job of being a 10-year-old girl. The performances that surprised me the most were the inclusions of Ishida Akira and Horikawa Ryo. Ishida Akira, famous as the voices of Gaara in Naruto and Kaworu in Evangelion, really blew me away as Seiya. Granted he had the same nasal voice, he does a good job of playing a 10 year old boy in this series, which I really didn’t recognize his voice, and his acting really impressed me. Horikawa Ryo, the voice of Vegeta from DBZ, plays the main villain, Buros. Granted he has done more feminine characters like Shun from Saint Seiya in which that performance will always impress me. As Buros, he is a bit feminine but in a more sadistic sense. He does have that sense of Vegeta’s voice, but way more crazy as opposed to megalomaniacal.

1. Kanou’s Sacrifice to Seiya

ririka sos highlight1

Throughout the first sixth of the series, Seiya on the surface has a very distrusting nature towards Kanou out of jealousy. Seiya is initially unaware of the true situation but after Kanou faces near death, Kanou entrusts his powers to Seiya. Without hesitation, Seiya takes Kanou’s powers and becomes part of the battle. Though he has no formal training, Seiya becomes pretty good at using them despite some initial difficulties.

2. The Return of Kanon/Kanou

ririka sos highlight2

While Kanon was recovering, Dark Joker took his body. Dark Joker heals his body and brain washes him to do their bidding and fight Ririka and Seiya. Knowing their strong bond, Ririka would not do anything to fight him showing how cruel and manipulative Dark Joker can be to accomplish their twisted objectives. Thankfully, he is cured and comes back to being a good guy.

3. Dewey Becomes a Good Guy

ririka sos highlight3

With Kanou becoming a bad guy, Dewey, one of Ririka’s strongest rivals who she previously spares, comes back to help Ririka. Initially, Dewey does not want to be seen as a good guy and claims he only wants to get back at Dark Joker for kicking him out. After being touched by the good nature of Ririka and Seiya, Dewey accepts the good in his heart and becomes a very valuable ally in the battles which get progressively tougher.

The thing that surprises me the most about Nurse Angel Ririka SOS, is the co-creator himself, Akimoto Yasushi. Yes, the exact same Akimoto Yasushi who helped create idol groups such as Onyanko Club in the 1980s and also created AKB48, Japan’s top idol group. So if any AKB48 fans reading want to know that he can tell a quality story in addition to making idol groups, this is your opportunity to check that out.

[Information episodes=" unknown " aired=" July 7, 2015 - ? "]

First on our list is Teekyuu 5. As you might have already guessed, this is the fifth season of the Teekyuu series, which tells the story of a hopeless all-girls tennis team. This show combines Slice of Life with lots of comedy and school elements. It is based on a 2012 manga and has gained enough popularity to produce multiple sequels. Teekyuu’s girls are a little bit quirky and unique, but that’s what adds so much charm to the story. The show itself focuses rather on the interaction between the different characters and their personal development than on the storyline. If you are a fan of school stories and club dynamics, then you should check Teekyuu 5 out. Of course, this anime also caters towards all sports fans, especially tennis enthusiasts.

[Information episodes=" Unknown " aired=" July 7, 2015 - ?"]

Non Non Biyori is a show for those of you that are done with reality and just want to escape to the perfect world of anime. The second season Non Non Biyori Repeat continues the story of Ichijou Hotaru and her friends and takes them and the viewers on new adventures. This story is set in the countryside where student Hotaru just recently moved in with her parents. The girl finds herself in a completely new environment and has to adapt to her new lifestyle. Like Teekyuu, this show deals with friendship and the developing relationship between the main cast. Non Non Biyori Repeat is an uplifting Slice of Life anime that does not try to stand out with slapstick humor or lots of special effects. It is a slow and quiet show that will most likely capture the hearts of its viewers.

iDOLM@STER Cinderella Girls gets a second season! The story of a girls group that strives to become idols and to find their own Cinderella story continues with lots of music, friendship and new adventures. For those of you that don’t know, this series is connected to the original iDOLM@STER, but introduces a new project called Cinderella girls, which - as the name might suggest - aims to turn the lives of common girls into a fairytale. The first season revolving around the practices and performances of a girls group already gave a good insight into what it means to be an idol. The upcoming season continues the story right where it left off and keeps exploring the idol universe while showing the viewers the daily lives of the girls.

Continuing with shows revolving around idols, next up is Venus Project. Its story is based on a unique mix of idols, futuristic setting and music elements. It’s hard to predict how it will turn out at this point - Venus Project might be the biggest surprise of this list. Venus Project is also the only original show on this list, meaning that it is not based on a manga or video game. At the bottom of the story lies a new animation technology called “Formula Venus” which turns the real-life performances of idols into a ranked form of digital entertainment. Just like iDOLM@STER, Venus Project wants to show more of the daily lives of idols and what it means to live in a world filled with passion and friendship, but also with competition and rivalry.

[Information episodes=" unknown " aired=" July 7, 2015 - ? "]

Last on our last is a third and final idol-based show. What makes Million Doll stand out is the fact that it introduces the importance of blogging and social media for Japanese idols. Starting out as a web manga, Million Doll managed to gain enough recognition to earn an anime adaptation starting this summer. Written by a self-identified otaku, this show tells the story of a female hikikomori (Japanese shut-in) who claims she’s able to turn any girl group into idols. How, you are asking? Through the power of internet promotion, social media and blogging, of course. Million Doll is a show that might surprise some of you, so keep your eyes open and give the first few episodes a try.

Revolutionary Girl Utena Preview / Plot (No Spoilers)

Middle school student Utena Tenjou is the star of her grade, garnering the attention of both males and females for her athletic abilities and rebel attitude. Her best friend, Wakaba, is her number one fan and supporter, but life quickly changes when Utena is given a new room assignment in the formerly empty dorms across campus. Upon entering her new building, she finds that she is the only occupant aside from her new roommate, Anthy Himemiya. Her and Anthy become friends and soon she witnesses another student, Saionji, bullying Anthy. Utena challenges him to a duel, unknowingly agreeing to something much larger. Utena wins and is awarded Anthy who is revealed to be the Rose Bride, an entity who grants power to her master, the power to change the world. Thus, Utena is thrust into constant battles in an attempt to keep Anthy safe as well as questioning what she is truly trying to accomplish through fighting.

Who does Revolutionary Girl Utena cater to?

The series is set up similar to most other magical girl anime in structure, but the twists and turns of the series will most definitely attract fans of mystery, shoujo, and supernatural genres as well. The director formerly worked on Sailor Moon, so most of his influence derives from similar magical girl anime clichés with more serious and bizarre twists to spice things up. His most recent anime is Mawaru Penguindrum, so viewers who have watched and loved this series will love Utena.

What's so appealing about this piece of work.

The overall strangeness of the show is one of the series strongest points. The plot takes itself way too seriously, but the visuals are all over the place by pulling ideas from Takarazuka Theater and combining them with normal mundane actions. Watching this show makes viewers question if they are overanalyzing or if the director is just messing with the audience. The story itself is one of growing up and maturing through allegorical visuals.

REVOLUTIONARY GIRL UTENA TV Series - Trailer 1

Revolutionary Girl Utena Main Characters List

Utena Tenjou

shoujo kakumei utena utena tenjou

Voice Actor : Tomoko Kawakami

Saved by a prince after her parents died when she was a child, Utena became so impressed with him she decided to become a prince herself one day. As a result, she frequently wears men’s clothing, including her school uniform, and radiates confidence. She was left a rose ring by her prince, and her goal is to one day find him. The emblem on her ring led her to Ohtori Academy where she is quite popular with the young women. She becomes involved with the Rose Bride duels after trying to defend her roommate Anthy Himemiya, but is unaware of the mystery and power behind the duels leading her into harm’s way many times. Utena’s ideals of justice, equality, and compassion ultimately lead her to victory time and time again as she never backs down from a challenge. Her relationship with Anthy is questionable at best as it tip-toes the line between friend and something more.

Anthy Himemya

shoujo kakumei utena anthy

Voice Actor :Yuriko Fuchizaki

Anthy is the sister of the school’s chairmen, Akio Ohtori, and is quite reserved in nature. As the Rose Bride, she often allows those who have won her to do what they will and in the process is often abused and mistreated which forces Utena to feel the need to protect her. Anthy has a hidden power that lies within her that can only be drawn forth by her master during duels. The current master will call forth the power to revolutionize the world and a sword will be drawn from Anthy’s chest. Her personality reflects whatever her current owner desires, but deep down she is truly a spiteful person. Her true backstory lies in an age old fairy tale passed down through the centuries. Can she really be considered Utena’s friend?

Akio Ohtori

shoujo kakumei utena Akio

Voice Actor :Jurota Kosugi

Akio is the acting chairman of Ohtori Academy and is engaged to another, but becomes very interested in Utena romantically despite the age difference though there may be ulterior motives involved. He’s rich and owns a convertible used throughout the series and although he may come across as a white knight, his goals are quite dubious. Secretly, he controls Anthy from the shadows and manipulates the Student Council to his whims, even working with Touga and Saonji towards the end. Akio is charming and it’s difficult for many of the other characters to imagine he has anything but the purist intentions, but beneath that prince-like exterior lies something truly sinister.

Touga Kiryuu

shoujo kakumei utena Touga

Voice Actor :Takehito Koyasu

As the acting President of the Student Council, Touga often gets what he wants. He is well known as the school’s resident playboy and can be often seen with a cell phone in hand talking to another woman. As a child, Touga was unable to save a young girl from her suffering and witnessed Akio do what he could not. As such, Touga is perpetually jealous of the power Akio holds and agrees to work with Akio in order to obtain that power for himself. At times, Touga can be cruel and manipulative, playing head games tih Utena and even his own sister Nanami, but near the end he finally realizes Akio’s end game and attempts to thwart his plans. Touga may be a playboy, but he certainly isn’t lacking in the intelligence department.

Nanami Kiryuu

shoujo kakumei utena nanami kiryuu

Voice Actor :Yuri Shiratori

Brother-obsessed Nanami is hard to take seriously for the first half of the series. She is often the butt of jokes and tends to get herself into the weirdest situations. Despite her over-exaggerated, valley-girl persona lies someone with real issues and she eventually becomes a voice of reason. Nanami has a brother complex for older brother, Touga, and uses her position as leverage to gain popularity with the other young women at the school. She often barges into situations without thinking through her entire plan only to have it blow up in her face. Nanami is the ultimate mean girl.

Revolutionary Girl Utena Review

One of many reasons Revolutionary Girl Utena stands out above the rest is its ability to defy all expectations. As a magical girl anime, there are certain criteria that viewers expect such as transformation sequences and formulaic episode patterns, but Utena not only embraces these trite tropes that fans have come to love and turned them on their heads, transforming the series into something with a much deeper meaning than “Love Triumphs Over All!” The basic premise of the series is a familiar one to most anime fans. Utena is the popular girl in her middle school who becomes wrapped up in a series of duels and fights to protect what she holds dear in an attempt to “save” the world while also seeking to find someone she briefly remembers from her childhood. The only item guiding her is a ring she received with a rose crest that leads her to Ohtori Academy which has a similar mark as their school’s crest. The first arc of the story focuses on school life and explaining the purpose of the Rose Tournament with its duels while also introducing the audience to the main characters and their various backstories. In the beginning the audience meets Utena who was saved by a prince as a child. He explained to her that if she never lost her noble spirit, she too could become a prince one day. As a result, Utena became so impressed and infatuated by the encounter that she took on the persona of a prince from that day forward even going so far as to wear a boy’s uniform to school and to play scrimmage games of basketball with the boy’s team. Despite technically being a girl, many of the students’ female populace adores her. Her best friend Wakaba can often be found nearby and often teases about the prospect of marrying her best friend. During the first episode, new dormitory assignments are revealed and Utena receives a letter telling her to report to some of the more abandoned buildings on campus. Upon arrival, she is met only with quiet corridor as she attempts to find who she could be living with in this odd assignment. She eventually finds her room and notices another name attached to the door besides her own. Walking into the room, she is greeted with fresh tea and a smiling Anthy and Chuchu her tiny monkey-like creature. From here on, Utena’s life is turned upside down as the Student Council reveals themselves as duelists fighting for the power to change the world. The Rose Tournament is set up by a mysterious man only known by the alias “End of the World”. The rest of the first arc involves a jealous Nanami and determined Touga who is upset his normal charms have no effect on Utena whatsoever. Anthy and Utena’s “friendship” blossoms as the duels become more heated and Utena discovers that Anthy’s role as the Rose Bride leaves her open to abuse.

Revolutionary Girl Utena wallpaper 02

Utena takes it upon herself to protect Anthy from those who would use her as a pawn in their attempts to gain the power to revolutionize the world. When asked what she would do with the power, Utena responds candidly by saying, “Nothing.” She understands that there are reasons why the world is the way it is and without the bad experiences, no one would ever grow. The Black Rose Saga is the second arc in the series which involves heavier character development. Each of the duelists on the Student Council carries great secrets involving other students who are remain close and a dark force named Souji Mikage prays on these fears in order to suit his own purposes. Posing as a genius councilor, Mikage calls in these students and gives them false rose crests which allow them to duel against Utena. Through these duels, each of the Student Council’s members are expanded upon and their personal stakes in the tournament are revealed. While Utena ultimately defeats all of the fake duelists, the arc serves an important purpose in developing its existing characters and introducing Akio Ohtori who will become the pinnacle of conflict during the last arc of the series. Many fans dispute whether there are three or four arcs in the series, but for the purposes of making this plot easier to understand I will split it into three just as the box sets have. The last and final arc delves deeper in the mythos of the world surrounding the school and reveals a deep personal struggle within Utena. Akio, Anthy’s brother, invites the two girls to live in the school’s tower with him and naturally both oblige.

Revolutionary Girl Utena wallpaper 01

Seeing as Akio is the school’s chairman, he holds much influence over the school and uses it to weasel himself into Utena’s good graces. As Utena and Akio become more involved with each other, Utena is torn between her commitment to Anthy and becoming a prince or her feelings for Akio. Utena’s dark past rears its ugly head once more as she is haunted by images of her parents’ funeral and what she witnessed after trapping herself inside their coffin. She vaguely remembers the prince guiding her out and leading her to a most horrible scene. A young girl is repeatedly stabbed by millions of swords repeatedly as a sacrifice to save her brother, the prince, from the countless demands from the girls of the world. She becomes a witch and seals him away forever, leaving only a dark and sinister man in place of a prince. The prince explains to Utena that if she truly wished to save this young girl from her suffering, she would have to become a prince to believe in. Utena is truly unique. Unlike other magical girl anime such as Cardcaptor Sakura and Sailor Moon, our main heroin is truly a tomboy with no interest in anything girly of the sort. She’s headstrong, doesn’t back away from a challenge, and has genuine flaws. She knows her responsibilities and does not run away. I love this series because I can see a lot of my personal struggles in Utena as she constantly questions herself, wondering what actually makes up a “girl” and should she fit the mold expected of her. At one point, she wonders if she may have actually fallen in love with Akio and her demeanor changes drastically as she ditches her usual uniform and abandons the ring give to her as a sign of her quest. The other characters take note and realize that this is not the real Utena. Can she be a girl and a prince? She finally decides that the answer is that she can and that she should remain true to who she is because changing for society’s expectations can only hurt yourself and others. Japan as a country lacks much of the individuality that other more Western countries pride themselves on. Outsiders are often shunned, so an anime like Utena is actually quite surprising given the topics and material covered. Utena as a main character is a breath of fresh air in a sea of cookie-cutter magical girls.

1. The Student Council

shoujo kakumei utena highlight1 student council

This organization is only the governing body of the student population on the surface. Its true purpose is to organize the duelists into one place so that the Tournament can be kept a secret. The group has various members from all grades and personality types, but it is unknown how or why each of them were chose to take place in the duels. Once Utena appears, she poses a challenge to each of their goals.

2. The Black Rose Duelists

shoujo kakumei utena highlight2

While not exactly a united front, Mikage is the sole manipulator of those known as the Black Rose Duelists. He uses his talents and power as a counselor to brainwash those who seek help from him into dueling Utena. His end goal is to win Anthy so that he may kill her and install a new Rose Bride so that he may save a sick, young boy with no hope for treatment.

3. The Drama Club

shoujo kakumei utena highlight3 dramaclub3

A mysterious presence throughout the series, this group helps the story move along by adding extra context to the story through shadows and puppetry. While only seen in person from behind once, their identities are never revealed.

For those who love a good magical girl show, you are in for one wild ride and do not expect the usual fluff. Fans of mystery and suspense will be happy as well as those who love fantasy and fairy-tales. One this if for certain, those who watch the show remain fans for life. This is once series that is a must see for anime fans both young and old.

Uta no☆Prince-sama♪ Maji Love 1000% has a lot to offer as a show. It follows a likable, determined heroine as she navigates the romantic and academic struggles of attending a performing arts school, following her dreams of being a composer. It's visually stunning, and features a cast of colorful, engaging characters. As an anime that centers around music, it also features a high-quality original soundtrack. The harem anime is a tried and true plot formula. Traditionally these series are aimed at a male audience, featuring a male protagonist surrounded by a cast of uniquely charming female characters. In the last few years, harem anime aimed at a female audience, more commonly referred to as "reverse-harem anime" have picked up popularity. Many of these are based on visual novels, and Uta no☆Prince-sama♪Maji Love 1000% is no exception. As a fan of an emerging genre, it can be hard to pin down more series that have similar elements. The first person she encounters is a boy who calls himself Orion, who appears to be invisible to everyone else. This anime features a cast of bishounen, a tenacious female protagonist, and a dose of humor similar to Uta no☆Prince-sama♪ Maji Love 1000%. Another similarity is that over the course of one day, the main character’s life is turned on its head. Ema’s life is pretty average. Average, that is, until her mother re-marries, bringing thirteen new brothers into her life. To make matters more complicated, the series follows the blossoming romantic tension between Ema and her new in-laws, and the drama that ensues.

Luckily she has the support of nine elemental guardians to aid her on her quest. Can she rise to the challenge that has been set before her and save the Cosmos of the Holy Beast? The Vision of Escaflowne Preview / Plot (No Spoilers)

Escaflowne made its debut on Fox Kids back in the late 90’s and acted as a gateway anime for many who had never been familiar with the genre before. One of those kids was me. Unfortunately, Fox was forced to shut the program down when the action became too violent and uneditable leaving many yearning for an ending. This was a blessing in disguise because it forced kids to seek out the original unedited series, which was much better. The story feature Hitomi Kanzaki, a typical high school girl with high school crushes. One day she discovers her main crush Amano will be moving away soon. Before he leaves, she wants to beat her personal sprint record in front of him. She meets him late at night at her high school track and gives him her pendant which can strangely swing in time. If she beats her record, she wishes to have a kiss as a reward. The timer starts and she immediately heads towards the finish line only to be stopped midway by a strange boy carrying a sword. A dragon soon follows him and they fight, causing Hitomi and her friends to get in the middle of the battle. Suddenly, Hitomi has a vision of the dragon slicing the boy from behind and she calls out to him. He manages to dodge the tail swipe and counterattacks the dragon’s soft belly resulting in death. The strange boy is then transported back to his world via a pale blue light and Hitomi is dragged along with him as Amano reaches out to her. The only thing she managed to grab was her pendant in his hand. From here on, Hitomi is launched into the world of Gaia where the Earth hangs in their sky. She is caught up in the world’s politics and battles due to her fortune telling abilities and other strange powers. The strange boy from before is revealed to be a prince named Van Fanel, whose country is destroyed by a shady empire called Zaibach. Zaibach believes they can bring peace to the world by altering fate and using technology, but the key to unlock this power lies in Van’s gyumelef, a giant mecha, Escaflowne that can transform into a dragon. Together, they gain allies in the neighboring country Asturia and fight off the Zaibach Empire from destroying the world.

Who does The Vision of Escaflowne cater to?

One of the best features of Escaflowne lies in its ability to attract anime fans from many different genres. Shoujo lovers will enjoy the subtle love triangle between Van, Allen, and Hitomi. Shounen fans will love the battle scenes and overall cast of the show as well as the rich backstories for each main character. For mech fans, the show has ancient machines called Guymelefs that are the source of most battles throughout the series. They are basically ancient mechs with swords. The story takes place on an alternate planet from Earth where kings and queens still reign and technology has not yet taken over, which fantasy fans will find their love. Hitomi’s ability to predict the future and the presence of ancient Atlantis should draw supernatural fans as well. Escaflowne is quite a well-rounded anime.

What's so appealing about this piece of work.

Typical female lead, she actually thinks about the consequences of her actions and isn’t afraid to get her own hands dirty or tell it like it is. She’s attractive to both men and women and someone the audience can really relate to. The story is equally amazing and well thought out, referencing ancient mythology from all over the world making audiences want to research in order to get more from the plot. Of course, the action sequences are absolutely gorgeously animated as well. Escaflowne also features a killer VA cast along with music composed by Yoko Kanno.

The Vision of Escaflowne Main Characters List

Hitomi Kanzaki

Tenkuu no Escaflowne hitomi

Voice Actor :Maaya Sakamoto

At her high school, Hitomi is a track star whose best friend, Yukari, manages the team. She is often sought out by her classmates for tarot card readings since most of her predictions are spot on. She has a crush on a fellow team mate, Amano, and owns a pendant give to her by her grandmother. When she is suddenly transported to Gaea, she realizes her powers are magnified tenfold and she is essential to unlocking the power of the Escaflowne. With her newfound responsibilities, Hitomi treads lightly and carefully considers all of her decisions while trying to stay on the morally right path. Hitomi is competitive and contemplative. As a friend, she will do whatever she can in her power to help and support you. Since she’s still a teenage girl, she does succumb to her raging emotions quite often, but she is quick to admit her mistakes despite the guilt she feels afterwards.

Van Fanel

tenkuu no escaflowne van fanel

Voice Actor : Tomokazu Seki

As a child, Van looked up and respected his older brother Folken, but when he disappeared to kill a dragon, Van inherited the responsibility of becoming heir to the throne. He often trained with his sword master, Balgus, until it was time for him to follow his brother’s footsteps and become King through the rite of dragon slaying. During his battle with the beast, Van teleported to Earth where he met Hitomi and accidentally brought her back with him. He vowed to return her to her world and during his coronation ceremony, Zaibach made a move to attack his country, Fanelia. Driven to a wall, Van activated Fanelia’s secret weapon, Escaflowne, in a last ditch effort to fight, but ultimately resulting in his retreat. Van is stubborn in his beliefs and often thinks he knows best. As a prince, many would try to take advantage of his status and so he is often wary of strangers resulting in a bad first impression between him and Hitomi on their meeting. Despite these setbacks, Van is loyal and will often recklessly put himself in danger if it means saving the lives of others.

Allen Schezar

tenkuu no escaflowne allen schezar

Voice Actor :Shin-ichiro Miki

At a young age Allen was gifted with the talent of swordsmanship, but it wasn’t until Balgus found him that he really excelled and managed to raise himself up to the level of Knight Caeli of Asturia. Allen is the quintessential knight and is often renowned for his chivalry, good looks, and charm. His swordsmanship is top notch and he also pilots his own guymelef, the Scherezade. Allen is suspicious of the Zaibach Empire from the start, but is limited on the course of action he should take since Asturia and Zaibach have formed an alliance. After meeting Van though, Allen becomes bolder in his stance against the dark empire. Allen’s personality suits him well as a knight. He is fiercely loyal to those he serves, but is not afraid to stand up for what he thinks is right. He believes in fighting only if it is necessary and retreating do avoid further loss. He is intelligent and able to form meticulous battle strategies by analyzing the strengths and weaknesses of their foe. As a man, he is haunted by his past every time he sees Princess Millerna.

Folken Fanel

tenkuu no escaflowne folken fanel

Voice Actor : Jouji Nakata

Folken is Van’s older brother who never returned from the rite of dragon slaying. It was rumored that he had been killed, but it is now clear that he survived thanks to Zaibach’s sorcerers. He lost an arm in the battle and it was replaced by a mechanical prototype. Zaibach preyed on Folken’s wish for his brother to grow up in a peaceful world and manipulated him into becoming a sorcerer himself and later their Strategos. He fights against his brother believing he will ultimately save Van from the harsh realities of the world. He is extremely misguided, but has a fairly pure heart. He is mostly silent and exudes an air of intelligence and prestige. Folken is also one of the lucky few who are granted speaking privileges to Emperor Dornkirk as he often discusses their future plans together. He has a fierce love for his brother and even more so, Gaea. He only wishes to stop the hatred of the world before it ends up like the fabled Atlantis.

Dilandau Albatou

tenkuu no escaflowne dilandau albatou

Voice Actor :Minami Takayama

Dilandau is the most unstable member of the Zaibach Empire and heads the Dragon Slayers, a guymelef team whose sole purpose is to capture Escaflowne and Van Fanel. Their goal becomes quite complicated once Dilandau begins to hold a personal grudge against Van for scratching his face during battle. Folken has a hard time keeping control of Dilandau and often has to reprimand him like a child. His past is fuzzy and unknown. Insanity would be the first word to come to most people’s minds when having to describe Dilandau. He is blood-thirsty and doesn’t mind taking the most violent course of action in order to have his fun. He is cruel even to his fellow Dragon Slayers and uses them as servants when they are not in their guymelefs. Once he has a target to hate, that person better watch out because Dilandau will almost become possessed and nothing will stop him until his target is dead.

The Vision of Escaflowne Review

A classic amongst most anime circles, The Vision of Escaflowne “spares no expense” in the famous words of John Hammond from Jurassic Park. Everything from the writing to the animation is on point. The art style is unique from many anime from the mid ninties era. Most notably, the character’s noses tend to be a bit pointier and protrude out from the character’s faces more so than usual. The designs did tend to scare of some fans, but I personally think the style is executed quite tastefully. The overall animation of the show is gorgeous and fluid with battle scenes avoiding the typical still slide syndrome many of today’s anime suffer from. Watching Escaflowne on blu ray is absolutely gorgeous. Animation isn’t the only thing the show got right though. The soundtrack is timeless with amazing vocals and mood setting instrumentals that complement the tone of the anime expertly. Escaflowne is actually Maaya Sakamoto’s first major anime work, having sung the opening theme and did the voice work for the main character Hitomi. Yoko Kanno felt she was perfect and this star studded team has gone on to provide music for many other anime including Wolf’s Rain and more famously, Macross Frontier. The most important aspect of the series, the plot, is well-written and thought out by Kazuki Akane who has also worked on Turn A Gundam, Noein, and Ergo Proxy. The characters are believable and all suffer from their own personal character flaws. Thanks to excelled voice work, the characters come alive to tell a rich story set in an alternate world where magic and nature dominate over technology.

The Vision of Escaflowne blu-ray

When I first watched Escaflowne as a preteen, I worried that Hitomi would become the typical Mary-Sue figure that most anime perpetuate, but I was actually pleasantly surprised. Hitomi is not well liked by many of the main characters at the beginning. Van believes she is cursed and refuses to associate with her, while Merle, his childhood friend, believes she is fighting for Van’s affections. Neither of these things are true and Hitomi becomes deeply depressed as any other normal human being would after being transported to a strange land with no one to provide comfort and guarantee safe passage. Things become even more complicated once the castle is attacked and Van is forced to flee with Hitomi and the Escaflowne. Hitomi predicts the whole thing through a vision she is given and becomes hysterical. Of course, no one believes her and she is even further alienated. Hitomi doesn’t gain the trust and affections at the get go which is quite refreshing after watching anime from similar genres. She earns these rights once she proves she can be of use and is also reliable. There ARE many characters throughout the series that are interested in Hitomi, but these encounters seem more natural than forced. Since she is an outsider, it seems plausible that she would be considered a threat or prized at a high value for her unique looks. Hitomi is supported by several other main characters that allow her to deep dig deep inside herself. Van is the most notable. His stubborn pride prevents him from seeing clearly and so he often dismisses Hitomi’s legitimate concerns. Once Hitomi’s predictions become increasingly accurate, Van is forced to question himself and makes a complete 180. He then relies too much on Hitomi’s powers, only seeing her as a tool which eventually hurts Hitomi quite deeply.

The Vision of Escaflowne wallpaper

The pain Van feels is quite real and reminds many of their own emotional teenage years where down was up and up was down. Van has to deal with his surging emotions while also shouldering the responsibility of leading a nation. He makes many mistakes throughout the journey, but once he begins to accept himself as he is, he also begins to accepting others for who they are. While the characters give life to the plot, the backdrop they’re set against provides the means to create a wonderful story with a strong backbone. The people live simple lives in harmony with nature, but Zaibach threatens that peace. Humans are imperfect beings and are often prone to disagreements. Unfortunately, wars do break out and there are always heavy losses after a victor has been declared. Zaibach sets out to harvest peoples’ hopes and dreams to create a world where war is obsolete. Zaibach’s Emperor Dornkirk, who is revealed to be Sir Isaac Newton, uses fate alteration technology he has research for decades in order to manipulate Gaea into a world where everyone’s wishes come true. Unfortunately, his plan backfires since people’s wishes with contradict each other and war becomes the final outcome. Van and Hitomi are able to put an end to Dornkirk by breaking his Fate Prognostication System with the power of their love. The message is clear, humans are individuals with their own opinions and dreams. Not everyone agrees with each other, but the answer is not violence through ignorance. Instead, a mutual respect should be practiced in order to enhance the world through different perspectives. If only this message were practiced more often in the real world.

1. Fanelia

tenkuu no escaflowne highlight1

Fanelia is a small country set in a valley surround by dragons, so it’s no surprise that they worship the beasts to keep them safe. Their main trade is agriculture and they seldom are involved in wars. Unfortunately, the country houses the Escaflowne which is the key to unlocking the power of Atlantis causing Zaibach to gain interest. The country is burnt to the ground in their efforts to locate the Guymelef. With the help of the military, a good portion of Fanelia’s citizens survived the attack and await the return of King Van so that they may rebuild their homeland.

2. Asturia

tenkuu no escaflowne highlight2

Home to both Allen and Millerna, Asturia is a prosperous nation – housing several trade ports and a large army. The current king, Aston, formed the nation by appealing to several differing trading villages to form a single country. His idea worked, and Asturia is thriving. King Aston knowledge is unfortunately limited to profit. He aligns himself with Zaibach in hopes that profits will increase via Zaibach’s usage of their valuable trade ports. Since Aston produced no sons and his two eldest daughters were married off to other nations, Millerna is the sole heir to the throne and her intended is the son of a prosperous merchant.

3. Zaibach

tenkuu no escaflowne highlight3

Zaibach is a relatively new nation which began with Newton’s ability to inspire the people around him. As he grew, his ideas and opinions became darker and darker and his Empire continued to grow by wiping out all the natural forests surrounding the area. The capital is cold and emits an eerie green glow upon nightfall. The country deals in the black market across Gaea and is well known for their technology and fate research. Innocent children have been known to be used as subjects in their experiments, but no one in the higher echelon seems to view this as a problem.

The Vision of Escaflowne has it all and can serve as the ultimate gateway anime. The plot is rich with references from ancient mythology from all over the globe and the overall story harbors a lesson anyone can get behind. The characters do not succumb to stereotype syndrome, and there are giant, ancient mechs that fight during every battle. Romance, action, and adventure, The Vision of Escaflowne can suck even the biggest anime naysayer in.

Innocent! That's the perfect word for describing Gakuen Alice, because it revolves around the story of an innocent grade schooler, Sakura Mikan, whose greatest wish is to be with her friends. Through her innocence, she is able to change lives. This anime has so much to offer from the cute magical girl-like plot to a dark secret that controls the everyday lives of these Alices! You can't help but love this anime, but of course, where do you go when you're done? Well, let me just name a few similar anime you may want to add on your list!

1. Kodomo no Omocha (Kodocha/Child’s Toy)

kodomo no omocha dvd
[Information episodes=" 102 " aired=" April 1996 – March 1998 "]

Kodomo no Omocha is about a young girl named Kurata Sana, who is the star of her own hit TV comedy “Child’s Toy,” yet while her TV show is all laughs, her real life school story is full of chaos as the children run the classroom and torment the teacher. Fed up with her school life, Sana stands up to the leader, Hayama Akito, but there is so much more than she understands to this world. Watching Kodomo no Omocha is like watching a young, naïve child grow up and learn the harsh reality of the world. Mikan, who is naïve, also had to learn that not everything is as it seems, yet both anime are still very cute on the surface with many humorous moments. Despite being young children, the main characters of both series have a lot going on in their lives. It is fun to see their innocent sides, but both anime also show as they grow up as well.

2. Special A (S.A.)

special a DVD
[Information episodes=" 24 " aired=" April 2008 – September 2008 "]

Special A is such a cute anime featuring Hanazono Hikari, a girl who wants nothing more in life than to surpass her rival, Takishima Kei. She has always come in second to him from wrestling as children to test grades in high school. She has even followed Kei to Hakusenkan where she has risen to be one of the top students and a member of the Special class. At this school, we follow the hijinks of the Special class as they enjoy their freedom in this school life comedy. This anime is quite cute. You can’t help but crack up at the silliness amongst the elite students at Hakusenkan. This is a very light story with a lovable main character whose ignorance and obliviousness may make you laugh out loud or cry out in frustration. Hikari is very similar to Mikan because she possesses a child-like innocence that makes her the pivotal piece amongst everyone else.

3. Fruits Basket

Fruits Basket
[Information episodes=" 26 " aired=" July 2001 – December 2001 "]

Fruits Basket centers around Honda Tohru, a young girl who comes across her classmate Souhma Yuuki, while walking to school from her makeshift home in the woods. After a devastating landslide, the Souhma family offer to house her while she waits for her own home to be renovated. The house is full of men, but that is not the only problem. She soon discovers the secret of the Souhma family: they turn into animals of the Chinese Zodiac when embraced by members of the opposite sex! It is not as funny as it sounds, since there is a cruel and dark history behind each member of the Souhma family. This anime is quite adorable, much like Gakuen Alice, but there is an underlying darker tone that you do not notice at first. Magic is part of the plot, but it is merely something that helps build the plot and character histories without overshadowing a lot of the aspects of the anime. If you are looking for a shoujo anime with a darker undertone, this may be up your alley!

Everything has gone downhill in recent years and attendees are few. At the end of the date, he discovers that he is the only one that the princess of Amagi Brilliant Park, Princess Latifah, trusts to help the park. While he may be crass and clash with the other employees, but he is their only hope! Seiya is much like Mikan in which he thinks he is a normal being, but in actuality, he is the only hope for this park full of fairies. Seiya does not have any magical abilities, but he has the heart and the ability that these fairies need to survive, which is just what Mikan has. There is a lot of silliness and although the humor can be ecchi, this is an anime that is worth watching. Just do not expect a lot of the innocence that you have seen in Gakuen Alice. This is not a shoujo anime!
