Quintessential to the shoujo genre, the tale of a confused girl in love is more often than not a cookie-cutter storyline. With Momo’s love oscillating between two boys, this anime digs deeper into the lives of four high schoolers and their journey through friendship, love and heartbreak.

Presented with an exaggerated reality of high school drama and love, you’ll be addicted for sure. If you are unsuccessful in escaping from the claws of the love/hate shoujo anime, here is a line-up of anime similar to Peach Girl.

Hopefully, these 6 shoujo heroines do justice in their hair-pulling dramatic love story that we can’t seem to stay away from.

1. Lovely Complex

lovely complex dvd
[Information episodes=" 24 " aired=" April 2007 - September 2007 "]

Lovely Complex tells the tale of Koizumi Risa, who falls in love with a boy way shorter than her, Ootani Atsushi. Unfortunately paired together as a comedic duo by their peers, Risa struggles to move their relationship out of the friend-zone. Adapted from a famous shoujo manga and trailing its live-action movie, this romantic comedy anime, with a taste of charming Osaka-ben, has captured the hearts of many viewers.

Similarities between Lovely Complex and Peach girl mainly fall on the lead females’ insecurities. While Momo is shy about her dark skin, Risa is equally resentful of her tall stature. Both of them try to overcome their flaws and end up stronger characters than before. As cliche as it may seem, it’s a story of typical insecure high schooler attempting to find her confidence. It certainly brings back many memories of one’s own high school experience.

Lovely Complex is definitely a must watch if you have enjoyed Peach Girl, as it is definitely not lacking in the love department. It is a shoo-in for tugging at your heartstrings as you cheer for Risa to finally get with the right guy!

2. Skip Beat!

skip beat DVD
[Information episodes=" 25 " aired=" October 2008 - March 2009 "]

Skip Beat! is one of those shoujo anime that continuously increases the lead female’s favourability with audiences. Unlike the rest, Mogami Kyouko is not a weepy love-obsessed girl that spirals down into an eternal weepy drama. Although, she begins with getting her heart broken by her childhood friend, Fuwa Shoutaro. Throughout the anime she advances toward the path of vengeance and victory.

Nevertheless, the dose of drama and romance is equally strong in this anime with that of Peach Girl’s. With two boys accompanying her journey to stardom, Kyouko’s life is full of hurdles. Initially ditched by Shoutaro, Kyouko finds a way to show him who’s boss. In that process, she meets a new man, Tsuruga Ren, an annoyingly cold hottie that slowly (No joke: I mean a glacial pace) reveals his feelings for her.

Similarities between Momo and Kyouko mostly lie on their pendulum-esque love/hate relationship between the two men. As Momo faces the countless sabotages by Sae, Kyouko also encounters frustrations which leave audience hopelessly cheering for them.

3. Kaichou wa Maid-Sama!

Kaichou wa Maid-Sama dvd 2
[Information episodes=" 26 " aired=" April 2010 - September 2010 "]

Kaicho wa Maid-sama! is a story about Ayuzawa Misaki and Usui Takumi. This anime takes place in Seika High School, once an all-boy school but recently changed to a co-ed school. Due to the fact that the female popularity is a minority, Misaki takes up the job of revamping the school to allow female students to feel safe. Having such a hard exterior, she secretly works at a Maid café. Unfortunately, Takumi finds out and keeps it to himself . Through time, he takes a liking to Misaki.

Originally a manga and now a famous anime in the shoujo genre, Misaki is similar to Momo because they both have loud and strong personalities. They both are independent and totally different from other girls in their high school. Takumi is similar to Okayasu Kairi as they are known for being the popular boys in school. Even though they both are very mischievous, they always have good intentions and in the end, are always there for the main female character.

4. Fruits Basket

Fruits Basket
[Information episodes=" 26 " aired=" July 2001 - December 2001 "]

Inspired by the popular children’s game, Fruit Basket is a shoujo franchise that is positively received in the anime world. Although elements of fantasy set this anime apart from the rest, it still draws similar emotions of a comedic and dramatic love-story.

Fruits Basket is a story about Honda Tooru, who unexpectedly lives with two classmates; the cool Souma Yuki, and the abrasive Souma Kyou. In their new lives together, Tooru attempts to get closer to the two boys and discovers their hidden family secret: The boys cannot be hugged by the opposite sex unless they want to puff into their assigned zodiac animals.

The overlapping tropes of Peach Girl and Fruits Basket is the incessant cycle of heartbreak and restoration. This can get a little tiring for one’s poor soul, but the two anime are able to juggle the lead character’s happiness and sadness.

An additional side note, is the similarity of a sabotaging/ jealous character; Minagawa Motoko and Sae. They both add a little spice and drama to the lead protagonists’ love life.

5. Ao Haru Ride (Blue Spring Ride)

ao-haru-ride-DVD
[Information episodes=" 12 " aired=" July 2014 - September 2014 "]

Ao Haru Ride is a story between Futaba Yosioka and Kou Tanaka. Futaba is very pretty and is admired by loads of boys in junior high school. Because of that, many girls are jealous of her and Futaba is ostracised. So once she enters high school, she changes herself to be less ladylike in order to fit in with the other girls.

Just like Momo, they seek for others’ approval and are determined to changed themselves for others. Futaba has many friends who were her so-called good friend but soon reveal themselves to be total mean girls. This is just like Sae pretending to be Momo’s best friend. After a while, a new student called Kou Tanaka transfers to Futaba’s school and Futaba finds out that he was actually her junior high school crush. But now Kou does not have feelings for her anymore.

In the next semester, Kou and Futaba wind up in the same class and both of them become class president and co-class president. Slowly, throughout the anime, Kou eventually recovers his feelings for Futaba.

This anime is a great display of the constant misunderstandings of one’s feelings, which is common in shoujo dramas. You’re certainly in for a wild ride of emotions (pun intended).

6. Saiunkoku Monogatari (The Story of Saiunkoku)

Saiunkoku Monogatari dvd
[Information episodes=" 39 " aired=" April 2006 - February 2007 "]

Saiunkoku Monogatari is set in an ancient mythological land. The story is about a descendent of a noble family Shuurei Hong (Kou) who has fallen to hard times. Shuurei is a strong and loud woman just like Momo. They both work hard to get what they want. Shuurei wants to work for the government with the new emperor, but in that era it is forbidden for a woman to take up that post. The new emperor, Ryuuki Shi is also similar to Kairi as he’s known for being very laid back and seemingly uninterested in important matters.

However, they both prove otherwise in the development of the anime. One day, Shuurei is offered to work for the emperor as his consort to teach the emperor in being a better ruler for a period of 6 months. Shuurei accepts. Through the anime, Ryuuki also flaunts over his love for men but despite that, he and Shuurei slowly grow fond of each other.

Loyal to the harem genre, Shuurei has other love interests which contribute to the rollercoaster ride of emotions. However, we can all agree that a shoujo anime is incomplete without a wavering heart heroine. This anime is sure to give reminiscence to Peach Girl’s romantic havoc.

I would hardly think there are similar anime to Amnesia, given its premise, which is rather... unique. Honestly, I prefer the descriptive term, ‘distinct’, because I will be hard-pressed to find any close to similar, which happens to be my job. Tough luck. But surprise, there just might be, some interesting ones, on par with quality too. In essence though, similarities can indeed be joined, considering the gist of Amnesia as a Reverse Harem style and type. Along that note, upon a genre I have only ever been familiar with the "reverse" side of it (see what I did there?), let's find some Reverse Harem anime similar to Amnesia. Since I missed the opportunity to go in-depth over what Amnesia really is about, besides mentioning it as a Reverse Harem anime, I will use the chance of introducing elements of it as we discuss those similar animes. But if there's anything to note, the show is in fact based on a Playstation Portable dating sims game, which really explains things. In fact, it explains it all. We understand now, why the weird, or ‘distinct’ premise, and the reason for its plot centred around a girl hooking up with some hot guys. And are there any other animes following the same idea? In fact, before we make mention of that, it seems the trail of origins for this rather mysterious (in a sense) anime, goes all the way back further, to its form as a Japanese visual novel series by Idea Factory. Does this explain anything, beyond the reason why it is the way it is? Are Japanese just creative, even over incredible (or incredulous) plot ideas? Whatever it is, we know the appeal of this will be for girls, and so this Recommendations' article will be aimed at that.

Amnesia's plot premise of having an amnesiac trying to recover her memories from interactions with other romantically-involved characters... is not entirely as ‘distinct’ as I have put. Yes, some other people have been crazy enough to think this up, even though it isn't that bad an idea really, just unique. In this case, being Golden Time, the main character is of the reverse gender, and so it is not exactly a Reverse Harem, but a Normal Harem, or whatever the equivalent for that is. They do share the same "golden" idea of a premise though, about amnesiacs or have you forgot ;)?

2. Fruits Basket

[Information episodes=" 26 " aired=" Jul 5, 2001 - Dec 27, 2001 "]

It seems it is proven my point on how unique the story of Amnesia is, given the difficulties I am facing in finding satisfactorily similar titles to it. So I have taken a dissection of the main themes, and by this thin association, have them related as "recommendations". With the second up, it is another Reverse Harem anime, Fruits Basket. This series have the same erotic arrangement of a Reverse Harem, lots of bishie men chasing the main character, who is in the best of descriptions, "shy". Or more flat-out without character, so if you want a Reverse Harem anime with the main character being "shy" but not boring, Fruits Basket is for you! In this case she is actually shy, and not no-life and no personality. And oh yeah, the premise of this is way cooler! Something about bishie-men transforming into Chinese Zodiac animals when they are hugged by the opposite sex. That is so...interestingly way out there, almost like Amnesia's but cuter.

3. Brothers Conflict

Brothers Conflict DVD
[Information episodes=" 12 " aired=" Jul 2, 2013 - Sep 17, 2013 "]

I shall refer another anime based on the same theme, again. Called sensibly Brothers Conflict, we can only imagine that the conflict in question is the contest of love for the one individual that is the main character; it seems also that this anime has an incest theme. Simply because the girl is also their sister by marriage of their parents, and that is why I used the term incest for this anime. This is as standard as any Reverse Harem type anime, and the timeworn question it poses and asks: who gets the girl? For the Normal Harem type, I believe it is: can the guy get all the girls? So apart from that incest theme, there are strong similarities between the two anime, both originating first as visual novels. Also, if you like boring, flat female leads, both animes have that, together with the usual plot of lots of hot bishies falling for her, not to mention that plot device we call a spiritual aide, protecting and advising her.

4. Miracle Train: Welcome to the Oedo line

miracle train dvd
[Information episodes=" 13 " aired=" Oct 5, 2009 - Dec 28, 2009 "]

Miracle Train has many similar aspects to Amnesia, one of them of course being both Reverse Harem, but also on the supernatual feel, for the Miracle Train being, well, the train itself, and how only the team of bishies, a host club of the train in question, has the ability to even see it in the first place, guiding those worried and troubled girls on a ride they will never forget. Not what you are thinking though, basically the host club is some sort of psychotherapy team. For Amnesia, you already know it as a one-dimensional girl, that speaks nothing beyond short sentences with a gasp at the end, who became an amnesiac after colliding with some supernatual spirit. So besides similarity on feel, the pacing of the story is very similar too, which I imagine as how each episode for both animes begins seemingly and entirely unrelated, with little true plot or character progress, although they both save themselves and get interesting by the 6th episode and yonder. The difference is in how Miracle Train doesn't revolve around a single female lead, with the bishounen of the host club interacting with the many women that board the train, and in Amnesia, the female lead passes through different alternate universes for each of her bishie encounter, all of which are represented by card suits, from Heart, Spade, Clover, Diamond and Joker. Miracle Train too has the bonus of introducing the scenic elements of the route the miracle train travels on, which is the Oedo-line, I believe. I suppose the creators thought that a train-line with a host club is a winning combo.

So far we have covered incest, host club in train stations with similar pacing, another anime about amnesia, and the last being about Chinese Zodiac animals, all of which have the bonus of being Reverse Harem animes at the same time. It is just so that I found another unlikely theme, one of confusion. It is not exactly that surprising, given there is only so much you can differentiate the plot of a Reverse Harem type anime. All the guys want a piece of the action, which is basically as normal and close to reality as it gets. Turning out that this is the fantasy of a lot of girls sure help us otakus to dream on that, so it appeals to both guys and gals. According to what is similar between the two, is the theme of confusion, partly mistaken as mystery, that you only get the idea of both plots at the end of the series. In light of that, I only recommend this anime, K, because quote for truth, "Worth watching if you like to get confused." Which is the strangest promotional caption I have ever heard.

[Information episodes=" 13 " aired=" Apr 4, 2013 - Jun 27, 2013 "]

At the sixth and last recommendation, I will end it with one last standard Reverse Harem anime, as classic and typical as it gets. It even shows in the name: it mentions the word prince. That's bound to get any girl wet. And just to show the quality of this Reverse Harem anime, it has been described as "just absolutely fun to watch". Both of the female leads are almost entirely emotionless, with the bishie guys all after her. In fact, they work along the same plot mechanic, with each guy having an episode or arc just devoted to them, and to her as well of course. It takes two to tango, although we can have more than just two persons of course, but then that will turn into a shounen genre, instead of a shoujo, if you know what I mean?

Amnesia wallpaper 2

Ok I will get to you on the verdict, but for a person who evinces quality in everything is that this anime is not at the level of perfection, that everyone should desire from everything at all times, for the "Evolution of the Race". Not the Japanese race though, the Human one. For reasons being a few, one of them the utterly emotionless main female character, which does hurt the plot a bit, even though it does evolve in the end to be quite an interesting one, with a mysterious suspense thrown in that breaks it even as a decent anime eventually, when it does get interesting further down the episodes. Which according to many reviews, is what got them viewing the anime Amnesia to its end, and not due to the romance factor at all, if it was ever apparent. Do not forget to comment below!

Magic Knight Rayearth Preview/Plot (No Spoilers)

In the mid-90’s, prominent manga group CLAMP decided to create a magical girl show that is a cut away from the block of the usual mahou shoujo anime like the iconic Bishoujo Senshi Sailor Moon. Dubbing their creation with the eponymous title Magic Knight Rayearth, the all-female manga group managed to give birth to arguably one of the most deconstructed, gritty magical girl show in the 90’s.

The plot of Magic Knight Rayearth involves a number of tried and tested anime tropes. SThe story starts off when three young girls get mysteriously summoned to the land of Cephiro as the titular magic knights. Upon arriving on the alien land, they find themselves thrust with the task of rescuing the planet’s PIllar, Princess Emeraude, who has been abducted by the dark high priest Zagato. Guided by the mysterious being called Mokona, and imbibed with their respective element-based magic, the three girls begin an adventure that will change their

Who does Magic Knight Rayearth cater to?

When CLAMP was conceptualizing the story of Magic Knight Rayearth, they wanted to create a series that incorporated a number of elements from numerous anime genres. In this regard, the group certainly delivered, for the anime features themes that would attract both the male and female demographic. Due to the show’s relatively gritty nature, the anime managed to garner a significant number of male fans. Female fans were quite abundant as well, mainly due to the feministic approach of the story.

Thus, if you enjoy magical girl anime that is absent of all the lacy, innocent, harmless action that is prevalent on more popular titles in the genre, then Magic Knight Rayearth may just be for you.

What’s so appealing about this piece of work?

Though the anime was created in the mid 90’s, viewers and critics to this day have stated that Magic Knight Rayearth is one of the rare examples of anime that has aged very well. Sure, the title does suffer from the common cost-cutting production techniques that were used during the time. However, the show’s charm lies not simply in its art, but in its heart.

With action sequences that will not look out of place in the frames of a purely shounen action anime, a huge cast of characters that grow and mature as the plot progresses, as well as plot twists that seem to come from more mature titles, Magic Knight Rayearth truly offers a really memorable ride from start to finish.

Magic Knight Rayearth Main Characters List

Hikaru Shidou

Shidou Hikaru Magic Knight Rayearth

Voice Actor :Shiina, Hekiru

Standing at a mere 145 cm tall, Hikaru is the least imposing of the three magic knights. However, what she lacks in size, she makes up for in sheer heart and determination. Though she can be quite innocent and naive at times, she nonetheless is very courageous; characteristics that make her the perfect match for her role as the Knight of Fire. Having a background in kendo, she can be a very fierce and unyielding fighter with the heart of a true warrior. She is also very protective of her friends, Umi and Fuu, whom she considers as her closest, most important friends, despite the fact that they were barely acquaintances before they were summoned to Cephiro.

Umi Ryuuzaki

Magic Knight Rayearth Ryuuzaki Umi

Voice Actor :Yoshida, Konami

The beautiful and elegant Umi is the Knight of Water, a title which sometimes contrasts with her assertive and skeptical personality. Born as the only daughter of prominent parents, she was raised as a winner, especially in her chosen sport, fencing. Though she can be quick-tempered at times, she is nonetheless a very loving girl who cares for her parents and her friends very much. Umi is known for being the most reluctant of the three magic knights after they were summoned to Cephiro. Her relatively frequent fights with their guide, Mokona, serve as the comic relief of the series at numerous points. Just like Hikaru however, she is fiercely protective of Hikaru and Fuu, eventually taking on the role of the big sister among the three.

Fuu Hououji

Magic Knight Rayearth Hououji Fuu

Voice Actor :Kasahara, Hiroko

The quiet and reserved Fuu stands as the voice of reason among the three magic knights. Highly intelligent and logical, she is known as the smartest of the three. Despite her high academic background however, Fuu is not physically weak, being the most formidable among the three magic knights when it comes to long range fighting. WIth her impeccable skills at the bow, she becomes the formidable Knight of Wind. The bespectacled Fuu has a tendency to doubt herself and her abilities, though she consistently proves her misconceptions wrong. Just like Hikaru and Umi, she is very protective of her friends, never hesitating to put herself in danger when it comes to protecting the people she considers as most important.

Magic Knight Rayearth Review

One of the things that has made Magic Knight Rayearth a very successful anime during its time was the fact that it was unafraid to introduce a number of very much experimental themes into a genre that has already been cemented by classics such as Sailor Moon. With the series’ creator, CLAMP’s decision to try another angle at the mahou shoujo genre, Magic Knight Rayearth has achieved something that very few anime hence has been able to reach. The first among these themes involves the magic knights themselves, which were presented as actual fighting leads through the course of the series. Whereas the typical mahou shoujo anime utilized girly female leads with equally girly female powers, the girls of Magic Knight Rayearth brandished swords, fought difficult hand to hand battles, and generally participated actively in every significant battle in the anime. This brings the anime to one of its most ironic themes - Realism. Despite the fact that the title of the anime itself has the word ‘magic’ in it, the series actually explored a number of very realistic themes. The theme of death, of grief and guilt, as well as the aftermath of tragedies are explored intensively, with viewers witnessing the consequence of actions initiated in previous episodes coming to life in the present.

Magic Knight Rayearth wallpaper

In fact, the anime’s realism is represented by one thing that very few mahou shoujo anime has even attempted before. Time and again, the titular magic knights are tasked to overcome a powerful adversary, and during the course of the fight, the viewers actually witness the girls bleed, and when they do, it is not the sugarcoated blood present in a child’s anime. It is blood as it is shed in the battlefield. The plot twists are also quite worthy of mention here as well, especially the great reveal of the first season’s conclusion, where the theme of life and love was fully explored in all its ugly detail. During the course of the first season, the viewer is expecting that the story is a typical save-the-princess type of tale, and for the most part, the plot does suggest it. Once Princess Emeraude reveals the real reason behind her decision to summon the magic knights to Cephiro however, the viewer will be see just how twisted the Pillar system of the planet really is. With her wish actually being to die in the hands of the magic knights, she becomes a key factor in the plot that propelled the growth of the three main characters. Of course, other factors, such as the addition of the Mashins, are also quite unique to an anime in the magical girl genre. Mashins are essentially elemental gods in the form of massive, powerful mecha that the magic knights control during their key fights. And mind you, the action sequences involving the Mashins are nothing to scoff at either, carrying the same level of quality and intensity as more popular mecha titles, such as Gundam Wing, which was released at around the same time. Lastly, and I couldn’t really help myself with this one, the series is actually very feministic. From the beginning of the plot until the climactic, satisfying end, the characters that move it are all female. The magic knights are characterized as young girls that are, though inexperienced, are brave and unafraid to get hurt for the sake of those they love. Princess Emeraude too, shows great conviction, summoning the only people from another world in order for her to be killed. Overall, for a 90’s anime that was marketed towards a young audience, this is extremely admirable.

1. Mashins

Mashins Rayearth

Mashins are the mecha that the titular magic knights pilot during the key fights in the series. Also called the Rune Gods, the three Mashins are actually legendary guardians of Cephiro, each of which represents an element. The three magic knights are able to summon and pilot them. Umi, the Knight of Fire pilots Celes, who appears as a blue dragon, Fuu, the Knight of Wind, pilots Windam, a massive, four-winged bird, and Hikaru, the Knight of Fire, pilots Rayearth, a being which appears as a massive wolf with a mane of fire. The three Mashins also have the ability to combine, forming an even more formidable mech.

2. Magic Knights

Magic Knights Rayearth

Of course, the magic knights themselves are a great highlight of the anime. What is quite great about the magic knights is the fact that they are characterized as very strong female leads. Though they are young and are quite intimidated about the prospect of being the saviors of an alien world, they nonetheless rise up to the challenge and become the warriors that they are destined to be. What is also a really great thing about the titular magic knights is the way they complement each other, such as Hikaru and Umi’s expertise in close-range combat and Fuu’s expertise on long-range attacks. Their elemental magic complements each other very well too, with Fuu’s spells mainly being support incantations while Hikaru and Umi’s are usually offensive attacks.

3. The Deconstruction

Deconstruction Rayearth

The series’ main highlight, however, is the deconstruction it initiated on the very genre it has chosen to represent. Though it was packaged as a magical girl anime, it carried a number of elements that were typically not found in anime of the same genre. Apart from this, the realistic approach to the battles, as well as the aftermath of great conflict, also deconstructs the common themes that the typical mahou shoujo anime explore. In fact, Magic Knight Rayearth features arguably the most interesting reveal in terms of the first season’s damsel in distress and antagonist, as the two were shown to be lovers. Lovers which actually feel true love for each other, and lovers who are unwilling to live without the other. What is most admirable about the series is the fact that even the underlying theme of the main plot was deconstructed in a pretty efficient manner.

Magic Knight Rayearth is one of those anime that is really memorable. I’ve watched this more than a decade ago, but I still remember a number of key scenes in it. It is simply that type of anime that refuses to be forgotten or neglected. Truly, this is a title that deserves to be checked out. Otherwise, let us all hope that a remake may be in the works! Till the next article, guys!

What is Shoujo [Definition, Meaning]

Have you ever wondered what anime genre may be the one for you? Well, if you enjoy the genres that are stereotypically female, then you will love shoujo anime! The word "shoujo" is literally the Japanese word for "girl." Shoujo series are directed towards young, teenage girls. Still, that does not mean boys or adult women cannot enjoy a good shoujo series!

[ad_top2 class="mt40"]

General Content of Shoujo

A What is Shoujo- Final

Kimi ni Todoke

Shoujo anime will typically feature romance as part of the main storyline. There are an endless number of shoujo anime and manga on the market revolving around high school romances. The romances in shoujo anime tend to be more idealistic in nature with themes like "love at first sight" or "love has always been at your side." While I hate to make it sound negative, I would rather describe it as the fantasy romance that many girls dream of. Many characters in shoujo tend to battle some sort of conflict within themselves whether it's something as simple as being painfully shy, having an inferiority complex, or even trying to achieve a dream, but many of the issues are ones that girls do face as adolescents. One really funny series is a manga called Heroine Shikkaku, by Koda Momoko, where the main character Hitori thought of herself as the heroine in her own story who was destined to end up with her childhood friend Rita, and labeled everyone else as a side character from reading too many romance novels. This actually may affect some teens who are passive and believe that things will just work out in their favor. There's also Fruits Basket, in which Tohru must cope with the loss of both of her parents and attempt to live independently while trying to fulfill the dream of her mother. Many teenagers have to cope with the loss of a loved one so many may be able to sympathize with Tohru. There are a few notable traits of shoujo heroines. One would be naivety such as in the case of Hikari from Special A, who is so naive, she can't fathom the concept of romance in her own life. Many shoujo heroine believe in the goodness of people and cannot think that others have bad intentions. There are quite a few shoujo heroine who will stand up for their friends, no matter how vile and selfish they really are, and defend them to the end. Shoujo heroine tend to be the pure type with many outstanding qualities that bring out the goodness in some and make others feel completely dirty, but the shoujo series themselves will revolve around these endearing characters and show how they brighten up the world. It's truly a genre for making us believe that there are good people out there. Shoujo tends to be a more lighthearted genre compared to some others. Many are full of exciting doki doki moments like Kimi ni Todoke where you can't help but cheer on Sawako through her transformation in school and get excited about her love life. It is a very lighthearted shoujo anime, but it still has you on the edge hoping that everything works out, but true to many shoujo anime, Sawako still retains her innocence believing that a rival in love is a commendable thing instead of taking it as a chance to best someone else. Then Kaichou wa Maid-sama is also a very lighthearted anime, but it still seems to capture many fans and has many moe moments! Contrary to popular belief, shoujo does not always entail a high school life, though many do take place in high school and some may take place in middle school. Some may take place in college or further down the line as adults. Enjouji Maki is an example of a popular shoujo mangaka whose works tend to revolve around office ladies or young adults more so than high school girls. Sub Categories

Sub Categories

B What is Shoujo- Final

Kaichou wa Maid-sama

Despite what people think shoujo it, it can be fairly complex and does not solely consist of romance. There are many sub genres including fantasy, yaoi, magical girl, historical fiction, harem and ladies' comics. Yaoi is a very popular genre in shoujo, so much so that there are many jokes about girls liking yaoi in many different series across the board. Yaoi and shounen ai are very popular genres amongst girls, so it is no surprise that a large collection does exist as shoujo manga, but the love may continue for many girls as they become young adults so the genre does extend into the josei category as well. Fantasy, supernatural, and historical fiction are common themes in shoujo, aside from the usual school life genre. A very popular series that has even been licensed in the USA is Tsuki no Shippo by Ueda Rinko which takes place at a time when ninja were believed to have existed and the main character is a kunoichi, Usagi who is supposed to marry another ninja. Despite having an aspect of romance, the series really revolves around personal growth than anything else, which goes to show you that shoujo isn't all romance. Another notable subgenre of shoujo, almost as notable as yaoi, would be reverse harems. Yes, ladies get their own harems as well! These tend to have a singular female character surrounded by males who adore her. We have seen many become anime like Saiunkoku Monogatari, Yamato Nadeshiko Shichi Henge, and Ouran High School Host Club from manga, but many do come from visual novels as well like Amnesia, Diabolik Lovers, and Starry Sky. There are so many moe moments and scenes that drive you mad, it's worth watching at least once. Still, it is not a genre that is so plentiful in anime the way harems are. Reverse harems are more plentiful as otome games or manga, but the ones that are in animated form as still very fun to watch! While the shoujo genre tends to be misconstrued as innocent at times, I want to make note that it is not as innocent as it may seem. That's when Ladies' Comics come into play. Once known for publishing josei, now Ladies' Comics publishes more steamy manga for the enjoyment of adolescent girls or office ladies. As a subgenre, this may be labeled as smut, involving something slightly more toned down than hentai, but it can be pretty graphic. Although there may be aspects that are fairly serious in nature like rape, the mangaka will add in a budding romance between both parties making it seem more innocent and endearing than it really is. A popular mangaka who does just this is Shinjo Mayu whose works rarely seem to start off with mutual feelings. Of course, when these are made into anime, they are slightly toned down. Mitsu x Mitsu Drops (Honey x Honey Drops) by Minami Kanan is an OVA where you can get an idea of what may be included in the manga, but it won't give you anything graphic. Now, a really popular subgenre of shoujo that draws in a large male audience would be the magical girl subgenre, but that isn't to say that all magical girl anime is also shoujo. Bishoujo Senshi Sailor Moon is a magical girl anime that is also shoujo for its character traits and the themes in the anime, while the magical girl anime Mahou Shoujo Madoka Magica is not a shoujo anime. A few other notable magical girl anime that are also shoujo would be Shugo Chara and Kamichama Karin whose heroines are very idealistic and pure in nature, and the plots are more lighthearted in content.

Categorizing as Shoujo

nana wallpaper 2

NANA

Publication of the original manga series is also a way to categorize a series into the selected genre, which may confuse some western audiences because of its notable difference from others in the same genre. An example would be the Deep Love series that is clearly more mature in content and not as idealistic as other shoujo manga, but because the manga is published in a shoujo magazine, it is is a shoujo manga. When western audiences try to categorize anime as shoujo, many anime tend to be mislabeled as shoujo because often times, westerners will categorize anime that contain romance as shoujo such as Ah! My Goddess. Sometimes anime with generally female audiences will also be mislabeled as shoujo like Azumanga Daioh. Both of these anime are not shoujo, but they just happen to feature romance so it is a misconception that all romances are shoujo. It would be important to note that Gekkan Shoujo Nozaki-kun, an anime voted to be the funniest of 2014, is also an anime that can be misconstrued as shoujo, but it is actually a shounen anime.

Conclusion

D What is Shoujo- Final

kamisama hajimemashita

Shoujo is a pretty lighthearted genre, but it does have many complexities. However, despite being aimed at younger girls, many people can have an appreciation for shoujo anime and manga. Surprisingly enough, the Koreans and the Chinese have a form of shoujo in their own manhwa and manhua so they, too, can enjoy the genre. Some notable ones are The Flower Ring, Angel Diary, and The Bridge of the Water God. Regardless of what form you choose to enjoy shoujo in, it is a very fun genre with many feel good moments. I know I have my own favorite shoujo mangaka that I absolutely love. Who else out there enjoys a good shoujo series? Anyone recommend anything? Please share your thoughts!

Ayashi no Ceres Preview / Plot (No Spoilers)

There was once a man who had come across a lake in which a beautiful maiden was bathing with her companions and fallen in love. However, these women were in fact tennyo, celestial maidens from Heaven. The maidens each depart upon taking their hagoromo, but the man steals one of the maiden's hagoromo, preventing her from going back to the heavens. The man coerces the maiden to marry him in exchange for the hagoromo, but over the years, the man has not returned the hagoromo and the maiden spends her days weeping. One day, her children reveals where her hagoromo is. The tennyo is able to finally retrieve her hagoromo and disappears, leaving behind her children and husband. Although many variations of this myth exists throughout the world from seal women to swan maidens, the myth does not end here. At the 16th birthday celebration for Mikage twins Aya and Aki, the atmosphere is as lively as a funeral. Their present? The disembodied hand of their ancestor. A power awakens in both of them: Aya as Ceres, the tennyo from the legend, and Aki as the man who stole her hagoromo. Aya is ordered to be killed by her family, but she escapes and now, must figure out her future as well as Ceres' past. She comes across a mysterious man named Touya with no memories who may be the key to survival. This is a tale of vengeance, deceit, hatred, and lust. Welcome to the story of Ayashi no Ceres.

What is Ayashi no Ceres Like? This Anime is for people like what?

Ayashi no Ceres is an intense shoujo anime filled with supernatural elements, action, lust, and horror. It is not an anime for those weak of heart, but if you are a fan of psychoticism, supernatural powers, and drama, this may be a great anime to watch. Ayashi no Ceres is a new take on an age old story brought forth in the present age. Did you ever wonder what the tennyo thought? How she felt about having her livelihood taken away and a new future thrust upon her? If you are a fan of characters with a thirst for revenge and a hatred that has burned for centuries, this anime will grab a hold of you.

What’s so appealing about this piece of work.

While some of the elements used in Ayashi no Ceres are similar to many anime (I.e. bishounen with no memory of his past, males all after one female, the main character being the target of assassination), this animated work is capable of turning it all around with its innovative story, dark themes, and dramatic elements. Ayashi no Ceres is an anime that continually keeps you on your toes wanting more, while terrified to find out what may lay ahead for our courageous heroine, Aya. As you delve deeper and deeper into the story, you are left thirsting for more.

Ayashi no Ceres Main Characters List

Ceres

Ceres Ayashi no Ceres

Voice Actor :Iwao, Junko

While not technically the protagonist, Ceres is an essential character to the main story. She is the purple haired tennyo, the ancestor of the Mikage clan. Ceres is an interesting character who is very much what Aya is not. She's strong, independent, powerful, and despite being a very kind soul, she is not so quick to trust other people. She has a mass of varying attributes, but in the end, I found Ceres to be a very enjoyable character, although she does remind me of shounen protagonists who are overpowered and the topic of everyone's thoughts and conversations. Anyway, although Ceres and Aya technically share the same body, Ceres is a more mature entity from her many years of experience and former lives. Like many shoujo protagonists, she also seems to be single minded in attaining her goals. In some series, that may be adorable, but not in this one. You better hope you are not on the receiving end of her single mindedness! Still, Ceres does have a tender heart and is the entity that Aya needs the most.

Tooya

Tooya Ayashi no Ceres

Voice Actor :Konishi, Katsuyuki

Of course, in any shoujo anime, there must be a bishounen! And, yes, his name is Touya. If that name doesn't have bishounen written all over it, then what does? Touya is that illustrious bishounen and truly, he fits the bill quite nicely. He is the typical bishounen who cannot remember his past nor cares for anyone to get tangled in his affairs. Once, we would call these characters the stoic type, but now I guess Touya is a kuudere. Correct me if I am wrong, please. Touya is a true man of mystery. He is even capable of creating knives from his own body, an ability even he cannot explain. It just works the way he needs it to. He is also very perceptive and quite polite, no matter what the situation is. Touya may be similar to other bishounen, he is the perfect prince charming in this shoujo anime.

Ayashi no Ceres Review

Written by one of my favorite shoujo mangaka of all time Watase Yuu, Ayashi no Ceres is not a shoujo anime to be underestimated. Watase Yuu is notable for creating works such as Fushigi Yuugi and Zettai Kareshi (Absolute Boyfriend) which have had some form of adaptation in the media. Although Ayashi no Ceres is technically a shoujo anime, it does have underlying dark tones and horrifying scenes that may catch you off guard. I remember when I first came across this anime as a teen, I fell in love with it. The story is based off of an old myth that is known around the world, though there are many different variations of the myth, but the overall story is the same. Ayashi no Ceres is the vengeful sequel of that myth and it is oh, so satisfying. This anime managed to keep me forever shocked; there was no end to the excitement in this anime. From love triangles to incest, the romance or obsession is sporadic enough to keep your heart going doki doki. Yet, it is the story between Ceres and her former lover that really drives you mad. It is a thrilling saga of possessiveness, love, and betrayal. So much lies in just that relationship alone that regardless of what your personal feelings may be regarding that relationship, you cry for more information.

ayashi no ceres wallpaper

Although the first time that I watched this anime was in my early teens, I have not tired of the story at all. Even though this anime condenses 14 volumes into a mere 24 episodes, it still keeps very true to the manga and manages to keep to the plot fairly well without adding unnecessary elements or taking away from the main story. Not to say that we should all expect anime to follow the manga, but I just wanted to note that for those who have read the manga, do not be so hesitant to watch the anime. The animation is very true to the manga's artwork as well, which can vary depending on the studio. When you watch Ayashi no Ceres, you can instantly recognize it as a Watase Yuu piece, which I love about it. Nothing is changed just for the mere sake of drawing in viewers. The characters in the anime are very fun personalities. They have wit and goofiness to them, but there are dark underlying tones, which is so perfect for Ayashi no Ceres. It makes it seem more realistic that characters have problems other than just romance or exams. Some of the notable characters like Aya's cousin Kagami have very surprising twists in their personalities. Anger, betrayal, and obsession...These are the key qualities of this anime. You can see it reflected in the history, the plot lines, and in the characters. These qualities truly drive the story of Ayashi no Ceres, and I loved it.

1. Tennyo

Ayashi no Ceres Anime Highlight 1

The entire plot of Ayashi no Ceres revolves around the obsession with Ceres and the blood of the tennyo, or celestial maidens. These women with the tennyo blood are referred to as c-genomes. Aya is the only complete c-genome, but there are others that do exist as well, because the tennyo blood isn't limited to just the Mikage family. Throughout the series, we get to meet many different c-genomes that have awakened in some way, giving their hosts incredible power. Despite attempting to kill off Aya in the beginning of the series, the Mikage family soon began cloning c-genomes in the hopes of replacing flawed, human women with maidens with the blood of the heavens. There is a gross obsession over tennyo women and how perfect they are. This is a notable mindset in Kagami, Aya's cousin, who lusted after the perfect tennyo woman. Perhaps this is a reflection of our own society's obsession with perfection in women and how ridiculous it is, or perhaps not.

2. Hagoromo

Ayashi no Ceres Anime Highlight 2

The hagoromo is that magical item that Ceres must find before she can finally return to her home in the heavens. It is the item that Mikage Shiso, her husband, had stolen and it is the item that many of the characters obsess over. Shiso wants it back to keep Ceres by his side. Ceres needs it to return to the heavens. The Mikage family desire it to create their tennyo clones. This singular item is the sole driving force behind so many characters and yet, no one even knew what it looked like. The hagoromo is an important piece to the puzzle that is the celestial legend. It contains a majority of the tennyo power and is what keeps them young and lively. It is no wonder so many people desire it. Where could it be after so many hundreds of years? Does it still exist? How do you even describe a hagoromo? We can only find out in Ayashi no Ceres.

3. Relationship Between Shiso and Ceres

Ayashi no Ceres Anime Highlight 3

While I wouldn't really want to put a romance or romantic history as a highlight, the relationship between Mikage Shiso and Ceres is an important foundation for the entire anime of Ayashi no Ceres. We are told that Shiso had stolen Ceres' hagoromo so she was forced to be his husband indefinitely until he gave it back, but in truth, he never had any intention to do so. The hatred and desire for vengeance from Ceres is contrasted by Shiso's sadistic obsession to possess Ceres. Their feelings are so different, but the outlet they both used were so violent, you could not help but wonder if they completely and utterly hated each other in this life and the last. Shiso and Ceres are constantly clashing in the most violent storms, how were they ever really husband and wife or is this the result of many years of resentment and a desire for revenge over many rebirths? While watching the anime, I had many questions about their violent attitudes towards one another, but it was the ending of the anime that seemed to dumbfound me the most. I'm not spoiling any endings, however!

Even though many years have passed since my first initial viewing of Ayashi no Ceres, my passion for this anime has yet to wane. I truly believe it was a great anime. Despite being made in the early 2000s, it is still an anime to consider watching at one point if you enjoy shoujo and psychological anime. I wanted to bring back a great older anime to the newer generation of anime viewers! Now that I have told you why this oldie is still a goodie, tell me your opinions, please! Do you love it? Hate it? Won't even consider it? My ears are open so please leave your comments below!

But one day, their friendship is put to the ultimate test during a trip to the national library. Upon stumbling onto The Universe of the Four Gods, a magical novel from China, Miaka and Yui are sucked into its world and they are chosen to be Miko’s, or priestesses of two kingdoms. Miaka becomes the Suzaku no Miko in the southern kingdom, while Yui becomes the Seiryuu no Miko in the eastern kingdom. Not only is their friendship at stake, but so is the fate of the world.

fushigi yugi wallpaper 2

Who Does Fushigi Yuugi cater to?

This is probably the number 2 Shoujo cult hit from the 1990s and is still fondly remembered by countless fans of that generation. Fushigi Yuugi is a Shoujo classic that has it all for men and women alike. It has themes of romance, friendship, intense action, and slice of life. It has something for everyone. Despite its ancient Chinese setting, the character designs are diverse and beautiful, and the costume designs perfectly reflect the personality of the characters. So anyone into Shoujo that almost borders as Josei is going to enjoy this show. In addition, the Japanese version has some of the best names in the business such as Midorikawa Hikaru, Koyasu Takehito, Kae Araki, and so on. If anything, Midorikawa Hikaru’s role as Tamahome was probably his breakout role worldwide.

What is appealing about Fushigi Yuugi?

Though its qualities may not have the same effect to younger and newer fans as it did for older viewers during its prime, Fushigi Yuugi for its time was a rather progressive anime compared to other hit Shoujo titles such as Sailor Moon, Wedding Peach, and Magic Knight Rayearth. It was the first anime for many western viewers back in the VHS fansub days that dealt with gay characters such as Nuriko, who became the breakout character. It deals with other mature themes such as other forms of sexuality, discrimination, and bullying. It also serves as a critique of Japan’s education in context to how parents pressure their children to get into a good high school. However, many of these themes are still important to today’s society in Japan.

Fushigi Yuugi Review Review Spoilers

Though by some standards today, the story may seem a bit cliché, but for its time in the mid-1990s, it wasn’t really that much of the norm. So this series’ “Alice in Wonderland” influential concept may not be something that will appeal to everyone since newer and/or younger already seen it in more semi-mainstream animes in comparison to this one such as 12 Kingdoms and Inuyasha, which came out after Fushigi Yuugi, though this was the anime that did it before it became something semi-common. Even though this is primarily shoujo, the well diverse and distinct, but archetypical, cast do have mass appeal. Each character has their own unique use and contribution to the story, and they are presented in ways you get to know them. The characters, or maybe even one character, will grow on you as you watch from start to finish. I would explain this, but you’re going to have to wait to the three event spoilers. If you’ve seen this anime, you know what I’m talking about. Whether that character is good or bad, you’ll love them. On an interesting note, Nakago, the primary antagonist, happens to be the favorite character of Watase-sensei. This series has an equal appeal to both men and women. It has romance, adventure, excitement, comedy and action, which we’ll further get into. Thanks to these contributing qualities, the anime succeeds in its cross gender appeal. The anime ends in a way where everything is virtually resolved, and the characters wonderfully develop. However, what will likely annoy audiences is the interaction between Tamahome and Miaka when they really get romantic with each other. It kind of drags and we don’t need that much hugging even if we can appreciate how much they love each other.  The costume designs are a little flamboyant for the setting, but even so, they still compliment the character designs very well where it helps make them stand out a bit more. The action is well coordinated, technical and raw, which will appeal to those who enjoy action. The designs of the cities breathtakingly capture the heart of ancient China. However, with the character and costume designs in the modern day Tokyo settings, audiences get a different view to the school uniform with the blazer and ribbon design you see in, let’s say Evangelion, than the more mainstream sailor uniform, which is presented in Sailor Moon. It is also unique to point out in the real world of Fushigi Yuugi, nobody has crazy color hair, but in the Universe of the Four Gods story, the characters get the typical crazy color anime hair, which happened to be the intentions of Watase-sensei and the staff at Studio Pierrot. The dub of Fushigi Yuugi does have some credible names, but I don’t think it was enough to provide a quality dub. The biggest name in the dub is David Hayter, who you may know as the voice of Solid Snake from the hit Konami gaming series, Metal Gear Solid, plays Tamahome. When you hear that voice in relation to Tamahome’s image, it just doesn’t match. He makes Tamahome sound gruffy, and it just doesn’t work for a character who is seventeen and really soft at heart. However, this was a role I thought perfectly suited his Japanese seiyuu, Midorikawa Hikaru, the voice of Heero Yuy from Gundam Wing and Rukawa from Slam Dunk. If anything, he is probably one of the best seiyuus of all time. Granted Midorikawa has played character opposite from Tamahome, he has a different kind of cool that Solid Snake has, but Midorikawa still has that passion and soft side that really captures Tamahome. As a matter of fact, Watase-sensei actually wanted him to play Tamahome because he had him in mind when she created the character. I also enjoyed Kae Araki, the voice of Sailor Chibi Moon as Miaka. She does sound annoying with her high-pitched voice, but it was at a certain tone where it really captured the character with all of these emotions whether sad, happy, concerned, or excited. And Seki Tomokazu, my 2nd favorite seiyuu who has played Miyata in Hajime no Ippo, Domon in G Gundam, Kamui in X The Movie, and many others as great as Chichiri, my 2nd favorite character no da. It's so cute how he always ends his sentences in (na) no da. He is so multi-talented and he demonstrates it very well when you get to know his character more no da. Overall, the cast is just top notch and they all have great chemistry no da. Even though the romantic tension between Tamahome and Miaka gets annoying, their seiyuus truly make it believable. The opening theme song Itoshii Hito no Tame Ni does open with this more traditional approach and then at the right moment, transitions to a more energetic J-Pop song. It’s very unique to me because it captures the cultural and romantic atmosphere of the series. And the ending theme Tokimeki Doukasen has a different kind of energy that is generic but still catchy and semi sexually suggestive in a more innocent sense. The background music is well orchestrated in every sense using a mix of great piano chords and traditional eastern percussions and acoustics.

1. The relationships

The Relationships fushigi yugi

The main driving point of this series is the relationships of the characters. It is also the motivation for the character developments. Even when Miaka loses her friendship with Yui and when Tamahome loses his family, they still find ways to keep going through their love and their friendships with their companions. With Yui, she shares a bond with her soldier, Suiboshi. Suiboshi is in love with Yui, but only sees him like a little brother but still cares deeply for him. With Chichiri, prior to meeting the other gods,

2. The Origin of the Universe of the Four Gods

TheOriginofthe UniverseoftheFourGods fushigi yugi

It turns out that Miaka and Yui were not the first Japanese school girls to jump into the world of an ancient Chinese story. During the Taisho period, or 1920s Japan, a literary professor brought the book back from China as a project and his daughter became one of the first Miko's and fell in love with a boy she met there. Sometime later, another young woman became a priestess. Unfortunately, both of their journeys ending in tragedy. Eventually, the book was sealed for more than 50 years within the library. Also, the stories of these two first Miko's have become a manga not too long ago, but no anime has been confirmed.

3. Nuriko

Nuriko fushigi yugi

For many fans, Nuriko was the breakout character. He is probably one of the first internationally famous openly gay anime characters ever. At first, many (and fans themselves) assumed he was a woman but after a series of mishaps, the audience and characters learn the truth. Of course the characters do express a certain level of discomfort and do tease him, but the character’s sweet and gentle-natured qualities make you grow on him. Plus, the motivations behind why he became a cross-dresser is also rather touching in its own strange way, but seeing it from his viewpoint, you do have empathy. And the most heartbreaking moment of this series is when he dies fighting Ashtari. It broke the hearts of many anime 90s kids and many fans of that period are not ashamed to admit they cried when he died.

I think this is an anime I believe you should try to give a chance even if it may not be your taste. There are all kinds of good qualities this anime has that do make up for its bad ones. Even so, the bad qualities are still there but if you concentrate and stick to what you like, you’ll forget about them. I remember during the days of VHS fansubs, I used to talk to people who cried watching this series. It has all of these great themes such as love, friendship, loyalty, and betrayal and they are presented in a very relatable and approachable manner. And believe me, there are moments where you might and I’m not ashamed to admit I have cried watching this series. If you're a seiyuu buff, this is the series for you. No matter how cliché some of the aspects may be, they are presented in a very relatable matter for people, to enjoy and the series still continues through new manga stories.

What is Shounen? [Definition, Meaning]

As an avid anime watcher, it’s pretty obvious that no one needs to tell you about the different genres, especially if they try to tell you about shounen! If you are less of a romantic and prefer to just watch badass fights between strong characters, then this is the genre for you! Although typically not used in everyday lingo, the word “shounen” means “boy”. Thus, the genre shounen is one that is targeted at a younger male audience. Nonetheless, people who are in their late teen years and sometimes even in their 20s are very much into this genre. Although the genre itself originates back to the 90s before it became a big thing in the early to mid 2000s, there seems to be more and more manga and anime out there that are set in this genre! When immersing yourself in this genre, you never have to worry about running out of anime or manga: there will always be new ones!

[ad_top2 class="mt40"]

The Bread and Butter of Shounen

In any anime that’s classified as shounen, there’s always an underdog that’s cast as the protagonist. This character is always shunned by society for a characteristic that they possess which makes them “different”, and they are therefore seen as a possible threat that could change the entire system that most people are comfortable with. Essentially, the goal of these protagonists is to prove themselves to be worthy and to receive acknowledgment. Whether it’s for good or for evil depends entirely on the character, but typically, these guys end up on the good side and want to protect instead of destroy. What anime and manga in this genre attempt to teach us is that: no matter where you come from, if you work hard enough, you will get to where you need to be, and you will be happy. What makes this genre so popular isn’t just the fighting scenes and the brilliantly constructed villains, it’s also about the life lessons that are offered by each character, which is meant to teach us to have different perspectives and how that is a harbinger for success, no matter what life throws at you. A thoughtful notion, of course.

Fairy Tail

Fairy Tail wallpaper
[Information episodes=" 175 " aired=" October 2009 — March 2013 "]

An obvious example that has gone on the rise as a good shounen in the last couple of years is the Fairy Tail series by Mashima Hiro. Although the series focuses on different characters and their strengths and weaknesses, the main point of the story is the idea of growth and love. Although Natsu Dragneel, the protagonist, is not an obvious victim of being shunned by society, he possesses a characteristic that is considered rare — he is a Dragon Slayer. In the world of Magnolia, being a Dragon Slayer is incredible, due to the fact that those who have Dragon Slayer magic are those who are feared greatly. Essentially, this means that people who are classified as having this type of magic are those that were trained directly by powerful dragons, who, from the very start of the story, no longer exist. Natsu’s ultimate goal is to find Igneel, the dragon who raised him, but of course, there are a bunch of obstacles along the way.

Shounen heroes and protagonists all possess a trait that makes their story work, and that trait is perseverance. Although it is entirely natural and human to want to give up on trying, characters such as Naruto and Ichigo (Bleach) always get back up on their feet after they have fallen, stronger than ever before. Even a classic series like Inuyasha dictates the protagonist as one who will never give up, even if it might cost him his life. Not only are these characters incredibly tenacious, but they also care a great deal for their friends, and naturally, their support system is one that is strong! After immersing yourself in the shounen genre, you’ll feel somewhat motivated to do whatever it is you want to do, whether it’s to clean your bathroom aggressively, or whether it’s to do your homework before the deadline — it is entirely your call, but your motivation will go up by tenfold! Despite the serious overtones of shounen series as a whole, there’s bountiful heartwarming moments between characters, and of course, in order to spice things up, there is almost always a female love interest! Although the point of the story is not the romance, it usually ends with the protagonist winning over the heart of the girl he’s in love with, and it’s (usually) so satisfying, considering the fact that they’ve achieved all the things they needed in order to make them happy! There is also an endless stream of jokes and humour that keep you hooked and not easily bored with the action that is consistently on your screen! Of course, there are shounen in which romance isn’t necessarily a plot point, and a lot of the time, it’s more about changing a system of authority as opposed to small things such as romance. Attack on Titan is a perfect example of this, because even though there are hints of slight romances here and there, the main focus of the story is to solve a problem that the government has created, and to minimise casualties as they come to a solution. Larger predicaments are fixed before technicalities and formalities are confronted.

After You Take a Bite, Add Some Flavor!

Taking a glimpse into the shounen world, you’ll find that it’s not always about fighting and battles. While shounen technically aims at younger boys, there are also people of various ages that get sucked into the shounen world. For those who are slightly older than the targeted age, they need a little more than just the simple “I want to fight to be better” trope to stay interested. Mangakas have taken the liberty to begin making their stories more wholesome, with less plot holes and flaws. If a story becomes timeless, it means that the lessons that it teaches are ones that can be used at any time — and if that is the key to making a series a classic, mangakas need to consider problems of the world that are repetitive in history, in the present, and even for the future. A somewhat common predicament that presents itself in shounen anime and manga is the problem of authority: who is the government? What have they indoctrinated into their people? Who controls the government? Fullmetal Alchemist is one of the classic examples of a series that doesn’t merely focus on the protagonists’ personal catharsis. While the mangaka is aware that her characters are flawed, it is apparent that she doesn’t allow their weaknesses to be a catalyst for their downfall. Instead, she chooses to make them stronger by posing a bigger problem in their society, which is what drives them to utilise their flaws as a way to achieve a bigger goal that ultimately changes their world. Shounen isn’t always so hard-hitting, though! It is no secret that in the various anime genres, there’s always the supernatural genre that can be considered to be quite popular, and has thus gained some semblance of an audience. The interesting thing about supernatural-themed anime is that with genres like shoujo and slice-of-life, the supernatural thing can definitely work, and has been proven to pique the interest of audiences. The aspect of the supernatural world is that it’s not universal, and it is pretty much limited to the Japanese definition of supernatural, creating a sense of authenticity that instantly pulls you in and keeps you hooked.

Noragami wallpaper

When Japanese myths and folktales are in the mix with a shounen genre, it creates a whole new element of excitement for the audience. Not only is the protagonist facing a fatal flaw that could be their downfall, but there are supernatural aspects of their world that they need to fight off, too! A prime example of this is Noragami, in which the protagonist is a god, named Yato, that seeks to achieve his goal of being acknowledged by believers of the Shinto faith. The series is action-packed, filled with “sword” fights and endless battles between the good and the evil. This type of shounen is always interesting because the weight of the battles is lightened due to the immensely plot-driven aspects.

[ad_middle class="mt40 mb40"]

Comedy in Shounen

gintama wallpaper

Apart from the usual shounen trope with an underdog for a protagonist, there’s an additional aspect to consider: comedy. While all shounen series have an element of comedy present, there are some series that revolve around jokes and puns while simultaneously displaying the classic shounen characteristics. Gintama, for example, is an anime that is labeled as comedy, but it is also most certainly a shounen. When we are introduced to the series, we are merely being told what goes on in the world of Edo at a particular time in history. It is a little misleading to think that this is what Gintama is entirely about, because of course, the fact that the protagonist was a samurai that was stripped of his power ever since the freedom of the country was compromised is enough of an indication to tell you that there is a past. Gintama by itself is already an interesting series, and it’s characterised by its long but fruitful dialogue. More often than not, fans of this series are either snorting through their noses at how stupid some of the characters act, or trying very hard not to laugh too much because of how ridiculous some of the jokes and running gags are. An element of vulgarity is present that makes Gintama an irreplaceable series, even though there are other series out there that are just as vulgar. Another aspect of an anime like Gintama is the fact that it references other popular manga and anime, which is common in comedic series such as Danna ga Nani wo Itteiru Wakaranai Ken. Essentially, anime like these are ones that break the fourth wall between the characters and its audience, almost as though the writer is making a direct connection to his or her audience. Despite the many benefits of a shounen anime also being predominantly comedic, these types of anime usually have a fanbase of those who are in their early 20s to late 20s.

One Punch Man

One Punch Man 2
[Information episodes=" 12 " aired=" October 2015 — December 2015 "]

One Punch man is a relatively new shounen series and it possesses characteristics and qualities of a conventional shounen anime. Saitama, the protagonist, is a guy who merely wants to save the world with his own powers. He is not the typical underdog that we are used to seeing, but he is an underdog nonetheless. He is someone with pure intent on wanting to save the world, and so he trained his ass off in order to be someone that was worthy of saving people and being a hero. Of course, people that were higher up in the hierarchy did not acknowledge him or his strength merely because of his appearance, and as Saitama seeks to prove himself to the ones who said he wouldn’t succeed, he meets different friends along the way, one of whom is named Genos, a cyborg who looks up to him and recognises his hard work and perseverance. Saitama spent about three years training by himself in order to become infinitely stronger, and one of the defining features about him that most people notice at first glance is the fact that he’s bald, and how he lost his hair is one of the things about him that makes fans love him — he became bald because of all his hard work and training! Although the theme of the anime and series itself is somewhat “serious” in the sense that it’s pretty heavy on the notion of saving the world, the writer of the webcomic-turned-into-anime has taken the liberty to ensure that it is still entertaining as hell! There are bountiful badass fights, and as is usually present in shounen anime, a companion that admires the protagonist greatly. A lot of fans around the internet like to joke around that in a lot of shounen, the power of “nakama” is what drives characters to become stronger and fight harder for justice, or for their honor, or whatever it is that they intend to fight for. However, the notion of believing in your friends and possibly your family is one of the more intricate details of shounen, and the funny part is that it works. Generally, people don’t tend to get tired of the friendship trope, because it’s so common that it would be an outlier if it wasn’t comprised of these components. Having a protagonist with a fatal flaw and try to prove themselves to an audience of people that underestimate them is what shounen is all about — and One Punch Man surely delivers!

Conclusion

As you can see, there are so many different types of shounen anime, but they all have one thing in common: they all want to reach out to you and tell you their story, and hope that you can see their hard work being rewarded, in the hopes that it'll be a story that sticks with you! Whether it’s a classic shounen like Naruto or Fairy Tail, a shounen that is about changing the system, like Attack on Titan, or a comedic shounen that'll have you on the floor laughing like Gintama, surely you will be taught new life lessons. Many shounen fans don’t like to stick to just one sub-genre of shounen, as they say they like to expand the anime they watch so they don’t get bored. Truly, there’s a reason why shounen is one of the most popular genres: it’s because of how willingly writers want to reach out to their audience!

Hana Yori Dango dvd

Boys Over Flowers is definitely a classic shoujo romance, set in a school with a quintessential love triangle between a strong, intelligent protagonist and two boys that rival in popularity, but couldn’t be any more different when it comes to personality. Perhaps as a marker to how dramatic Boys Over Flowers can be, this story has been adapted into not only Japanese, but also Taiwanese, Korean, and Indian television dramas. Known in Japan as Hana Yori Dango, and affectionately shortened to HanaDan, Boys Over Flowers tells a strikingly realistic, but equally unbelievable fairytale of a high school girl Tsukushi Makino who goes to a high school exclusively for the rich upper crust of society; however, this high school is terrorized by four gorgeous and powerful men; the Flower Four (F4), who bully just about anyone for any reason. Tsukushi easily becomes their next target for her brazen outspokenness against their twisted shenanigans, but she will never give in and continues to stand up against them. In a super gigantic plot twist, she ends up falling for one or two of them, despite their obvious mean streak. Boys Over Flowers became and still is the gold standard for bad boy love triangle drama even though the anime aired over 18 years ago. After such a long hiatus, a second manga series of Boys Over Flowers is currently being released and is called Hana Nochi Hare: HanaDan Next Season. If you prefer watching anime to reading manga, here are six anime similar to Boys Over Flowers all ready for your viewing pleasure!

1. Marmalade Boy

Marmalade Boy dvd
[Information episodes=" 76 " aired=" Mar. 1994 – Sept. 1995 "]

An oldie but goodie, Marmalade Boy is a shoujo, romance anime that actually predates Boys Over Flowers by a couple years. Produced by the same studio, Toei Animation, Marmalade Boy was made as one of a series of shoujo anime including Boys Over Flowers, so it’s no wonder the two are quite similar in storytelling and animation. In Marmalade Boy, a likable Miki finds herself in an emotionally complicated love triangle as she finds herself truly falling in love for the first time. Two families strangely decide to family swap, bringing together Miki and her new brother Yuu. Yuu is originally cruel to Miki, but somewhere and somehow they find love in a “broken” place. Life isn’t smooth sailing, however, as a jealous ex continuously tries to break them apart. Marmalade boy Yuu isn’t as heartless as Domyouji in the beginning of Boys Over Flowers, but it has all that angst and old school flavor that will put you right back into F4 mode.

To pay for the vase, Haruhi joins the club and cross-dresses as a male host, but this risky move brings her to the attention of the prince of the hosts, Tamaki, who quickly falls for her. Ouran High School Host Club is a light-hearted comedy with a hint of romance between our intelligent lead and a not-so-intelligent but gorgeous rich boy. It is almost as if someone took Boys Over Flowers and decided to make all the characters into adorable caricatures of themselves while throwing in a few more flower boys, you know, for fun.

4. Kaichou wa Maid-sama! (Maid-sama!)

dvd Kaichou wa Maid-sama
[Information episodes=" 26 " aired=" Apr 2010 – Sept 2010 "]

Just like Boys Over Flowers, this anime spans a lot of genres: shoujo, romance, school, and comedy. Misaki is the strong, smart student council president of her high school, but she also works at a maid café to make ends meet. She managed to keep her image-destroying part-time job a secret from her schoolmates until she gets spotted by the most popular boy in school, Usui, a handsome teenage boy who is rather aloof and somewhat cold. In classic romantic comedy fashion, hilarity ensues as Misaki agonizes over if Usui will tell the world about her secret, but this horrible situation soon turns to love. Privileged bad boy? Check. Poor, hard-working girl? Check. It may be a slightly different version of the rich boy, poor girl formula when compared to Boys Over Flowers, but Maid-sama! does it well and with a few laughs. The characters seem like a good match. In the end, you’re left with emotional satisfaction that you would expect from a romantic comedy. You may be wondering by now, how could a self-respecting girl like Misaki (or Tsukushi) fall for a pretentious jerk like Usui (or Domyouji), and this anime will give you the answers, all the answers you already knew but wanted to know again.

5. Akagami no Shirayuki-hime (Snow White with the Red Hair)

akagami no shirayukihime-s2
[Information episodes=" 12 (Season 1), 12 (Season 2) " aired=" Jul. 2015 – present "]

Boys Over Flowers may be a fairytale Cinderella story meets modern life, but Snow White with the Red Hair is an actual Cinderella tale, or a Snow White tale. A rich prince and a simple poor girl fall in love, but this time in a much sweeter and newer package. Snow White with the Red Hair is currently airing, so you get your romance with brand spanking new animation presented masterfully by the animation studio Bones. Shirayuki is an honest, intelligent, and kind girl who works diligently at her family’s medicine shop, but when she is forced to become a concubine to the prince of her country, she flees only to be saved another prince, Prince Zen, of a neighboring country. Shirayuki enters the castle of Prince Zen because she wants to repay him for saving her but also because of growing feelings and attraction to him. The second season has just started. Since Zen’s older brother, the crowned prince, has returned to the castle, Shirayuki and Zen’s relationship has been put under a microscope. Meanwhile other men are also showing interest in Shirayuki. Will it lead to a royal wedding or to the end of a fairy tale? Snow White with the Red Hair may appear too clean cut to be similar to Boys Over Flowers, but the difference in social status between the two main characters and how they learn to rely and trust each other despite all the upper class naysayers has the earmarking of Boys Over Flowers. That is, if Tsukushi would choose Hanazawa’s alternate reality sweet-hearted younger brother, who does not exist in HanaDan, but we wish he did! Not to mention the show is super character-driven, and Shirayuki is an extremely lovable character and a joy to watch in this classic shoujo series.

6. Nagi no Asukara (A Lull in the Sea)

dvd Nagi no Asukara
[Information episodes=" 26 " aired=" Oct. 2013 – Apr. 2014 "]

A Lull in the Sea brings a purely fantastical story to the modern world with gorgeous modern animation and is heavy on the drama and romance with a splash of fantasy. In a small coastal town in Japan, the local people share the shore with a group of people who live under the sea. But, as sea dwellers are slowly and controversially moving to live on land, the sea people population has become so small, sea schools have closed, and the children must attend school with land dwellers. One sweet and simple-minded junior high school girl of the sea, Manaka, finds herself drawn to a new classmate on land, Tsumugu, who also has a keen interest in the students from the sea. This new found innocent relationship is troubling to Manaka’s childhood friend, Hikari, who sees himself as Manaka’s only protector and only match, though he is unsure of his true feelings. These relationships are further strained by discrimination and deep-seated rivalries between those of the land and those of the sea. A Lull in the Sea is a beautiful love polygon mixed with coastal town mythology that will bring you to tears of sadness and joy. Instead of social class discrimination we see in Boys Over Flowers, A Lull in the Sea brings us tensions between “races” of people. Like Boys Over Flowers, characters rule the story, and emotional conflicts, expressed or not, are always front and center. Not to mention there are more love triangles than you can wave a stick at. The story is mainly told from Hikari’s perspective, but the emotions are so raw and real, A Lull in the Sea is guaranteed to leave you a giant, sobbing puddle on the floor, regardless who you’re shipping. That being said, who do you ship?

No, you are not wrong! Before this story became famous because of the popular Korean drama television in 2009, this manga was adapted to an anime series that aired between 1996-1997, and they even made a live-action movie in 1995, and a Japanese TV drama series in 2005. When Tsukushi Makino decided to go to the famous Eitoku Academy, she didn't know that her simple life was about to be changed by the infamous "Flower Four" or F4, that basically is a group of 4 boys that rule the academy. After getting the attention of the F4 leader because she was the only girl that wasn't falling for him, her life will be in a constant roller coaster, the leader F4 leader will go from bullying her every day to develop deep feelings for this stubborn girl. With a unique beginning that will capture your heart, Hana Yori Dango also captures the spirit of young love, just like Blue Spring Ride. A relationship that starts from hate and finishes in love, will make you wonder in how many ways love can come to you without warning, just like it happened to Futaba and Kou when they began high school.

2. Wolf Girl and Black Prince

Wolf Girl and Black Prince dvd
[Information episodes=" 12 " aired=" October 2014 - December 2014 "]

What does Erika Shinohara from Wolf Girl and Black Prince have in common with Futaba Yoshioka from Blue Spring Ride? They make random stories in order to impress their friends. But Erika decided to include a random stranger whom she took a candid photo and told everyone that he was her boyfriend. Little she knew that the boy in the photo goes to the same school with her, and with a “charming prince” attitude he accepted to play along with her game. However, Erika did not expect that her charming prince would turn into a black prince who started a game of his own that included blackmail and pet treatment. Erika and Futaba have something in common, more than the fact that apparently they like to make lies, and is that they end up learning to love their partners. Nowadays people tend to fall in love instantly, but these girls took their time to learn how to love these cold guys, but who are we to judge?

If you are shoujo lover, then this anime should be in your top five favorite shoujo anime. Itazura na Kiss tells the popular story of Kotoko Aihara who confessed her feelings for Naoki Irie, but he rejected her because he does not like dumb girls. But fate decided to give another opportunity to this poor girl by destroying her house with an earthquake, and she had no other choice than to move with his father’s childhood best friend whose son turns out to be no other than Naoki. Fate can be funny sometimes, right? Just like Naoki at the beginning, Kou from Blue Spring Ride does not like Futaba when he meets her again in High School, but eventually he will develop feelings for her again just like in this anime. There is a saying that goes “Hate is just one step away from love”.

We all want a person like Haru Yoshida as a friend, even though he might be sometimes a little monster. Most of us has a friend or classmate that is like Shizuku Mizutani. A cold-hearted girl that does not care about making friends, and whose only interest is studying. But people like Shizuku can change when someone like Haru appears in their life. This strange couple has an exquisite way of starting their relationship that makes you wonder if you’re really not in love with one of your friends right now. Shizuki knew that she had feelings for his little monster, but Haru could not tell the difference between “like” or “in love”. Sounds similar? Futaba knew that she was still in love with Kou, but the stubborn Kou was never sure about his feelings for her. Just like the main characters of My Little Monster, Futaba and Kou from Blue Spring Ride passed through the same struggles. Friends that due to their confusing feelings go through some problems until their hearts find a way to finally release their true desires.

5. Kimi ni Todoke (From Me to You)

kiminitodoke
[Information episodes=" 25 " aired=" Oct 2009 - Mar 2010 "]

How would you feel, if your classmates compared you with the main character from The Ring? The poor Sawako had to deal with this every day in her school. Her classmates used to believe that she was different from them due to her “scary” appearance. Most of them used to believe that “Sadako” could speak to ghosts and cursed people, and that was the reason why no one dared to speak with the sweet and innocent girl. Until one day, the idol of the school decided to become friends with her, which made her open up to her classmates. Due to the fact that she finally made friends, she was eternally grateful to her idol. But destiny decided to grant her one more wish, and Sawako started to develop feelings for him, and he, Shouta Kazehaya, ended up falling for her as well. Sawako is a gentle reminder of Futaba’s past in junior high. Due to the fact that Futaba was feminine and cute, this made her female classmates not like her because all the boys were falling for her. When she met Kou, Futaba felt like she found an “exceptional one” because she used to believe that all the boys were too rough. Shouta can be easily compared to Kou in junior high as well. Both of them were considered as idols due to their gentle manners and intelligence, and of course, both of them only fall for the sweet girls. In resume, we can say that From Me to You could be like the prequel version of Blue Spring Ride, if Kou and Futaba’s past had taken a different path.

6. Shigatsu wa Kimi no Uso (Your Lie in April)

shigatsu wa kimi no uso dvd
[Information episodes=" 22 " aired=" Oct 2014 - Mar 2015 "]

If you haven’t watched this anime, please be warned that you will need at least 2 boxes of tissues. This anime became very popular for its original plot that will make think twice about the way you are living your life now. Kousei Arima was a famous pianist since his childhood, but after his mother dies, he lost the ability to listen to his own playing. After two years of living the normal life of a student, the beautiful violinist Miyazono Kaori walked through his path, and his life changed drastically from that moment. With Kaori’s help, little by little Kousei gets over his trauma and starts to develop feelings for the violinist, but he decided to ignore those heartbeats because she was the love interest of one of his best friends. Kaori can easily represent Futaba’s true personality. Having the ability to help others and share some of their own happiness is something that both of them are good at. After realizing that her feelings for Kou haven’t disappeared, Futaba decides to stay by his side, even though Kou was being cold towards her, but she knew that deep inside he was having problems, and that never stops Futaba from trying to help him, even if that requires her to reveal her true personality to others. Kousei can be compared to Kou, because both of them were hiding from their past, but there is always one person that will bring you to light. Basically we can say that Your Lie in April could be like another version of Blue Spring Ride if Futaba had remained with her true personality after junior high, but definitely with a different ending.

All these anime series have different plots, but there is one thing that these unique stories have in common, the struggles of young love that most people don't really pay attention to. An innocent friendship of a boy and a girl that blossoms into a beautiful relationship. All the young female characters from this list teach us a common lesson - you should never give up on the person you cared the most even if they are going through a dark time. After all there is always light at the end of the tunnel, right? And Blue Spring Ride is the perfect example of never give up on love because you will never know when you are going to see your special one, again.

[Throwback Thursday] Top 10 Strongest Sailor Moon Characters

If you’re a true-born anime fan, you have to admit it. Sailor Moon is among an anime fan’s guiltiest pleasures. Girls look up to the Sailor Scouts and dream of being them, while boys, well, male anime fans would probably admit that at least one of the series’ characters was their first on-TV crush. After all, with a cast as attractive and cute, who could resist them? For today’s list, we’ll be looking at the top ten strongest characters in the Sailor Moon universe. Of course, with the series of this magnitude, I’m going to have to reach very deep into the Sailor Moon mythos and consider the characters which appeared exclusively on the manga too. Nevertheless, I hope you guys enjoy this top ten list!

[ad_top2 class="mt40"]

10. Tuxedo Mask

sailormoon tuxedo mask

Though his role in the original series might be considered vague to a significant degree, there is no denying the fact that this guy is the reincarnation of the Earth Prince Endymion. If there’s anything certain in Sailor Moon, it is the fact that royals are not to be crossed, and they are formidable as well. His expanded role in Sailor Moon Crystal definitely showed fans a more well-rounded dimension to his character, and in that particular series, he was depicted to not only be a capable fighter, he was depicted to be strong enough to stand side by side with his better half, Princess Serenity herself.

Tuxedo Mask sailor moon

9. Sailor Jupiter

Sailor Jupiter Makoto Kino Bishoujo Senshi Sailor Moon

Sailor Jupiter might be just one of the regular Senshi introduced in the series, but there is no denying the raw power that she holds. This has been shown numerous times in the anime as well, especially since Jupiter is already powerful even in human form, being physically strong and imposing due to her tall stature. As a Senshi, she is definitely one of the stronger ones as well. In fact, it could be noted that in the Dark Moon arc, she was the Senshi that had to be cheated and poisoned just so she could be defeated. Her peers, Mercury and Mars, were taken pretty easily.

Sailor Jupiter Makoto Kino Bishoujo Senshi Sailor Moon wallpaper 1

8. Sailor Venus

sailormoon sailorvenus

Of course, the very first Senshi to awaken on Earth deserves a spot on this list. After all, in her past life, she is not just a regular sailor scout. Rather, she was the one who led them to protect Princess Serenity. This alone is proof that to a very significant degree, the power of Venus is no joke. This could be seen through the course of the series as well. After all, even before Sailor Moon emerged as a Senshi, Venus was already an active scout, battling crime to the point when she became a household name, complete with a dedicated video game and the like. Plus, there’s also no denying that her attacks are pretty cool as well.

Sailor Venus wallpaper

7. Sailor Neptune

sailormoon sailor neptune

Neptune is one of the four Outer Senshi of the Solar System, and was introduced in the Infinity Arc. Wielding powers associated with the sea, and having abilities such as precognition even without transforming, she is actually very formidable. Plus, she’s arguably one of the most attractive Sailor Scouts that Naoko Takeuchi designed, making her all the more likeable. One thing that really makes her stand out from the other Senshi is the fact that she holds one of the talismans that are required in order to summon the Holy Grail. Doing so awakens Sailor Saturn, the Senshi of destruction and rebirth.

Sailor Neptune wallpaper

6. Sailor Uranus

sailormoon sailor uranus

Also one of the Outer Senshi, Uranus serves as a foil to Neptune, as the two usually work together and actually have a full-blown romantic relationship (Yes, Sailor Moon was really ahead of its time when it was released, right?). Between the two, however, Uranus was the one who acted as the male persona, with some of the other girls even having a crush on her when she was first introduced. In battle, Uranus is pretty aggressive, with her attacks being based on the element of the sky. She also holds yet another of the talismans required to awaken Saturn, and through her Space Sword, she’s arguably one of the most powerful characters in the Sailor Moon canon.

5. Sailor Chibi Chibi

Chibi Chibi Sailor Moon

If the concept of Sailor Moon was not overt enough, the series is all about power coming from the most unexpected packages. Such is the exact case with Sailor Chibi Chibi, the tiniest and arguably one of the most powerful Senshis introduced in the entire canon. Coming from the endless cosmos itself, this little lady most probably holds powers that are near-limitless and godlike. Part of this is due to the fact that her persona as Chibi Chibi is simply as a disguise. I don’t want to spoil it here, but before she came to Earth as this little lady, she was one heck of a Sailor Senshi. Though the scope of her powers is not really shown, there is little doubt that she is among the top ten.

9 - chibi chibi - sailor moon - hair buns Top 10 Girl Hairstyles in Anime.

4. Sailor Pluto

sailormoon sailor pluto

Sailor Pluto’s existence was so secret that very few even knew that she existed. She holds the Garnet Orb, a powerful staff that imbues her with the power of time. In fact, she is so powerful that she could literally stop time in its tracks, as she did in the season ender of the Black Moon Arc, when she used this power to save Chibiusa, whom she has grown fond of. As a Senshi, Pluto is one of the most ruthless, keeping her tasks beyond all else. As she was instructed to eliminate all intruders who would dare and search for the gates of time, she does not hesitate to kill anyone, even Sailor Moon herself. As formidable as she is, however, her immense power comes at a price; sometimes, at the cost of her own life.

Sailor Pluto wallpaper

3. Sailor Saturn

sailormoon sailor saturn

In sheer destructive powers alone, Sailor Saturn could easily top this list. After all, being the Senshi of death and rebirth, a simple motion of her Silence Glaive was enough to destroy whole worlds and reset the evolutionary time clock to zero. Her power was so immense, that the other three Outer Senshi, Uranus, Neptune, and Pluto, were fearful of her awakening, having witnessed her destructive powers. Just like Pluto, however, her immense power comes at a very steep price, as each time she uses her destructive powers to their full strength, Sailor Saturn dies and gets reborn. Thus, her powers are generally one-time use only, since she literally resets the clock on herself, and of everything around her.

Sailor Saturn wallpaper

2. Sailor Galaxia

Sailor Galaxia

Arguably one of the strongest foes ever to be encountered by the series’ protagonists, Sailor Galaxia is the exact antithesis of Sailor Moon. Whereas Sailor Moon values all life, Galaxia has a habit of extinguishing it. Sailor Moon loves making friends out of her enemies, while Galaxi loves making puppets out of those she intimidates or defeats. Her power is also sourced from the exact opposite of the titular character’s Silver Crystal and thus, imbues her with a ridiculous amount of power. In fact, her ruthless actions, and her tendencies for committing evil were so grave, she eventually gained the notorious reputation of ruining worlds in her quest to find the strongest source of power.

Sailor Galaxia wallpaper

1. Sailor Moon

Sailor Moon Usagi Tsukino

Physically, Sailor Moon might not seem all that powerful. But then again, she is the sole person who could wield the Silver Crystal, which is, as noted earlier, the rumored source of absolute and limitless power. Apart from this, she also holds the power of love; something which, considering the genre of the series, is the ultimate form of power. She is also the one with the purest heart, as could be seen through the course of the series itself. Apart from this, Sailor Moon also holds a ridiculous amount of courage, something which was seen time and again despite the odds being stacked against her. For one, she has the capability to keep fighting even after losing those she deems most important to her, all the while maintaining hope that things will turn out alright in the end. It definitely takes something in order to be that strong.

wallpaper Sailor Moon

And so ends our list of the Top 10 Strongest Sailor Moon Characters. Of course, the other Senshi are powerful as well, but I opted to use a two-pronged approach in this list, considering both characters in the manga and anime. Nevertheless, any comments would be very much welcome. Till the next list, everyone!

Akagami no Shirayuki-hime Preview (No Spoilers)

Shirayuki is a girl with bright red hair who lives in the country of Tanbarun and works as an apothecary. When Prince Raj decides he wants the red headed beauty as his concubine, Shirayuki flees her country after cutting her hair. In her escape, she runs into Prince Zen from Clarines, the neighboring country, who along with his two aides helps her escape. Now in the country of Clarines, Shirayuki aims to become a court herbalist. However, not everybody is happy about this and she faces constant trouble. Luckily, Zen, Mitsuhide, Kiki and Obi, who was originally sent to attack Shirayuki, do all in their power to protect her. After a rough start at the palace, Obi becomes Shirayuki’s bodyguard and an important part of the royal guard.

Obi Bio

Seiyuu: Nobuhiko Okamoto Obi’s past is not very clear, though he is known to have been involved in possibly illegal matters. The first time we see Obi in the series is when Lord Haruka, hires him to scare Shirayuki out of the castle, which leads to Obi shooting an arrow in her direction and sending Zen into a rage. After Lord Haruka’s intentions are revealed, Zen decides to hire Obi as his page and later on entrusts him with being Shirayuki’s personal bodyguard. Obi spends most of his time either helping Shirayuki with her duties, walking with her or watching her nearby. The rest of the time, he runs secret errands for Zen as his personal spy.

Akagami no Shirayuki-hime wallpaper

Obi Highlights

1. Man of Mystery

1 Akagami no Shirayuki-hime capture

As mentioned before, not much is known about Obi’s past - if that is his real name - he doesn’t even have a last name! All we know is he used to be an assassin; he’s good at working in the shadows and prefers moving around at night. Other things that add to his mystery are the scar above his left eye, his affinity for little Ryuu and that he doesn’t seem to have a clear reason or motive to follow and be loyal to Zen. Obi doesn’t really talk about himself, so we have no idea where his ninja skills came from, though he has mentioned only being there “as an observer” and that he “won’t be staying long”. What does that mean!?

2. He Has a Playful Side

2 Akagami no Shirayuki-hime capture

Though he’s mysterious and a serious fighter, Obi is a lighthearted guy. He likes to make jokes and tease others like he does when he flirts with Kiki to make Mitsuhide upset, or when he teases Ryuu about his height. He is also seen helping Ryuu and carrying him on his shoulders. Even at the beginning when Zen catches him after shooting an arrow toward Shirayuki, Obi waves at her with a big smile on his face and answers to Zen’s questions with a big grin. And there’s also the time Zen and Obi share a drink and Obi tells Zen his eyes are a pretty color. He’s generally a cheerful and relaxed guy and is kind of like a knight/jester all in one. However, that doesn’t take away from his abilities as a stealthy fighter, which brings us to our next highlight.

3. Stealthy Ninja Cat

3 Akagami no Shirayuki-hime capture

Obi is referred to as being cat-like by several characters in the show and his amber colored eyes do resemble those of a feline. But that’s not the only way he reminds us of a cat. Obi is incredibly agile and quiet when he fights and when he spies. He can easily and stealthily jump through trees and buildings to observe his prey or his guard. His sword fighting skills are also so great he has received praise from Mitsuhide, who is an amazing swordsman himself. And when Obi challenged Zen to a duel to decide whether he would guard Shirayuki, he effortlessly left Zen without a sword, at which point Zen conceded as he “could never beat him in hand-to-hand combat”. Obi’s well-roundedness as a fighter is the reason why Zen trusts him the most with keeping guard over Shirayuki.

4. He is as Chivalrous as a Knight

4 Akagami no Shirayuki-hime capture

Ever since he came to be part of Zen’s royal guard and therefore one of Zen’s most trusted allies, Obi will do anything in his power to preserve the honor of his prince and his “missy” Shirayuki. He is always ready with an “as my master wishes” for Zen and ready to help Shirayuki even if all she needs is someone to catch her when she slips or someone to help her carry things. And he had no second thoughts when he had to take care of a stumbling drunk Shirayuki after unwittingly drinking some alcohol. Obi is also so loyal to Zen, he doesn’t act upon the feelings he clearly has for Shirayuki, though he’s had plenty of opportunities. Challenging Zen to a duel for the position of Shirayuki’s escort is also very much in line with Knightly behavior.

5. He Has a Romantic Side

5 Akagami no Shirayuki-hime capture

It’s not clear if this is only because of Shirayuki, or if it’s Obi’s nature, but he seems to be a pretty romantic guy. He once used money he won in an archery contest to buy a hair pin for Shirayuki and when he saw her wearing it when on a trip, he was visibly surprised and pleased. He’s also been close to gently holding her hand but backed off when Zen showed up. And of course, there is the more recent situation where he showed interest in the flowers Shirayuki was growing and Ryuu gives him some seeds so he can grow them. When Shirayuki tells him she’s collecting the multicolored seeds but she doesn’t have the blue one yet, Obi keeps the blue seed he has and tells her to show him when she completes the collection. And don’t get me started on when he kisses her hand!

Closing

There is still a lot to learn about Obi’s past as well as his reasons for staying in the castle and what his plans are for the future. But if there is one thing we know is that he is a multifaceted and unique character that we cannot get enough of. He can be mysterious and tough, but also sweet, funny, loyal and caring. There are certainly more than five reasons to love Obi! What’s yours? Please share your thoughts in the comments below! Nya~!

Back in the nineties, when Naoko Takeuchi created a manga about a team of soldier girls in sailor uniforms, she never imagined how enduring the success of her story was going to be. With the release date announcement of the third Sailor Moon Crystal Arc, fans around the world have woken up in discussion forums, vlogs, conventions, and the like, to celebrate and discuss the latest version of one of the most loved shoujo anime of all time. Joining to the spirit of this celebration, this article will take a look to the protagonists of Sailor Moon, Usagi Tsukino, and her soulmate Mamoru Chiba. The first version of the anime presented us with a couple that had several of the characteristics of any typical shoujo pair; disliking each other at the beginning and later dating in a lovey dovey way with a dab of comedy, fueled by an immature and clumsy Usagi. The audience of the Sailor Moon in the 90s was more into anime that catered to the whole family, something that is quite different in the Crystal version. Sailor Moon Crystal follows the original manga by Takeuchi closely, targeting both old and new fans. This means, the dynamics of Usagi and Mamoru’s relationship qualify them to be better role models, and in our humble opinion, to be the coolest power couple that should rule the world. Just look around and tell us, with all those ridiculous and/or violent politicians doing a mess out there, don’t these two look like a much better option? But let’s discuss our five reasons in detail. Just watch your step, this article is full of spoilers!

[ad_top2 class="mt40"]

1. They’ve Got Style

1 Sailor Moon Crystal captcha
[sourceLink asin="" asin_jp="" text="Sailor Moon Crystal Episode 4" url="" ]

First things first. Royal families still are required to have a decent wardrobe. Some of them even become fashion icons! Keep in mind that is not the luxury but the taste what makes a good dress-up. Well, Naoko Takeuchi gave our couple a wonderful sense of fashion. She is fond of looking inspiration in magazines and fashion shows to dress up her characters. Takeuchi also fancies jewels and antiques, so it’s not a surprise that Usagi and Mamoru wear several accessories with a neoclassic and/or art-nouveau tendency. Style does not apply only for especial occasions, though. For example, Mamoru was able to get a classy high-school uniform and glasses in Sailor Moon Crystal. Take note, gentlemen: glasses give you personality. Use them well.

2. They Have Cool Superpowers

2 Sailor Moon Crystal captcha
[sourceLink asin="" asin_jp="" text="Sailor Moon Crystal Episode 14" url="" ]

So we have a well-dressed couple, but that’s not much help in a world full of crisis, right? That takes us to the very important point of having superpowers to fight evil and injustice. Usagi is the owner of the Silver Crystal, which can either destroy or revive an entire planet. She also has a variety of secondary tools, like tiaras and the disguised pen. As for Mamoru, he has graduated from throwing roses and saying catchy phrases in the old version of the anime, to actually having psychometric powers. This means he can transfer his energy to someone in need or focus it towards an enemy, making it explode as a bomb. We definitely have to mention their associates also have cool superpowers based on the planets and the elements, although we could not see much of the Four Kings of Heaven, as usual. Oh well, at least Mamoru can use his powers to consult the spirits of his comrades.

3. Gender Equality

3 Sailor Moon Crystal captcha
[sourceLink asin="" asin_jp="" text="Sailor Moon Crystal Episode 15" url="" ]

Sailor Moon was one of the first shoujo anime that showed diverse strong female roles. In the case of Usagi, she is a happy go lucky girl who, after the first shock of becoming a Sailor Soldier, takes decisions on her own. Mamoru and she take turns to save each other from their enemies, and Usagi even dresses up in a variety of career women outfits for her missions. Mamoru sometimes is shown to feel impotent to protect her (protection is expected from a typical shoujo boyfriend), but nevertheless chooses to stay by her side. Also, although he sometimes just functions as a moral support for Usagi (especially when her childish manners kick in), he goes the extra mile so that she can concentrate on saving the world. Don’t tell us that assuming the responsibility to protect their daughter from the future does not prove that! Which brings us to the next point.

4. They Grow up Together

4 Sailor Moon Crystal captcha
[sourceLink asin="" asin_jp="" text="Sailor Moon Crystal Episode 13" url="" ]

Usagi and Mamoru met as teenagers who fancied each other at first sight, but were verbally rude. Things quickly became more difficult, as the Dark Kingdom and later other enemies attacked the Earth. So, they had to rise to the occasion and took the responsibility of saving the world, although this meant they would not have normal lives ever again. As consequence, Usagi passes from being a clumsy middle-school student to be the leader of the Sailor Soldiers, something she learns to deal with on the way. She also had to learn, at the same time, how to communicate with Mamoru as a couple. Misunderstandings, jealousy, and two different personalities are solved and brought together little by little. One good example of this, is shown in the Black Moon Arc, in the famous scene which fans think predates the first time Usagi and Mamoru had sex. Anyway, in the end they become reasonably good “foster” parents for Chibiusa, their daughter of the future and Sailor Soldier in training.

5. They Have the Perfect Combination of Ingredients to Achieve World Peace

5 Sailor Moon Crystal captcha
[sourceLink asin="" asin_jp="" text="Sailor Moon Crystal Episode 20" url="" ]

With all their personal characteristics brought together, their style, their super abilities, and the balanced way they manage their relationship, these two have everything to achieve world peace. They also have a super team of guardians and counselors that are, above all, their friends. Solid and healthy relationships lead to strong organizations, and can function as precedents for society at large. We do not have to look far for examples. Crystal Tokyo is shown as a futuristic paradise where Neo Queen Serenity (Usagi) and King Endymion (Mamoru) are respected and loved rulers. And, if the occasion arises, they will always be ready to defend their people from evil while being fair at the same time.

Closing Paragraph

So there you go, the greatest power couple in anime that should be the rulers of the world. We could go for that, so… when do we pack up for Crystal Tokyo? Of course, we are looking forward to the next Sailor Moon Crystal Arc and meet our favorite characters again. For the little that is known, they are going to keep faithful to the original manga, so we will hopefully have the chance to see more about the family interactions between Usagi, Mamoru and Chibiusa. We also wonder how the old characters will interact with the Outer Sailor Soldiers, as they were sort of playful flirts at the beginning of the Arc (there always has to be some love drama in our otaku lives). We hope you liked this article. We welcome all your comments and opinions. See you soon!

[sourceLink asin="" asin_jp="B01AB8HHJW" text="" url="" ]
[Information episodes=" 12 " aired=" Jul 2015 - Sep 2015 "]

Akagami no Shirayuki-Hime is our first recommendation because is one shoujo anime that, just like Shin Shirayuki-Hime Densetsu Prétear, is well received by shounen fans. Both anime series similarly based their storylines beyond the original well known tale of Snow White, developing their own saga around strong yet extremely kind girls, while following the same basic theme of good vs evil, and that love conquers all. In this story, recently adapted from an ongoing manga, the main character, a girl named Shirayuki (Snow White), is a herbalist with an unusual brilliant apple red hair. She never loses her smile and her gentleness towards others, and leads her life peacefully; until one day the prince of her land, Tanbarun, hears of her unusual hair color, and wants her as his concubine to enhance his reputation. Without relatives to lean on, Shirayuki develops a strong sense of self-reliance, so rather than giving herself to an empty life as a collectable object, she runs away, crossing paths with Zen, a prince in disguised; giving a start to her adventures. Even lacking in the magic transformation department, this anime series roots in your heart by its own right; and just like with Himeno and Hayate of Prétear, it makes you cheer for Shirayuki and Zen to get through their hardships and find happiness together.

[Information episodes=" 52 " aired=" Apr 1995 - Mar 1996 "]

This animated series, is one of the pieces that became a must watch in the genre of reverse harem. On the same line as Shin Shirayuki-hime Densetsu Prétear, this magical adventure/romance tale, delivers bits of comedy as a relief for the surprisingly intense drama developed in the plot. This anime uses the same formula as Prétear of having 7 guardians to aid the heroine to fulfill her destiny, giving the reverse harem lovers a real treat. This anime, is also an adaptation of the popular manga of the same name, and refers to the adventures of a normal cheerful girl named Miaka Yūki, who is whisked away to an estrange world through a magical book. There she finds out that she has been chosen as the vassal of a mythical power that aims to reunite seven warriors, and with their help, summon the god that will defeat evil and bring peace to the land. Trapped in the middle of a conflict of epic proportions, Miaka meets his one true love, Tamahome, and in the midst of the trials that have to overcome, her feelings vacillate, because of the development in the relationship with her guardians, making us witness a heart wavering situation, which is the most attractive magnet of the series.

[Information episodes=" 2 " aired=" march 2002 - Jan 2003 "]

Now for our next anime recommendation, let’s introduce Harukanaru Toki no Naka de: Ajisai Yumegatari. This OVA of 2 episodes adapted from a popular manga, have a storyline quite similar to Prétear, with the particularity of bringing the development of the characters beyond the visual attractiveness, introducing in their backgrounds a feeling of uniqueness of personality. This quality that earned the franchise lots of followers, as has been portrayed in three OVAS, two TV series, one TV special, a movie, and at least 22 romance video games, (better known as otome games), and two live-action stage plays. Similar to Shin Shirayuki-hime Densetsu Prétear, the plot of this story begins when a girl named Akane is summoned from her normal life and brought to a mystical place, in this case the land of Kyou; where she learns, is the possessor of the power that makes her the priestess of the dragon. With her new title, Akane receive the protection and aid of 8 guardians, and, in a situation very similar to one in Prétear, these guardians lend her their strengths to defeat Akuram; A demon who wishes to destroy the kingdom by absorbing human energy. The principal attraction of this anime, resides in the empathy that delivers, making you feel identified or even angry at one or another character in the development of the series, hence to say the big popularity of the title and the loyalty of the fans through the years.

Did you like Prétear humorous approach? Then you are going to love this anime. The plot starts with a trip to the thoughts of a young girl, Hinamori Amu, who is tough and cool on the outside, but have a very sweet girlie character on the inside. Somehow for one or another reason she always miss the chance to let it show to others, especially at school, where her life gets all complicated when a group called the Guardians notice that she poses a very special power in her heart. The guardians, are the force of light in charge of protecting the dreams of the children. This dreams physically manifest in the form of an egg called “chara”, that is said came from guardian angels, and helps the owner to make reality their dreams. But if corrupted with resentment and resignation, gives the owner sadness, darkening their future ambitions. [Information episodes=" 13 " aired=" Jun 2012 "]

Based on a visual novel, our next title, Hiiro no Kakera, retakes the formula of predecessors like Prétear, for a strong connection between two main characters, and the use of the powers of seven different nature elements, that each guardian brings to the fight to assist the protagonist in her battle against evil. This anime tells the story of Tamaki, a young girl that lives out her school days peacefully, until one day she learns that she inherited the duty as the Tamayori princess; a divine power that holds off the destruction of the world by keeping a seal on the magical sword Onikirimaru. In her new role, Tamaki is the target of strange monsters out of myths and legends; leading her to meet Takuma, a young man part demon who is now one of her protectors. As the plot evolves, Tamaki meets four boys, who as her guardians, have received the powers and abilities destined to assist her in the awakening of the power of the Tamayori princess. This anime, while is slow paced, has its merits, and just like in Shin Shirayuki-hime Densetsu Prétear, shows us the struggle of self-discovery, a good romance were girl saves boy and love conquers all. And for those who have the patience to watch it through the end, this show has good battle scenes.

[Information episodes=" 24 " aired=" Dec 2014 "]

Last but not the least, for the final recommendation is Akatsuki no Yona, a great series based on the popular ongoing manga of the same name. Our young heroine Yona, is the only princess of the kingdom of kouka, as she leads a very sheltered life, her eyes were open wide when one day, out of the blue, Yona witness Soo-won (her fiancée) murder the king and steal the throne; and just when she is about to get murdered, her father´s aide and bodyguard, Hak, came to the rescue and help her escape. Initiating their quest for justice, and overcoming the betrayal of her former love, Yona came to discover her hidden powers as the true successor, sensing naturally a way to locate the long lost whereabouts of the former founders of the land, the four dragons. Out of her bubble, the princess came to truly understand the land she called home; and while they search for allies, Yona deepen her feelings for Hak. Just as in Shin Shirayuki-hime Densetsu Prétear, this story also have a princess aided by seven supporters to fulfill a legend, just that in this case the goal is to help the protagonist to recover her rightful place as the heir of the kingdom. Also, like in Shin Shirayuki-hime Densetsu Prétear, Akatsuki no Yona is fully charged with fan service, beginning with a powerful chemistry between the 2 main characters (Yona and Hak), adding a big plus with the bodyguard romance; and while they go on adventures in the search for dragons, this series ends up giving the fans a wide selection of cool boys with diverse personalities to root for. [imgOverlay img='Tsubasa Chronicle Wallpaper 5' text="Sakura and Syaoran Deserve to Be Together" text_position="aligncenter"] [sourceLink asin="" asin_jp="B0009IH15U" text="" url="" ]

Warning: this article is full of spoilers. Read at your own risk! If there is something the mangaka quartet CLAMP loves, is to crossover their characters throughout their stories. And why not? If a character is well defined and memorable, anime fans are always eager to see more of his/her adventures. Thus, we met Sakura and Syaoran first in Card Captor Sakura, but a new “version” of the couple was introduced in Tsubasa Chronicles, originally released as manga in 2003. The anime would come in 2005, followed by several OVAs and a movie. The atmosphere in Tsubasa Chronicles and xxxHOLiC is totally different from the innocent and sweet Card Captor Sakura. We are going to occasionally mention xxxHOLiC here too because both stories are tightly related to each other. Afterall, Yuuko Ichihara from xxxHOLiC grants wishes for the archaeologist Syaoran, the magician Fai and the warrior Kurogane in exchange of high prices. The group’s ultimate goal is to defeat Fei Wong Reed, who has been creating a lot of mess throughout the worlds our heroes travel across. Let’s not forget that the story’s trigger was his attack on Sakura. But in a confusing plot twist that still gives headaches to fans, it’s revealed that there are two Syaorans and two Sakuras. We will call the cloned couple “Sakura” and “Syaoran” in this article. As for the original couple, we will call them “Tsubasa” and “Princess Tsubasa”. Anyway, going back to the story, we unfortunately never saw if the travelers defeated Fei Wong Reed in the animated version. Sakura died in the middle of a sword duel between Syaoran and Tsubasa in the Shunraiki OVA, in one of the most poetics and tragic deaths of the anime world. And although she states that, as long as the Tsubasas are alive, that’s not the end… we didn’t find out if Sakura and Syaoran got their happy ending. Because that is exactly what they deserve after traveling through so many countries (worlds) and facing so much difficulties! But let’s go little by little, shall we? So, why Sakura and Syaoran deserve to be together? You might wonder. Well, look no further, here are 5 reasons why.

[ad_top2 class="mt40"]

1. Because Syaoran Does Everything for Sakura’s Sake

Tsubasa Chronicle captcha 1
[sourceLink asin="" asin_jp="" text="Tsubasa Chronicle Ep 1" url="" ]

As we mentioned above, the story’s action starts when Fei Wong Reed attacks Sakura and Syaoran interferes. This event provoked the scattering of Sakura’s memories (in the shape of feathers) throughout many worlds. So, in order to travel through dimensions and recover them, Syaoran agrees to give up his relationship with Sakura. As they were childhood friends and, obviously, there was love chemistry between them, we can imagine that was a great sacrifice for him. But it doesn’t stop there. Recovering the memories of a now dormant Sakura meant a lot of perilous missions and epic bloody battles, because those little delicate looking feathers have strong magical powers. They can even keep people alive, so logically everyone wants them. Thus, living your life permanently on the line and being continuously injured for a girl who does not remember who you are screams how important is such girl to you in all the languages of the universe.

2. Because Sakura Reciprocates Syaoran's Sacrifices

Tsubasa Chronicle captcha 2
[sourceLink asin="" asin_jp="" text="Tsubasa Tokyo Revelations OVA 2" url="" ]

Sakura also pays an indirect price for being able to travel in order to recover her feathers (her memories with Syaoran). Although she remains as a typical “princess in disgrace” for most of the story, she slowly evolves into an active character. Sakura also creates a new relationship with Syaoran, where they take care of each other as best as they can. When Syaoran’s seal is broken in the OVA Tsubasa: Tokyo Revelations and he becomes a heartless tool for Fei Wong Read to do his dirty work, Sakura singlehandedly recovered one of her feathers. From that point onwards, she is shown with a more serious and dark personality, firmly determined to bring back Syaoran’s heart at any cost… which is exactly what she does by deciding to die in his hands on that sword duel.

3. Because They Keep Faithful to Each Other

Tsubasa Chronicle captcha 3
[sourceLink asin="" asin_jp="" text="OVA Official Image" url="" ]

We know that Syaoran can’t have a relationship with Sakura, but nevertheless, we never see any of the two romantically interested in any other character throughout the adventures of Tsubasa Chronicles. Fai and Kurogane are more like surrogate parental figures and they are more interested on each other anyway. So, with all this business of having two Syaorans and two Sakuras, it would have been simply too easy to cheat, even if by accident, right? Especially because after Syaoran left the group and his place was taken by Tsubasa, everyone thought Sakura was princess Tsubasa, his childhood companion. But no, cheating never happened! This couple deserves an award for their loyalty.

4. Because It Is Unavoidable and They Want It

Tsubasa Chronicle captcha 4
[sourceLink asin="" asin_jp="" text="Tsubasa Chronicle Ep 9" url="" ]

One of the repetitive themes on Tsubasa Chronicle and xxxHOLiC is “hitsuzen”, which can be loosely translated as “destiny”, “faith”, or “the unavoidable”. It’s clear that hitsuzen operated when Sakura fell in love again with Syaoran on their journey throughout the worlds. But well, how could she not? A brave, handsome, kind and clever guy who risks everything for your sake is someone you simply can’t unsee XD We can imagine that is why Sakura’s body moved in Shura country to kiss him on the cheek. Anyway, at the same time, there is another force operating in CLAMP’s world, which is mentioned later in xxxHOLiC. This force is “hitsuyou” which can be translated as “need”, “wish”, or “want”. By actively building their relationship from zero at various times and, paying the high prices for each others salvations, Sakura and Syaoran are also showing “hitsuyou”. Which takes us to our final reason...

5. Because They Never Give Up

Tsubasa Chronicle Wallpaper 5
[sourceLink asin="" asin_jp="B000FJGUL4" text="" url="" ]

Sakura and Syaoran were naive teenagers in the beginning of Tsubasa Chronicles, but all the pain and suffering they went throughout their apparently endless journey made them grow up. Still, there were several moments when they could take a break and enjoy being together, just side by side, unlike so many couples nowadays that jump into each others pants without even dating. The times when they were a waiter and a waitress in a Coffee Shop in Oto country, or when they worked in a circus in Shara country (when Syaoran had to dress up as a girl), are the moments that create great couple memories. Also, when they entered the race in Piffle world and learned how to fly, this pair showed us that despite all the gloomy perspectives, we can always focus on hope and the future. Sakura, who at first was a terrible racer, ended up winning the competition aided by Syaoran’s moral support.

Final Thoughts

Sakura and Syaoran are teenagers, who have lost too much at their young age but keep fighting for what they believe and want. They might have matured throughout their ordeals, but they remain kind and good individuals in the bottom, faithful to each other. So, we just can demand from CLAMP a happy ending for them. They truly deserve it! Which other reasons can you think about for Sakura and Syaoran to deserve to be together? Share with us all your comments and suggestions!

When Mikan Sakura finds out her best friend Hotaru is transferring to an elite school, she chooses to enroll with her. She finds out that this school teaches gifted students with special abilities called “Alices.” These abilities vary depending on the person and Mikan learns she possesses a rare Alice that cancels out a person’s Alice when they come near her. On her first day of school, she runs into local delinquent Natsume Hyuuga, who uses his Alice to take off her skirt after escaping from class. The two start off on a rocky relationship, but eventually become formidable partners in the school. Mikan shares some similar qualities with Sana. They’re both bright and cheery and have had rude first impressions with boys. Their wacky antics matched with their equally outgoing personalities set the tone for the anime’s wild slapstick comedy. Natsume has no respect for authority and, like Akito, has dedicated followers who admire his rebellious acts. Gakuen Alice incorporates more fantastical elements to its story. Nonetheless, it's the subtle drama involving many of Mikan’s friends that drives this series to success. The anime focuses on character development and the relationship between Mikan and Natsume. They both despise one another at first, but slowly grow to understand each other and eventually become a couple.

Kosaku adores the famous idol Yuka Kusakabe. He calls himself her biggest fan, sending her letters and collecting all her CDs, posters, and idol related memorabilia. When Yuka suddenly announces her retirement, Kosaku is devastated to the point of turning into hikikomori. He eventually returns to class, but is shocked to hear that Yuka has transferred into his school, under the name “Ringo.” Kosaku tries to learn why she enrolled in his school and deepens his relationship with her. Nourin takes place at an agricultural school - a setting totally different than the ones featured in this list. Despite this change, Nourin still keeps the wild spirit of Kodocha. It has a cast of uniquely rambunctious individuals that often get roped into weird situations. The humour also features many slapstick gags, sprinkled with a bit of parody. Ringo’s background as a Japanese idol is similar to Sana’s background as a child actress. However, while publicly she has a cheerful persona, this turns out to be a facade as she’s shown to have a dandere personality (with a hint of kuudere mixed in). Kosaku unknowingly changes Ringo to help her express her feelings for him. Overall, Nourin has flashes of drama, but is more focused on exploring the comedic everyday school life.

Kumiko “Yankumi” Yamaguchi is the granddaughter of a yakuza boss. Her parents died when she was young and her grandfather has been grooming her to be the heir of his empire. Kumiko, however, wants to become a teacher and, with her grandfather’s approval, lands a job at Shirokin Gakuen Private School. The catch is that she has to keep her Yakuza background private. Kumiko is put in charge of an all male class of delinquents that try to push her buttons. Nonetheless, she perseveres and eventually changes them to gain their respect. When your anime title is a parody on The Godfather, you know it means business. Kumiko’s tough attitude defines her role as an ideal teacher who takes no disrespect from students. Despite her hardlined personality, she’s got her own unique quirks that often lead to various comedic situations. Additionally, her relationship with the relaxed and level headed Shin Sawada begins mildly, but slowly develops into feelings of love like Sana and Akito. Having been a well known delinquent in the school, Shin is the most perceptive of Kumiko’s nature and utilizes his intellect to help her out later on. Kumiko tries to balance her reputable yakuza background and her public image as a teacher. Sana has the same dilemma when she attends a regular school while maintaining her career as a prolific child actress. Throughout their hectic lives, they still take the time to help those that are hurting and serve as inspirational characters in their own right. Gokusen is an overall goofy school comedy that takes its time to build characters and romances.

Their fates would intertwine when Kotoko’s house is destroyed by a solitary earthquake and she and her Dad are forced to live with a friend of his. Little did she know that her Dad’s friend has a son, who turns out to be Naoki! Kotoko resembles a more grown up Sana and is more airheaded than the latter. On the other hand, they’re both hopeless romantics in the pursuit of love. Naoki’s a top honour student who regularly attends class and keeps his grades up. As a result, he has a following of admirers and often makes fun of Kotoko’s intelligence. However, deep down he knows he secretly loves her. Like Kodocha, time is spent developing the relationship between the main characters. ItaKiss does this more quickly than Kodocha, as it shows Kotoko and Naoki’s rocky first encounter and the various circumstances that lead them to marriage

Miki Koishikawa’s life is turned upside down when her parents get a divorce and swap partners with a couple they met in Hawaii. While getting used to this ordeal, Miki meets the couple’s son, Yuu, who first appears as a jerk that constantly teases her. They eventually come to terms with their own differences and their new family, but their relationship gets complicated with run ins from old acquaintances. Marmalade Boy explores the dramatic tensions of families. The Kodocha formula here is pretty much the same: Miki meets a distant boy, they have some crazy interactions with one another, and they eventually fall in love. Marmalade Boy, however, takes more risks in its story. The partner swap involving the two main characters’ families is a touchy subject even for an anime. Although the story is more mature, Marmalade Boy still has Kodocha’s charm. Miki is your regular outgoing optimist who is often the victim of Yuu’s teases. Yuu is more outgoing than Akito, but he hides a resentful nature that stems from his relationship with his father. Marmalade Boy has its happy moments, but mixed in is a complex drama that involves a cast of friends and exes.

Satoshi Yabe’s new life as a teacher just got harder with the Marui triplets. Mitsuba is the eldest sister who’s a self proclaimed sadist and enjoys causing mischief. Futaba is the goofy oddball who’s very strong and athletic. Hitoha - the youngest sibling - is a quiet bookworm who secretly enjoys reading porn. Mitsudomoe follows the everyday life of these three girls, their class, and their unfortunate teacher. Mitsudomoe is the most perverted anime on this list. What it does have in common with Kodocha is its positive slice-of-life nature and downright outrageous characters. The anime relies on gags and comedic situations to move its story along. Although the Marui triplets cause a lot of chaos in their classroom, they genuinely care for each other and their close friends (most of the time). Mitsudomoe has its perverted humour, but also has sentimental moments worth grabbing some tissues for.

Warning: if you are anxiously waiting for the release of Sailor Moon Crystal S3 and do not wish to read SPOILERS, please pick another article to read. Is there someone who doesn’t know Sailor Moon? The creation of a Japanese pharmacy student who also aspired to become a mangaka took the world by storm with its premise of a cast of warrior girls in Sailor suits. Yet, one of the strong points of this anime is that such cast is varied, showing not only defined personalities but also goals beyond being a bride or housewife. This was a novelty when Sailor Moon was released for the first time, back in the 90s. But let’s analyze a particular couple of characters that defined a considerable portion of the rhythm and environment in the third season of the first version of the anime. We are talking about Haruka and Michiru, a.k.a. Sailor Uranus and Sailor Neptune. On its third season (known as Sailor Moon S or Sailor Moon Super), the story parts away from the origins of our heroines powers and the future of the Earth. This time, the menace is more focused in the present, aided by a mad scientist. Things get darker and more serious with the appearance in present days of the Senshi from the Outer Solar System. We were kinda expecting more adult tones, as we met Sailor Pluto in the second season and she was shown to be older, with a more mature character. Still, Uranus and Neptune had the particularity of being a couple. And a killer couple they are! Beyond the fact that they are girls, their relationship dynamics in an anime targeted to the whole family was interesting to watch. This fact was so controversial in some countries (like the U.S.), that dialogues were changed to give the impression that Haruka and Michiru were cousins. But maybe the world is ready for the truth now that Sailor Moon is coming back with the third season of Crystal. So, without further ado, let’s give rendition to the relationship of these two iconic characters of Sailor Moon S, and let’s see why Sailor Uranus and Sailor Neptune are our favorite couple.

[ad_top2 class="mt40"]

1. Their Talents

Sailor Moon Captcha 1
[sourceLink asin="" asin_jp="" text="Sailor Moon S episode 92" url="" ]

Yes, Haruka and Michiru are middle school students like most of the other Senshi, but they do not attend just any school. Mugen Academy is a massive elite complex founded by the Sailor Moon S antagonist (the scientist Souichi Tomoe), where only genius students are admitted. In the particular case of Haruka and Michiru, they appear to be from wealthy backgrounds. Haruka is a car and motocross racer, active and cool. She is also shown to play the piano in the last Sailor Moon season from the 90s (Sailor Stars). As for Michiru, she is a talented violinist and painter. Her instrument is even used to attack enemies, and becomes some sort of musical trademark for the duo’s appearances as Sailor Senshi. Now, that’s classy!

2. The Combination of Their Personalities

Sailor Moon wallpaper 2
[sourceLink asin="B00069BM4I" asin_jp="" text="" url="" ]

Faithful reflections of their talents, this pair is an interesting and well balanced combo. Haruka is a tomboy who is pretty much like the wind: easy-going, free and somewhat mischievous. As Sailor Uranus, she also has a protective personality, although sometimes we see her reacting rather strongly. As for Michiru, she is the ideal complement for Haruka, as she is feminine and kind. Her violin has been described as “the sound of the sea” by Naoko Takeuchi (Sailor Moon’s original creator). When Michiru is angry, she is composed, cold and sharp. She might look frail at first sight, but as Sailor Neptune, she is as effective in battle as Sailor Uranus. One of the best early examples of how well both girls personalities are combined is shown in episode 93, when Haruka mischievously throws a lemon towards Michiru’s violin and she keeps playing, balancing the fruit.

3. They are Independent and Daring

Sailor Moon Captcha 3
[sourceLink asin="" asin_jp="" text="Sailor Moon S episode 110" url="" ]

By now it’s quite clear that this pair is independent. We know that most of the Inner Senshi live with their parents or, in the case of Rei Hino, with her grandfather. But there’s little official information about Haruka and Michiru’s parents. They have lived on their own since we met them, and Haruka even mentioned they had “wealthy patrons” once. Of course that, being famous and having such careers, it’s expected. They even have helicopters to ride to school (as shown in episode 92), which they know how to pilot. We can only expect that, as Sailor Moon Crystal is more similar to the manga in general, we will see more of those helicopters and other daring scenes both in their daily lives and as Sailor Senshi.

4. They Know How to Flirt but Keep Loyal to Each Other

Sailor Moon Captcha 4
[sourceLink asin="" asin_jp="" text="Sailor Moon S episode 21" url="" ]

Throughout Sailor Moon S, this pair is shown to have a peculiar sense of humor. When they were around the Inner Sailor Senshi they made fun of themselves, especially Haruka. In episode 92, the other girls took her for a man, as she usually dresses like one and addresses herself as “boku” (a male form of “I”). Haruka did not make an effort to correct that impression until much later, which led to comical situations. Haruka also flirts with Usagi, who eventually flirts back, once she understands it’s not a serious business. But when Haruka and Michiru are shown interacting with each other, it is obvious their relationship is strong and positive. In episode 94, they talk about kisses with Usagi and the conversation could have lead to jealousy. Instead of that, Michiru states that people want to make the most of their first kiss and glances at Haruka, who stares back and chuckles. So, flirting is just a game and they know it. Again, in the case of Crystal, these two girls might be more flirty when they interact with Usagi and her boyfriend Mamoru. That would spice things up a little!

5. Their Maturity

Sailor Moon Captcha 5
[sourceLink asin="" asin_jp="" text="Sailor Moon R Movie" url="" ]

With such stylish personalities and their independent natures we can only expect that Sailor Uranus and Sailor Neptune are more into the adult world than the Inner Senshi. The contrast is especially prominent in the first version of the anime, where our five girls are childish practically most of the time. Introducing the Outer Senshi to the story helped to give the female cast more balance. Also, this pair tend to keep themselves in their private little world. It might look at first sight as a protective shield, away from the fame of their civilian lives. But once we discovered they also were Sailor Senshi, we found out that what they ultimately wanted is to protect their Princess (Sailor Moon) without hurting her or the others. In episode 98, Haruka even states that they made the promise of fulfilling their mission as Sailor Senshi even if one of them dies. These girls take matters on their own hands!

Final Thoughts

Naoko Takeuchi gave us some of the most unforgettable characters in the shoujo anime world, as her girls are more than pretty faces in Sailor uniforms. By giving defined personalities, depth and complex relationships to Sailor Uranus and Sailor Neptune, she created the most wonderful couple ever! Always imitated, never equaled. Which are your favorite Haruka and Michiru moments? Which are your expectations for our couple in Sailor Moon Crystal S3? We welcome all our comments!

[sourceLink asin="" asin_jp="B00ZA2ES4C" text="" url="" ]

Where does one begin with one of the funniest anime in recent memory? No, I’m not talking about One-Punch Man (even though it’s well-deserved); I’m talking about Gintama. With story arcs that sound borderline insane, random situations and encounters that leave so many people amused yet scratching their head at the same time, and a wide variety of jokes spread throughout the series, Gintama has certainly earned its reputation as a series where anything can and will happen and will leave you breathless with laughter. Despite all the randomness that happens to make this series funny, there is one consistency throughout Gintama that is the biggest contribution to its humor: the characters themselves. Whether they instigate certain situations, find everything amusing, have weird quirks, constantly get themselves into trouble, or are actually normal and are try to comprehend what happened just as much as we are, each character brings their own style of humor to the series. However, because of how subjective humor can be, some Gintama characters are considered by a lot of people to be funny as opposed to just some. Bearing in mind the number of characters in Gintama, the type of humor represented, and their overall popularity, here are the top 10 funniest Gintama characters.

[ad_top2 class="mt40 mb40"]

10. Toshiro Hijikata

toshiro hijikata gintama

The vice-chief of the Shinsengumi and also known as the “Demon Vice-Chief”, Hijikata has earned a reputation for having a ruthless and serious attitude both on the battlefield and in his everyday life. Hijikata may be rivals with Gintoki, but he also regards as Gintoki as a close friend, as he too loyally protects those that are close to him. Hijikata’s humor comes across best in the form of multiple running gags, such as his sword being possessed by an otaku and his obsession with mayonnaise. Despite trying and failing to be cool with whatever it is that he’s going through, Hijikata is the closest thing to a recurring rival in the series for Gintoki, marking his skills as a fighter. If you like the kind of humor involving a character going to the extremes on each end of the personality scale, then Hijikata would be a good character to start with.

9. Kagura

gintama kagura

Despite the appearance of being an innocent girl without a care in the world, Kagura is actually a member of the Yato Clan, one of the strongest alien races in the series. Because of this immense strength that she possesses, Kagura is easily the strongest amongst the trio of herself, Gintoki, and Shinpachi. Kagura’s humor mainly relies on performing the unexpected. Even though she is only 14 and appears to be delicate, Kagura is anything but. She often has the mouth of a sailor, shows unexpected displays of her strength (such as accidentally killing most of her pets when she hugs them in her sleep), and usually devours an incredible amount of food no normal person of her size can eat. Kagura looks up to Gin as a father figure, and shares Gin’s view of fiercely protecting those close to her. If you’re a fan of unexpected humor, Kagura would be a character to keep an eye on.

8. Kotaro Katsura

gintama kotarou katsura

A former comrade of Gintoki’s during the Joi War, Katsura is introduced to the series as a fugitive who is wanted by the authorities because of his desire to destroy the entire country. Due to the new people he has met in Edo, however, Katsura has since changed his mind, instead focusing on seeking a way to bringing about a change without causing pointless bloodshed. Katsura’s humor is similar to Gintoki’s in the sense that he tends to make decisions no one really understands. Some examples that happen repeatedly would be Katsura’s completely ineffectual disguises to avoid being captured by the Shinsengumi or his refusal to kill the Shogun whenever he’s naked. Katsura also tends to have dramatic flashbacks about subjects that are pointless, voice inanimate objects due to his imagination, and has a thing for unfaithful housewives. If you’re a fan of Gintoki’s type of humor, odds are Katsura will be right up your alley.

7. Elizabeth

Elizabeth Gintama

The right hand “partner” of Katsura, Elizabeth is either a giant duck, a giant penguin, or the director in some kind of weird bird costume…whichever makes the most sense to you. Elizabeth is fiercely loyal to Katsura to the point where it has saved Katsura’s life multiple times. Elizabeth almost never talks at all throughout the series, preferring to communicate via signboards, which also serve as its weapons. A lot of Elizabeth’s humor comes with its interactions via the signboards, the use of its bazooka at random times, the outfits it wears, or the rivalry antics Elizabeth engages in with Saito Shimaru, whose gimmick also involves using signboards to talk. It’s even revealed later that there is more than 1 Elizabeth that accompanies Katsura! If you enjoy random bouts of humor involving the character that even most other characters aren’t sure what to make of, Elizabeth is the duck…penguin…thing for you.

6. Tsukuyo

tsukuyo gintama

The leader of Yoshiwara’s women-only law enforcement squad known as the Hundred Blooms, Tsukuyo is a no-nonsense type of woman. Scarring her face to display her refusal of accepting the classic female norms, the “Courtesan of Death” stands as one of the most accomplished female fighters in the series. Tsukuyo’s humor is similar to Shinpachi’s in terms of being the straight character in the current situation, but unlike Shinpachi, Tsukuyo has more of a cold and reserved seriousness who fails to see any humor at all. That is, until she meets up with Gintoki and his friends, where she starts to open up more. Tsukuyo’s most humorous scenes revolve around drinking any amount of alcohol, resulting in her going on a completely drunken rampage. She may also have feelings for Gintoki, although she (like the rest of Gintoki’s female friends) tends to beat the crap out of him whenever he purposefully (or accidentally) gropes her. If you’re a fan of the overly serious character that eventually acts as stupid as everyone else from time to time, Tsukuyo’s the character for you.

[ad_middle]

5. Shimura Shinpachi

age16 shinpachi shimura00

A 16 year old samurai who Gintoki helps in order to save his older sister at the beginning of the series, Shinpachi joins up with Gintoki in the hope that he can study the way of the samurai under him. Shinpachi’s humor comes from the fact that he acts as “the straight man” throughout the shenanigans Gintoki and his friends get into, establishing himself as a connection to the audience watching the insanity going on around him. Because of how often this happens, the rest of the characters begin to joke about how Shinpachi’s only character trait is his glasses, resulting in many characters talking to any pair of glasses as if they’re Shinpachi himself. If it weren’t any worse for Shinpachi, his voice becomes high pitched as he overreacts to the situation at hand. Shinpachi does become more skilled and even somewhat of a badass as the series progresses, providing humor unexpectedly when he is able to show some serious skill. That being said, Shinpachi’s straight man role, while sometimes taken advantage of by his friends, provides some funny relatable moments for the audience.

4. Shigeshige Tokugawa

Shigeshige Tokugawa Gintama

Referred to as the Great General, Shigeshige is the ruling Shogun of Edo, and is legitimately competent despite being so young. He never loses his cool and has the best intentions for his people. He also tends to end up naked every time he’s introduced. Shigeshige’s humor usually involves the running gag of either accidentally losing his clothes or stripping them off himself, yet somehow always maintaining a stoic presence. There’s just no holding back the laughter when you see Shigeshige with a serious expression on his face despite his tighty-whities being stretched to extreme lengths, such as when he’s drinking a soda or standing on an inflatable raft. Despite these constant setbacks, Shigeshige continues to do his best to experience a normal citizen’s life and make friends, and with Gintoki being one of the few people to recognize him, this tends to lead to some unique circumstances. If you enjoy running gags, Shigeshige’s running gag never fails to disappoint.

3. Isao Kondo

isao kondo gintama

The commander of the Shinsengumi, an anti-terrorist unit, Kondo serves as a good and honorable leader who has earned his subordinates’ respect. He is also goofy, tends to voluntarily end up naked, has earned the nickname “Gorilla” due to his appearance (especially his arse), and is constantly stalking Shinpachi’s sister Tae, resulting in her beating him senseless every time he’s caught. Kondo’s humor definitely has a perverted sense to it as well as the unexpectedness of someone in his positon engaging in certain antics. However, even though he constantly comes across as incompetent, Kondo does take his job seriously, earning the respect of his men to the point of rebellion when he was imprisoned and showing his fighting skills numerous times, such as knocking out his opponents in one hit. If you like visual gags, Kondo is definitely a go to character.

2. Taizou "Madao" Hasegawa

madao 02

Once a high-working official in the government, Hasegawa was living a normal life until an unfortunate incident with Prince Hata forced him to flee, costing him his job. As a result, Hasegawa is homeless, becomes a heavy drinker, and survives in a similar manner that Gin and his friends do. Hasegawa’s humor is mainly of the self-deprecating variety, stemming from having unfortunate things happen to him over and over repeatedly, such as failing multiple suicide attempts, having his epiphanies ignored by everyone, and taking living with the cardboard to the extreme. Even when something good does happen to him, Hasegawa’s bad luck and the friendships he keeps prevent him from further improving his circumstances, such as giving away 10,000,000 yen he won to a family that needs it. If you’re a fan of dark humor, Madao is the character for you.

1. Sakata Gintoki

Gintoki Sakata

A lazy samurai trying to survive during a time when samurai aren’t needed anymore, Gintoki is forced to take up odd jobs in order to pay his rent. Combined with his need to go to great lengths to protect his friends as well as complete strangers, Gintoki finds himself in some pretty strange situations to say the least. Gintoki’s style of humor is very much in line with that of most of the other characters in the sense that he overreacts to many different kinds of situations, such has drinking booze as fast as possible to forget sleeping with Hasegawa Taizou while wasted. Gintoki also intentionally and unintentionally makes sexual innuendos (especially when interacting physically with his female friends) and breaks the 4th wall repeatedly, such as getting worried that certain actions he did wile drinking will get the show canceled. Even though Gintoki can come across as a jerk, often loses when gambling, drinks too much, and is obsessed with reading the Weekly Shounen Jump (as well as strawberry milk), there’s more to Gintoki than meets the eye. Despite the humorous take on the flashbacks we see of how Gintoki became the man he is today, Gintoki has definitely gone through a lot of hardship in his life, and refuses to allow failure as an option whenever he has to protect his friends or strangers from somebody. The final result: a character who definitely has some development to him in addition to connecting all of the other comedic characters together.

[sourceLink asin="B00019JQPK" asin_jp="" text="" url="" ]

Ahh Marmalade boy, if you were old enough to remember this drama-filled romance back in the mid-nineties then this has probably affected you in some way. This anime has no shortage of drama, romance and comedy. The whole concept of having parents swapping spouses with another family has drama written all over it. Not to mention Miki and Yuu’s other prospects in regards to dating, which get introduced throughout the show. Although it’s targeted as a Shoujo anime, Marmalade Boy certainly has enough to offer up for the male demographic as well. Here’s a list of 6 anime that has striking similarities.

[ad_top2 class="mt40"]

Similar Anime to Marmalade Boy

1. Itazura na Kiss

A clumsy and bothersome third-year high school student named Kotoko Aihara develops a crush on a fellow high school student Naoki Irie. The problem with this scenario is that Naoki isn’t interested in “stupid girls” which initially he feels she is. Just like in Marmalade Boy, the male main characters are originally cold to their female counterpart. With that being said, Naoki proceeds to shun Kotoko away, much to her dismay. Shortly thereafter, an earthquake hits Tokyo and it levels Kotoko’s house leaving her in a rather unfortunate situation. Due to a bittersweet twist of fate, Kotoko finds herself living in the same house as her love interest, Naoki. She believes with this opportunity given to her that she will be able to win him over and show what she has to offer. Itazura na Kiss is a very sweet romantic anime that tugs on your heartstring. It offers up some of the same situations that Marmalade Boy offers. Such as, the love interest living in the same house and the main character’s ability to cope and change throughout the course of the anime.

This anime also features a heavy love triangle scenario complete with all the drama you would come to expect from that given situation. The main female protagonist Tsukushi, is comparable to Miki, in that, they’re both outspoken individuals and have a similar physical look to them. This anime goes through the trials and mistakes that youths make while in love. Tsukushi Makino comes from a poor family thus she learns to be very frugal with her choices. She doesn’t tolerate bullies and she will let them know when they are out of line. All she wants to do is get through her final two years of high school, but things won’t be that easy for her. One day her friend gets into a sticky situation accidently and ends up getting picked on by the leader of the Flower Four clique, Tsukasa Domyoji. The F4 group consists of rich friends who have known each other since childhood. They also have no problem in bullying the less fortunate. After that incident when Tsukushi stuck up for her friend she received a red card in her locker. It was the F4 letting her know that she is to become a target and it wasn’t appreciated what she did. From then on, Tsukushi was determined to make sure her morals would not be overthrown by this clique. The one thing she did not anticipate was developing feelings for one of the F4 members in the process. Although grittier in the animation department, this show is very comparable.

[Information episodes=" 25 " aired=" Apr. 2005 – Jun. 2005 "]

Peach Girl, as the title suggests, is about an average high school girl who is labeled as “beach bunny” because she has such tanned skin, hence the “peach”. With that riding on her back she hears that the boy she likes, Toji, doesn’t like tanned females. There’s a dilemma right there for the young Momo Adachi as she struggles to remake herself into something that she believes he likes. What’s interesting to note, while in the process of trying to win over Toji, she starts to take a liking into another boy named Kairi. The story continues as Momo becomes confused as to which boy she would like to date. Throw in a childhood friend who also likes Toji and you have a recipe for drama. This anime was well done at portraying what teenagers can go through just for the sake of love. This resonates with Marmalade Boy because it shares that romantic love triangle of being indecisive and excited at the possibility of snagging that elusive boy.

[Information episodes=" 26 " aired=" Jul. 2006 – Dec. 2006 "]

Bokura ga Ita, is a love story about an innocent baby faced teenager by the name of Nanami Takahashi. She aspires to make many new friends on her first day of high school. She meets this handsome boy by the name of Yano Motoharu, who is beloved by nearly every female in that school. Right away Nanami knows she is in for a challenge to win his affection. The similarities to Marmalade Boy start to creep up as the anime moves along, however there are certain instances that jump out at you right away. For example, the main female characters from Marmalade Boy and Bokura ga Ita are both innocent and are absent-minded at times, leaving them in unenviable situations. Yano can also be hurtful to Nanami when he pushes her away. Lastly, they both take place in a school environment with other characters interfering with what seems to be destiny for the main two. Just like Marmalade Boy, there is also a haunting secret from the male protagonist that later is revealed and plays a big part in the development of their respected relationships. There are laughs and uncomfortable situations in this anime. I feel it does bring a serious tone when called upon and it has sexual references throughout, as to be expected in some romance series.

Futaba Yoshioka was at her peak in popularity in middle-school. She was well received from boys but it didn’t carry over too well to the girls and she was often snubbed because of it. It didn’t matter to her however, as the only opinion that did matter was of a classmate named Kou Tanaka. They had shared some precious memories together and then all of a sudden, a misunderstanding and a disappearance from Kou turned everything upside down for Futaba. Now in high school, Futaba is determined to not have history repeat itself as she takes a different approach to make new friends. It all seems to be going smoothly, until one day the former love of hers reappears complete with a new last name and other changes. Although it has a different start to the anime, it later has the same traits that Marmalade Boy expressed throughout. One of those character traits is Futaba being passionate and caring. Like all of these anime on this list up to this point, they take part in a school setting and involve teenage exploration of love and rejection. The characters will deal with confusion, indecision and heartbreak along the way. There will be unwanted scenarios from other boys and girls that figure into this plot. The story felt real and true to itself.

Tohru Honda, is a 16-year-old girl who found herself living in a tent by herself after the untimely passing of both her parents. Yuki, a handsome boy, and his cousin Shigure, found poor Tohru living on their property and invited her to live with them after a recent landslide destroyed her tent. This instantly reminded us of the living situation in Marmalade Boy, with the lead female living with a potential love interest. Little did sweet Tohru know that these males she is living with have a family curse that the inhabitants have inherited. Now with her interest in Yuki, she has to be careful with her advancements otherwise she might end up having Yuki transform into a beast from a Chinese Zodiac. All it takes is one hug for the bizarre situations to be created, and bizarre they are. The lead female has similar characteristics to Miki that include being sweet, cheerful and loving. Yes, there is teenage love and drama, but it doesn’t rely on the school setting and it mixes in some fantasy elements, which is a pleasant change. It’s probably the most unique on this list but it still supports some of the likeness from Marmalade Boy. It’s quirky, It’s different, use whatever adjective to describe it, it’s worth a shot.

Final Thoughts

From this list, there should be enough drama to shake a stick at. The list doesn’t hold back from these similar themes of love and adaptability from the issues that arise throughout. If you’re a big fan of romance with some rather interesting concepts that are drama-filled to the core, you’re in luck. Throw in some comic relief in there to alleviate the excessive drama that occasionally got to be a little much. However you decide to look at this list of anime, we hope you take the time to check these out and find some to your liking. We would love to hear your thoughts on this list. As usual, we have to issue a warning: this article is full of spoilers. Read at your own risk or please pick up another article to read. Julietta Suzuki is a shoujo mangaka who published several short stories before her first series in the magazine Hana to Yume: Akuma to Dolce. Her third series is the topic of this article, the lovely Kamisama Kiss, or Kamisama Hajimemashita, as it’s known in Japan. The manga is projected to end this year’s May, so hopefully we will have more anime seasons or OVAs. We will have to conform with the last release in 2015 for the moment, but we definitely want to see more of our couple. Although Suzuki’s drawing style is what we can expect from a shoujo, with big shining eyes, abuse of pink shades, flowers and the like, the twist in Kamisama Kiss is a combination with the Japanese shrine culture and colorful adventures with a diverse (and sometimes even cute) Youkai cast. The Cinderella archetypal story is also a big appeal to fans. I mean, who is given a house for free just when they are kicked out of theirs? This house-ex-machina can only happen in the anime world. And yet, the story increases in depth with time. In short, we get a sugary anime with comedy, nice upbeat music featuring traditional Japanese instruments and highly likeable characters. In particular, we have a reliable protagonist (Nanami) who matures in order to face the challenges of becoming a land God. But who would not like to face such challenges with a handsome protective Kitsune (Tomoe) as a companion? Anyway, let’s see exactly why this pair of lovebirds are such a great couple.

[ad_top2 class="mt40"]

1. Because Tomoe is the Sexiest Kitsune

[sourceLink asin="" asin_jp="" text="Kamisama Hajimemashita Episode 1" url="" ]

Time for a short crash course on Japanese folklore! We must have noticed by now that the world of anime is full of characters with fox ears and tails. This is a direct consequence of the traditional stories where fox spirits (kitsune) are protagonists. Kitsune are intelligent and their magic increases with age, but their trademark ability is to shapeshift to human beings with the help of leaves. Although some stories refer to these spirits as mischievous and harmful, they are depicted as model wives and husbands in others. So, who combines the best of these two perspectives? None other than Tomoe, who is handsome and has a magical attractive allure. The sly, flirty guy also uses this to his advantage, but when he has to protect Nanami, he shifts to his serious and proud personality. He is the ideal stay at home husband, as he can clean and cook perfectly well! Tomoe even took care of Nanami’s cold in an episode. As youkai, he can use fire to fly and find objects, and his past as the companion of the demon king Akura Ou is fascinating and bloody, becuase in it we can find why he does not believe in love in the beginning of the story. But that changed when he met a certain special someone…

2. Because Nanami is Resourceful

2 Kamisama Hajimemashita Capture
[sourceLink asin="" asin_jp="" text="Kamisama Hajimemashita Episode 1" url="" ]

Enter the protagonist of Kamisama Kiss! She looks as the ideal cute, soft and delicate shoujo girl, but her character is the opposite. Her father was an irresponsible gambler who ran away from home, so he is the main reason why she is poor at the beginning of the story. Her mother died of an illness sometime before, admonishing her to not trust men. That is why Nanami is highly independent and self-aware. Also determined, stubborn and protective, when she receives a house that turns out to be a shrine with Tomoe included in it, she is shocked and reluctant to accept her new position at first. It’s expected, as the “food offerings” the shrine spirits give her are usually reserved for Kamis images on earth, they are not for humans. She also acquires the abilities of listening to people's prayers and of using papers to trick her enemies in a similar fashion that youkai do (changing places with someone or something). Tomoe is furious with the idea of becoming the servant of such a “weak girl”. Still, when she is attacked by another youkai in the first episode and falls down a cliff, she pulls Tomoe with her and unexpectedly kisses him, making him his servant. This girl does not let her human condition to be an obstacle for her, she does her duties as a land God and saves Tomoe whenever it’s necessary. So, don’t judge her by her appearance!

3. Because They’re Not Always Together

3 Kamisama Hajimemashita Capture
[sourceLink asin="" asin_jp="" text="Kamisama Hajimemashita Episode 11" url="" ]

For some people, being with their sweetheart 24 hours a day and sharing every single thing is the ultimate dream. For others, it sounds like a stalking nightmare. So, how to keep a balance? Well, this couple has managed it, partly because of their personalities. Tomoe has his own diversions and gives space to Nanami when she needs to practice her spiritual powers. He also retires to the Youkai realm when necessary. As for our protagonist, being the independent girl she is, does not overly sticks with him, even if they usually are together attending the shrine, fighting youkais or at school. Of course that Nanami shows jealousy sometimes, as Tomoe is too sexy for not being a female distraction. In those moments, she can be so mad she looks scary! But this situation is not one sided, as our kitsune is also jealous of Nanami’s cute shikigami Mamoru and of the cool looking youkai Kurama, who is an idol in the human world. Nevertheless, all these situations fall more into the comedic part of the relationship and does not affect the couple in a negative way.

4. Because Their Relationship Is Based on Loyalty

4 Kamisama Hajimemashita Capture
[sourceLink asin="" asin_jp="" text="OAD God Leaps into the Past" url="" ]

Tomoe used to love a human girl so much that he made a pact with a God called Kuromaru to give up his youkai powers, so that he could grow old and die with her. He does not remember this when he meets Nanami, but it turns out that, in a complicated twist of time travels, the girl he loved in the past was Nanami herself, disguised as a certain Yukiji. Although Tomoe’s memories were sealed by his former master Mikage, he falls in love with Nanami in the present for the exact same reasons he did in the past: her determined personality, courage and protective nature which shows up even in the most adverse circumstances. Yet, when he becomes Nanami’s servant in the present, he takes his job of protecting her seriously regardless of having or not feelings towards her. Tomoe confronts Gods and even goes to hell in one occasion for her sake. That is some loyalty there!

5. Because of The Power of Their Love

5 Kamisama Hajimemashita Capture
[sourceLink asin="" asin_jp="" text="Kamisama Hajimemashita Episode 4" url="" ]

When Tomoe was the companion of the demon King in the past, he used to kill other living beings without any mercy. He also thought love was foolish, but he learned to value himself through his relationship with Nanami, to treat others with forgiveness (as he did when he left the demon King, actually) and to not give in to his raw youkai instincts. As for Nanami, Tomoe’s youkai apprentice, Mizuki, tried to make her hate her servant in the first episodes. He basically told her that Tomoe was a womanizer, but eventually realized that Nanami’s feelings were too strong. She also was shocked when she realized how cruel Tomoe was when she traveled to the past, but she learns to accept his youkai nature once it’s evident he has changed and is forgiving towards him. A love that makes you become a better person is undoubtedly the best love ever!

Final Thoughts

The story of Kamisama Kiss is a love between different species that works as an allegory to love between different cultures. Nanami never lost her faith that a relationship between a youkai and a human could work, but she did more than believe. Nanami demonstrated Tomoe how much she cared for him with actions. That made Tomoe notice her, and in the end, both had to put a lot of effort on it. So, remember kids, couples who work hard together towards an objective, stay together. Which was your favorite Nanami and Tomoe moment? What would you like to see in future anime seasons of Kamisama Kiss? We’re open to all your comments and suggestions!
